**★★★★★ — Catherine Keim, Oct. 2017**

> I've had Kathy help me pick out all the colors in my house. She also spent quite a long time getting the right colors and design for my faux paint in my kitchen. She helped me design my living room and even designed an outdoor garden. I only wish I had thought to have her help me when we were building our house. She is very good!

**★★★★★ — Carol Nagel, Sept. 2017**

> I have worked with Kathy in two of her Bucks County Designer Showhouse rooms (2016 and 2017). I am a decorative painter, with 30+ years of experience working on residential projects under the guidance of Interior designers. I have been very impressed with Kathy's attention to detail (from the most functional aspects to the finishing touches), her depth of knowledge, her unflagging energy, and her open-mindedness. Kathy's visual aesthetic is solid and sensitive, based in a deep love of nature. She is flexible, not ego-driven, regarding design decisions, but uncompromisingly thorough when it comes to quality.

**★★★★★ — Closet City, Aug. 2017**

**★★★★★ — eak1110, June 2015**

> Kathy is easy to work with and has great ideas and suggestions that fit within our budget.
> I have worked with Kathy on 2 projects, creating a new laundry/storage room and a home office. The laundry area was was laid out perfectly and I have plenty of storage space. Kathy suggested using and old armoire to add in the room for more storage and it fit in perfectly. The furniture in the home office was a great recommendation and looks great!

**Comment from Kathy Appel, ASID:**

> Thanks so much Liz. You are a great client that I love working with.

**★★★★★ — Shelley D., April 2015**

> Kathy has assisted me with numerous design and decorating projects over the past 7 years in two homes. They have ranged from color selection and design of my entire new construction home to smaller projects including kitchen and bath remodels, custom window treatments, nursery design, room updates, and space planning. Kathy is always attentive to my preferences and budget, and I have never been anything but 100% pleased and satisfied with the outcome. One of the great things about her company Hearth and Hedgerow is the full service from design to installation, and the network of contractors with which she works are of highest quality. I highly recommend Kathy.

**Comment from Kathy Appel, ASID:**

> It's always been a pleasure working with you and designing for your family.

**★★★★★ — suemc1st, Sept. 2014**

> Kathy has been helping me with a full kitchen/living room remodel. Everything in the space was removed including a dividing wall. Kathy provided me with a new floor plan. She went with me to select flooring, countertops, lighting, etc. Because of her knowledge of lighting, color and products available, I have been able to make choices easily. She has been very available and she's just great to work with!

**Comment from Kathy Appel, ASID:**

> Sue, it was really a drastic change. The new kitchen looks great and I can't wait to get it photographed!

- [Music Room - Perkasie - Bucks County, PA](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/music-room-perkasie-bucks-county-pa-pj-vj~330279)
  - Location: Perkasie, PA
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: With two sons in an accomplished band, this client wanted to furnish a room in their finished basement as an all-purpose music room. Equal parts recording studio, jam space, lounge, and classroom, this design makes the absolute most out of a relatively small space. Vibrant colors and comfy furniture make it both inspiring and relaxing while movable guitar racks, shelving, and a combination whiteboard/blackboard for brainstorming allow bands of any size to get in sync.
- [Mediterranean Bar and Lounge - Bucks County, PA](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mediterranean-bar-and-lounge-bucks-county-pa-pj-vj~1270919)
  - Location: Chalfont, PA
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This room already featured a built in bar with Mediterranean styling. The other half of the space looked sparse with just a small table and chairs. To add comfort, function, and style we created a high upholstered banquette flanked by narrow bookcases. In keeping with the style of the existing bar we wanted to create a space reminiscent of an authentic tavern near the Mediterranean Coast in France or Italy. The 19th Century hand tooled leather chairs are imported from Lyon France. The tavern tab…

  - Description: This Galley Kitchen is a supplementary kitchen in the finished, walk-out basement of a four story home. There is a full kitchen on the main floor of the home that serves the families daily needs. This finished lower level contains a music room, TV room, large home office and a full bath. Both the music room and home office can double as guest bedrooms. Combining the Galley Kitchen with these other spaces creates a full guest suite with a separate entrance. This level could easily be converted to…

  - Description: This vintage South Philadelphia Brick Row Home with an early 20th Century kitchen addition has been in the same family for several generations. The client's mother was just a girl in 1939, but she remembers her parents purchasing the Art Deco table and chairs at the New York World's Fair. The Mid-Century Modern range was new when it was first installed in this kitchen and it is still working. Keeping the range was at the top of the priority list. The client loves items with a history, the hutch…
- [Guest Room & Home Office - Doylestown - Bucks County, PA](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/guest-room-and-home-office-doylestown-bucks-county-pa-pj-vj~1025736)
  - Location: Doylestown, PA
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: This space was done for the 2014 Bucks County Designer Show House & Gardens. My vision was to do a guest bedroom and craft-painting studio in a trending style, perhaps industrial or modern. This was the third floor of the house, and there were only two bedrooms on this level. The designer working on the adjoining space was creating a nursery, so the design house committee asked me if I would create a nanny’s retreat.

