The owner promised me that change will be made and my project would get his attention. After that conversation the progress even slowed down more. Today Grover from Bull Run KB finished the remodel of our tiny master bath, which was completely redone, and now has a beautiful tiled shower, including safety features lacking in our old bathtub/shower. We first met Hakan Boke in 2016, when Bull Run K&B remodeled both our hall bath and our laundry room/1/2 bath. As before, this time around, Hakan met with us at our home to see the space, and as usual, his design expertise and experience was extremely helpful in explaining what was feasible and the type of materials he recommended. Hakan then met with us again in the showroom. The marble tile samples he showed us were spot-on, and we were pleased with his recommendations. Hakan wants his customers to save money where possible, so we were able to shop for the cabinets and commode we wanted at a home improvement store that provides a military discount. The contract also included necessary items such as building materials and fixtures to be provided by Bull Run K&B. Once the project commenced, it took Grover a total of 11 workdays from start to finish to complete our small master bathroom remodel. Most houses built in the 1970s have bathrooms the size of closets, so Grover, with assistance from his sister Pilar, performed all the demo, carpentry, tiling, etc., reporting to Marshad who checked in daily as project supervisor. Marshad kept the communications lines open and provided critical support as needed, such as providing advice on issues that arose, rounding up a part and dropping it off, or arranging for trash pickup, to keep the work flowing smoothly. We are extremely pleased with the results, and want to thank Hakan and Marshad for their oversight and support, and most especially, we are grateful to Grover and Pilar for the wonderful service, excellent workmanship, and attention to every little detail. We started with Troy our designer, whose creativity and obvious love for his job transformed our general thoughts into a beautiful design which was beyond anything we had imagined. We found this very refreshing compared to our perception of home contractors as he never made us feel like anything we asked for was unreasonable and often said that they just want to make you sure we were pleased. I believe this attitude toward customer satisfaction really puts Bull Run Kitchen and Bath above the others as we never felt nickeled and dimed over the little things that really do make us happy. The price we agreed to was the price that we paid, no surprises. Our on-site project coordinator, Carlos was phenomenally impressive as he personally had the knowledge to demolish the original bathroom, manage the plumbing and electrical (this was a big deal), design tile layout for the huge shower, paint the room and install the cabinets, fixtures and smart toilet. He managed his crew very well and was always respectful to our property. He checked in with us daily to make sure he was addressing our preferences as the project progressed. When we were uncertain he offered suggestions. His suggestions always enhanced the overall project. When I think of Carlos, I think “wow” how can someone know so much about so many of the trades and perform each task so perfectly. Carlos and the crew worked long very hard days and they were always cheerful and pleasant which we thought was very important since they were in our home for 4 straight weeks while we were living in the house. The bottom-line is that our bathroom is so much more than we expected. We happily enjoy it every day. On our own, we selected a textured tile type that suited our taste. Working with BRK&B's owner, Hakan, we came up with a design that incorporated our tile, and reflected our overall desires. > Willie Rojas was the principal craftsman, sometimes assisted by his wife. Over the weeks of work, we got to know Willie, who is a delightful man. His skills are remarkable: he built his own house here in Virginia, no small feat. And he did every bit of the plumbing, electrical, carpentry, lighting, tile work, and cabinet installation for our bathroom. Only the quartz countertop and glass for the walk-in shower were done by other vendors from BRK&B's remarkable vendor network. > The tile work was extensive, and intricate. It included not only the floors, but the entire wall space of the shower. The walls include two diamond patterns broken by a decorative strip, among many other features. Willie's craftsmanship was just impeccable: he has the eye of an artist, and the skill of a master. The unseen parts - electrical and plumbing - were done every bit as skillfully. Electrical was major: we had a heated floor installed, along with new lighting circuitry, new overhead lighting and exhaust fans, and a completely new jacuzzi tub. However, we encountered a number of challenges and frustrations with their execution of the project, with lackluster performance in the areas of communications and installation. Our rating for these two areas is 2.5 stars respectively, and our overall satisfaction rating for Bull Run is 3.75 stars. > First, let’s address two examples of communication mishaps by Bull Run. On the very first day of the project, we came home to a fully demolished kitchen, and no one told us beforehand that this activity was happening, leaving us to make unplanned dinner arrangements given we had no appliances. We did set-up a group text chat to ensure timely communications on activities, but Bull Run did not always provide timely updates into the activities. Another mishap on communications involved the lack of advance notice to make paint color, countertop, and backsplash selections. In each instance, we were provided extremely short notice to make these final design decisions. Specifically, we were notified on a Friday and were given that one immediate weekend to make final selections before the Monday that followed. Everything worked out in the end, but the lack of advance notice on Bull Run’s part caused us to make rush decisions. Our perspective is homeowners should be afforded more advance notice when it comes to making decisions of this nature. Installation was another area where we encountered challenges and frustrations with Bull Run. First, in prep for the painting portion of the project, Bull Run lost several pieces of our blinds accessories and hardware and inadvertently trashed some pieces. The accessories/hardware had to be ordered and replaced by Bull Run. As for another example, the installation crew exhibited