Our kitchen is white, with a granite countertop (Colonial Treasure). The walls are a medium grey-green (Benjamin Moore Vineland) and while the tile floor is currently white, we will eventually replace it with oak-tone hardwood. What would you pick for a backsplash? The backsplash you see in the picture is actually only a very dark brown-black paint job, cleverly marked with tape and re-painted to mimic tiles. (Done to do \*something\* while I figured out a backsplash.) Is it too dark? I think I want one inch glass tiles in a dark grey or espresso colour, but do you think I need more colour? This is a combined kitchen and family room. The 3rd picture shows the view in the other direction, towards our fireplace and eventually the solarium and deck. The fireplace is a dark taupe. We love this room and spend all our time in it but sometimes I feel it looks a little too masculine and could use some splashes of colour. Thank you in advance! A: A glass tile would be nice especially a subway tile. Something in a 1 in x 6 in subway, don't use a 3x5, not a fan of that type of tile. **Q: Wall texture for house remodel?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Remodeling my 1961 ranch house in Sunnyvale, California. Four rooms (LR, DR, Fam and Kit) and entryway potentially need decision on wall and ceiling texture. Most is currently "knockdown", aka with a slightly rough, troweled look. The GC says he can match existing textures at no additional cost, but says smooth wall texture will look a lot better. He seems to have a very good eye for these things. I've never seen this glassy smooth wall and ceiling texture, which would cost extra. What's the look/feel? Clean, modern, glitzy? My house is conventional, not terribly modern. Putting engineered hardwood and stone-look porcelain tile on floors. Will keeping my 1961 knockdown texture be dating and dowdy-looking? Should I go smooth in the kitchen even if I stay "knockdown" in other rooms? A: Smooth is good and modern looking if that is what you are looking for. If not keep the same texture, but to actually match it is not simple and takes a professional who has been doing it for a long time. **Q: CAN NOT make a decision about my Master Bath!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I already have MDF crown in my master bath. We are converting our acrylic tub/shower combo into a master shower. I really love the look of tile being run all the way up to the crown molding but I don't want my shower to look "contemporary" in a traditional home, NOR do I want a moisture problem in later years. Can I have tile up to my crown or do I need to stop short of the crown about 10"? A: I wouldn't use crown in a bathroom do to so much moisture. You can but in time it will swell. My suggestion is to use a tile for crown. We put some tumbler marble on top of each other, we put a whole tile 4x4 then a three quarters tile then half a tile. But we put them at halfway of each other. Then you can run your tile all the way up and stop the crown of tile where it meets the tile of the shower. **Q: Need help for hearth** *(in Design Dilemma)* We recently removed an old wood burning stove and are not sure what to do with this area. We are thinking we should install gas logs but not sure about the design. We would like a mantel and perhaps some shelves on each side. Also, we would like to have some of the brick left exposed especially at the top. Several people have come over and looked at it including some designers but everyone seems to be stumped. It is like the elephant in the room and almost looks like a stage. We do not want to remove the brick on the floor because it would be hard to match up the original hardwood floors. Any help would be appreciated. A: In the picture I posted, the fireplace actually burns wood. She did not want a gas fireplace. **Q: Need help for kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)* Looking for suggestions to have a more modern/contemporary look. I.e. paint colors for walls, cabinet colors, countertops, backslashes. There is a pergo floor and just need some extra suggestions. Thanks! A: I installed this backsplash, it was really nice after it was done. Just an idea. **Q: Bath design ideas?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We're doing our very first bathroom remodel and would like some suggestions and ideas to create a more modern but neutral look. Any ideas/suggestions/pictures will be helpful for us. There are skylights in the bathroom and is very bright. We are thinking putting in a jacuzzi tub, bluish grey or light taupe for the wall paint color, dark brown/black counter, and brushed nickle simple hardware. We are not sure about what type of lighting and tiles yet...and I understand that could change the entire look and feel of the space. Suggestions and advice are much appreciated!! A: I actually like that idea of the tube being like that, leave that the same way, maybe just updated the jacuzzi. A nice slate or a travertine tile would look real nice. A suggestion though, that when you get your tile installed that for the tile installer use a schlutter system to cover up the hardi. It is a waterproof membrane, it is good just in case there are some holes that appear in the grout that you can't see. It is just a precaution. You can also use it on the floor, but for the floor it is made from a different material.