  - Location: Valley Forge, PA
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: This was your average 6' x 7'-6" hall bath in a Mid Century Modern Ranch Home. The vintage mud bed tiles with coordinating green bathtub were removed. The couple living here prefer a shower over a tub. They also plan to retire in this home. Living comfortably on a daily basis is a larger concern than what the resale price might be 20-30 years from now. Keeping core values in mind, they opted to replace the tub with a curbless shower. Detailed planning for accessibility was also a primary focus.…
- [Transitional Bath - Lehigh Valley, PA](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/transitional-bath-lehigh-valley-pa-pj-vj~2689144)
  - Location: Bethlehem, PA
  - Photos: 5
  - Description: This hall bath was originally decorated for the children. Now that they have grown it was time for a transformation into a sophisticated adult space. Custom cabinetry painted grey increases the storage capacity for this bath. Previously there had been a single sink. With an 8' wide countertop we had plenty of room to put in double sinks. Subway tile in a beautiful shade of blue is accented with an opalescent, mosaic tile.

  - Description: Hill Crest Manor is a gracious Victorian farmhouse surrounded by various species of tall, mature trees. The foyer, staircase and second floor hall were designed for the 2017 Bucks County Designer House and Gardens. Kathy Appel, Hearth & Hedgerow Ltd. collaborated with Carol Nagel, the lead artist at Carol Nagel Decorative Painting. - Location: Perkasie, PA
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: This client — a passionate opera fan — was moved to incorporate a proper "Gentlemen's Library" into his home while researching and writing a book on his favorite composer, Richard Wagner. His lifelong collection of nearly 7,000 classical CDs and videos and memoribilia had to be neatly organized in a functional space that allowed him a quiet area to enjoy his music, videos, or work on his writing. This cavernous and angular room features multiple windows, doors, and alcoves that provided a challe…

Archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramist, scholar, and antiquarian, Mercer hand-crafted his castle from concrete. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Hi, what is the brand of the bathtub? Thank you!** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It is a Jacuzzi soaking tub

**Q: are rug** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love the area rug. Who made it?

A: Thank You @maryfergusc I lox that too! The importer I work with is based in Philadelphia, PA. They import hand knotted rugs directly from many countries. Much of what they have is very unique. If you are from this area we can help you source a rug that is perfect for your space! Best, Kathy

**Q: Cannot find the accent color** *(in Paint)*

I am painting the house. I changed from Sherwin williams White Raisin and Honeycomb to Kelly Moore Wise Owl. I want an accent color on the stairs. What would go with wise owl? Thanks.

A: I like the spice color you have below the staircase railing. The gold is similar in value to the grey so it's not contrasting enough. Check out my post on the color wheel and types of color schemes.

**Q: Keep this rug ?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I went to Home Goods with the intention of buying a patterned gray rug and came home with this Karastan Persian rug. My plan was to get the gray rug, paint the walls Worldly Gray ( same as adjoining kitchen) and accessorize with brightly colored pillows, etc. (I have removed the cabinets that flanked the fireplace per some previous suggestions but still have to find a home for the cable box, in case you notice it sitting on the floor.).

So that’s the question,.......stick with this rug and work around it or go back to the original plan? Thank you for your thoughts.

A: Things are progressing nicely!

**Q: Are gray cabinets here to stay?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are building a house and I absolutely love light gray cabinets. Originally we were going white but gray just warms the space up. However I don't want to be too trendy here and make a mistake. Are gray cabinets too taste specific and will they be out of style in a few years?

A: Congratulations summit1978! So glad you decided to go with what you love. The first thing I ask clients is if they preparing for resale in the next year or two, or if they are planning to stay. If they are planning to stay then the house should be designed to make them happy and comfortable. Your home is your sanctuary. If you are spending a few years or decades of your life there it should not be designed to nurture you and your family. Six months to a year before you list for resale you can update to whatever is trending.

**Q: Need help choosing rug** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello houzzers!

I am looking for suggestions for a rug to pair with this couch and two chairs. The coffee table will be switched out to the picture attached. I'm really interested in using a Persian style rug in this room and was hoping to bring some more color into the room. Please let me know if you have any ideas. The room is surrounded by large glass doors which are currently covered with roller shades
The furniture is staying so mainly looking for rug suggestions.
I am attaching a picture of a Persian style rug that I really like but not sure if I can pull it off in this room? Or do I stick with a yellow rug?

A: It often turns out that your first instinct is best. Even though the first one is on backorder it is worth waiting for a chance to try that one. It's hard to wait when you are excited about finishing the room. I often remind my clients that they will live with their space for years, so it's worth waiting to get the item(s) you really want.
