Well, for one thing it is the difference between a $35,000 kitchen makeover and one that costs in the range of $65,000 upwards to $100,000 and beyond. We chose Sam at CKG in Sherman Oaks to manage and design our new kitchen because he came in with the most audacious design (wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling cabinets anyone??) at a reasonable mid-range price. His kitchens are “semi-custom”, meaning he uses prefabricated, machine tooled cabinets and drawers with a variety of finishes you choose from his densely-packed showroom on Van Nuys Blvd. just off Ventura Blvd. Sam is a one-man band. He designs and then executes his design as your general contractor. My husband and I found comfort in that one man would oversee and be accountable for implementing the design, thus limiting the possibility of finger pointing if something should go wrong (which invariably and unavoidably it will). Indeed, there were “issues” that did come up but more critically Sam stayed true to the process and addressed the problems as they reared their ugly heads in good faith and resolved the problems without ever compromising the integrity of the end product. The end result is a truly gorgeous, highly functional kitchen that we love, that truly appears to be custom-made, and, in the one year since we’ve been cooking in the kitchen for ourselves and our one-year old son, has held up to the high bar that this fledgling chef demanded. A: I’ve had good luck with the Shark Wandvac for those exact spots. The crevice tool is thin enough to actually get into window tracks and those annoying sliding door grooves without getting stuck. It’s super lightweight, so it doesn't feel like a chore to run it along the top of baseboards where dust always seems to settle. The suction is surprisingly solid for its size, though the bin is small, so you’ll probably have to empty it after doing a full round of windows. It’s definitely more convenient than lugging out a full-sized vacuum just to clear out some debris from a weephole. **Q: Freezing using less plastic?** *(in Harvest)* Hi all. I'm trying to use less plastic when I freeze things. Plastic is very convenient, but it's not so good for the earth. So.........if I wanted to freeze green beans (mostly cut into pieces), what glass jar would I want to use? I would like to cook them from a frozen state, so I'm thinking I would need the wide mouth mason jars, so they'd hopefully come easily out of the wide mouth jars. A: Just leave a good two inches of headspace so your jar doesn't pull a "pipe bomb" stunt in the freezer. Wide-mouth Kerr or Ball jars are the gold standard for this because they won't hold your beans hostage when you're ready to cook. Annie A: You're definitely not alone, I am busy clearing out their winter stores to make room for the 2026 harvest. **Q: How can I utilize the space without it looking cluttered?** *(in Organizing the Home)* I downsized from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 500 square foot studio apartment. There is no linen closet and there is no drawers for cutlery or cooking utensils. A: I had to adjust when I moved into a small studio too, and what worked best for me was making the walls do some of the heavy lifting. I put up a couple of shelves and a pegboard where I hang utensils and small pans, and I use a magnetic strip for knives instead of a bulky block. For linens, I keep extra sheets in a bin under the bed and stack towels in a basket on a shelf. I also picked up an ottoman that doubles as storage, which has been a lifesaver for hiding random stuff without the place feeling cramped. **Q: Why are people adding Wine Cellars and Vineyards?** *(in Farm Life)* I want to buy a home and in the area I am looking for the homes start at around 600k. I want horse property, and I need about 2700+ sq. ft. for myself and my business and of course spoiled pets. Therefore, at 800K I am looking at junk. Homes above 800K people start adding wine cellars, wine fridges, and bars? Houz recommends it as a good investment stating you can get more money for your home with those features. Here is the problem, this is a trend! A trend! A trend is a fad. They all go out of fashion in a decade. All of my research says, that the wine industry is struggling. The younger generations aren't that interested in wine. Especially, since I am moving to a legal state for recreational cannabis. Therefore just because a house might sell for more this go around with a wine cellar doesn't mean that the next time it goes on the market it will add to the value of the home. In my opinion, these are detractors of the home and a fad feature. Someone is going to have to pay to have them removed, especially if they are adding to the utility cost of the home with that unused climate-controlled room. Therefore I see this as a bad idea to buy a house with either wine cellars or vineyards. Yet again, people are spending all this money on them to raise the value of their home, and the kitchens and bathrooms are outdated and most need to have a complete remodel they are that bad. Yet, the houses with these wine cellars are priced higher than they should be for what is a fixer-upper. I don't understand this mentality. I also don't understand the the short-term thinking of buyers who are paying for these when in a decade, they won't add any value and will subtract from the value of the home. Somebody down the road is going to eat this investment. Not only that, but people even look at how much money (NONinvested money) they have to spend on wine to make these things look "cool". They transform perfect horse pastures into vineyards. Again, a struggling industry. Vineyards take expertise and hard work to get anything out of them (Yes, you can lease them out now, but down the road, as the wineries continue to struggle, they will pay you less and less for those grapes). They also require spraying toxic chemicals that could cause some serious health issues. I not only do not want to own one, I don't even want to live next to one. What is going through people's heads? Why would anyone pay extra money to be sprayed with toxic chemicals? In case you are wondering I grew up in farm country, and know people who have died extremely painful deaths from lung cancer from exposure to these chemicals. I just have to ask why are people willing to pay extra for the perceived status of owning 3 or 4 acres of vineyard to be exposed to the toxic sprays that will damage their health. These are my ponderings as I am starting to search for a home. As you can imagine I won't be buying your home with the custom-built wine cellar or your toxic vineyard. A: When I was house hunting, I focused on what I really needed, like space for my pets and a good layout for my work. Those flashy features often don’t hold value long-term and can turn into a headache. It’s all about finding what fits your lifestyle, not just following trends. **Q: What does everyone think of bird baths?** *(in Organic Gardening)* Are you for or against bird baths? I heard they carry diseases. Have you had any problems having one? I wanna help the birds but I have had salmonella 3 times in my life, and it scares me too. A: I get it, bird baths can spread diseases if not cleaned. I’ve had one with no issues by cleaning it weekly.