carelessness around our house by dropping items, moving items haphazardly, and not regularly using protection coverings for the floor, cabinets, and countertop. This resulted in either damaged property or widespread dirt and dust on newly installed furnishings. Another example of carelessness and rushing the job came from the hardwood floor guy that Bull Run outsourced. Sometime during the hardwood floor installation, the crew placed various objects, cut wood, debris, and trash onto our fireplace floor resulting in the pilot light button getting hit and going out. We applaud Bull Run for ultimately addressing all of the aforementioned issues and delivering an excellent high-quality product in the end. I promptly showed him where the phone used to hang on the wall in our kitchen, and that our kitchen was last redone in the 80s after a small kitchen fire. But really, the old cabinets covered half the window, and the old soffets took up space that would have been better used for cabinets. So we connected with Hakan who showed us all sorts of ways we could redo our kitchen and bring it into 2020. The 3d modeling really helped us see what it would eventually look like. From there our main man Sam was our project manager who kept everything on schedule and ensured all the issues and moving parts were on track. Orlando was the crew foreman who was always easy to talk to as he and his folks were actually doing the work. They make it look easy! But I know darn well that 'things' come up. For example, the main water shut-off was leaking even when it was turned off. So Orlando and crew replaced it and were off to the races. So many folks were involved in plumbing, running gas lines, upgrading the electrical service, permits, county inspectors, paint jobs, clean ups and in the end we got an amazing kitchen worth every penny. We had a giant tiled soaker tub ripped out and turned into a walk-in shower, adding a custom wall with a window between the shower and toilet (internet image search inspired). We have a 1920’s inspired farmhouse theme throughout and wanted to keep that in the masterbath. We also had them add a giant window (there was none) and bump out 2 feet into our master bedroom to add a closet in the bathroom and another one in the bedroom. We added recessed lighting in the shower and over the vanity, s well as a new fan/heater. Rhonn was our designer. I have an art background so I had a good idea of what I wanted, it was just a matter of getting it out of my head and onto paper and Rhonn was great at making it happen and was a pleasure to work with. He was patient and made suggestions as I walked around the showroom and picked out samples for selection. He created a 3D rendering so we could really get a good idea of how everything would fit and look, and worked with me again when I wanted to go over a few selections and change some things. Sana was our Project Manager and was awesome. His answer to all of my requests was always “no problem”. He was good at communicating and kept me updated. Juan and his crew did construction. We had them gut the bathroom down to the studs so that the new construction would have no issues. There was some water damage which they corrected and they fixed some issues with the subfloor as well as leveling it out for the tile. I wish they could redo my whole house. They are so courteous and neat. I am picky about how things look and they did an amazing job. The painter did a careful, clean job. They matched the crown molding and baseboard on the bump out to match the existing in the bedroom, it looks like it’s always been there. Edwin single handedly tiled the whole room and did a phenomenal job. With white subway tile and dark grout I was worried about clean lines...he nailed it, making suggestions to ensure the design was perfectly executed with the shower glass placement. I decided to change to french doors on the bathroom closet right before construction. I worked with Sana who ordered them so I could paint them since I wanted to do a DIY Mercury Glass effect on the panes, they arrived nice and early and I got them done with plenty of time to spare. Ted came and added our 5’ wide “skinny” window to the exterior wall and did a great job. He reinforced it with metal beams and ensured it was centered, another super nice guy. I don’t remember the name of the shower door guy but he did a great job as well, getting me a gorgeous antique style door handle that I love. He was also very friendly. Did everything go smoothly? Of course not. This is construction and things happen. The countertop came in wrong postponing things a bit, but the problem got corrected and I absolutely love it...especially since it’s also on the shower bench and thresholds. I would highly recommend BullRun Kitchen and Bath, and I hope to have them redo our other full hall bath someday! I did go to another “all in one shop” when I first started the process but they seemed to care less about getting my business in a number of ways. When small issues came up, Sana consulted Hakan, the president of the company, or worked with Orlando, our construction manager, to arrive at a good solution. Orlando and his crew were top notch. They were punctual, polite, hard working, and skilled. They carefully protected our floors, which were remaining in tact, as well as all of our other furniture and sections of our house. While we had our own sense of design objectives, we welcomed the pros and cons and "have you ever considered this?" guidance provided by Hakan our lead designer (as well as the Bull Run business owner). The work quality is exceptional and they don't just assume that it is - they want your confirmation that it is to your satisfaction as the customer so that they can correct anything - no matter how minor - that you may be less than ecstatic about. Our project was a complete demo and remodel of a 1989 master bathroom. While we maintained the overarching footprint of the bathroom - no shifting of plumbing - we were pleased that, thanks to Hakan's knowledge and expertise, we were able to modify the shower into something considerably more spacious than what we had before. I would classify the project as completed within the quoted budget. The only bump up in price resulted from a non-standard frameless glass option that I learned about and requested during the remodel. (The custom frameless shower surround which is not ordered until all else is completed is on order at the time of this review so while it won't appear in the attached images there is plenty of room to still use the shower while waiting for the installation.)
