> When I have any projects, I always turn to Rene'. She is the most creative/talented/honest and reasonably priced interior decorator! My home was just featured in the Jan issue of my hometown magazine. Every room of my house has Rene's touches written all over them. Without her, I don't believe my house would be special enough to be published. If you want your home to stand out above the rest........call A'llure Interior Design by Rene'.

> Rene is a talented artist and so much more! On a recent visit to Arizona, she magically transformed my house into a HOME!! I had moved several months prior, but couldn't quite figure out where to put pictures and even some of my furniture. She arranged furniture into configurations I never thought of & ended up with a very welcoming feel to my home. Her attention to detail is also noteworthy. She rearranged my bookshelves and other nooks & crannies, once again, in ways I never thought to do myself - making an overall MAJOR improvement.

> Rene is a delightful woman and I highly recommend her services!!

## Community Q&A

**Q: What is the stone on the pillar around the window, please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The stone covers my stove wall and opening into our theater for that price.

**Q: am i being ripped off by my contractor?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi everyone, I live in Sacramento, CA area. I recently had my kitchen countertop remodeled from tiles to Cambria quartz torquay, so excuse me for my cabinetry, they are not that pretty and I'm hoping I can paint them to white one day when I can afford it. I love my torquay quartz; however, I feel the contractor overcharged me. I'm a mother of 2, so I didn't have time to do too much research about my countertop. But now I wish I did mitered edge for my center island so the countertop looks thicker than it is now, which is 3cm. I wish the contractor had told me about it, but of course it's more work for him and he probably didn't know that's what I would want. Anyways, I paid $9,900 for the countertop to be installed. I think my countertop is about 78-80 sqft, but I could be wrong 'cuz I calculated that myself. They did everything in 1 day which I really appreciate (less stressful for me and the kids). But this really worth $9,900? If they charge this much, I feel i should at least get mitered edge for the island... but now it's too late. I just want to know your opinion, am I being overcharged? If yes, I guess I learned my lesson, more research before I start my next project. Oh, I also got quotes from 3 other contractor, one is a chinese guy and he quoted the lowest. Another guy quoted about $8,500, but he is too slow on giving me the quote and kept wanting me to go into the store, but I was really busy with the kids. The third kid quoted $11K, that's why I decided to go with my contractor, he is in the middle, and he promised to finish quick. The other guys all said about 5-7 days. So that's the whole story, what do you think?

Thanks for any comments! Btw, I'm new to house remodeling and this site, so pardon me for my silly question.

A: It looks very nice and it will get better as you move forward to complete your kitchen. Was the $9900 for material & labor or just the install? Your stainless is lovely and the tops are very nice, infact I have chosen the exact same top for a client here in my city for their Kitchen... so check out the pictures as the house gets remodeled for some great ideas.... currently the plans is under my ideabook now as the Thomas Project. We will be painting their kitchen cabinets dove grey and removing the existing corian tops...the backsplash tile will stay as it was installed last fall. The client felt she wanted only to tile last year and that would be all the kitchen needed...but felt this year that she made the wrong choice. For your wishes to have the island with a Mitered edge that would have been lovely, but not necessary...however it is something you can add later, when funds will allow...or you can ask your contractor to price it and go ahead and do it now...he may give you a better deal since you are not happy and he would want you to be happy. It is merely glued to the bottom edge of the top and you can add any edge underneath for it to appear as one solid piece. I had four full slabs 26 lineal feet of counters installed plus an island in Granite in my Kitchen (my island alone was 15 feet long by 4.5 feet wide and it was an exotic D grade) and I paid much less than you in Quartz. I can't imagine paying what you paid for man made material, but California is a much higher market than Kansas! You will love the ease of care and hopefully the pain of the cost will subside with the joy of the beauty of it.

**Q: Why can't I pick a backsplash tile? Please help me, I am starting to r** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have been stalling my contractor because I can't make a decision and choose a tile for my backsplash. I fear that I can no longer keep him waiting so I basically have to make a decision tomorrow. Is anyone awake now, if so, please help me. I want to stay away from using multi-tone glass mosaics as many of my friends have them and I prefer not to have the same look. Of course, I don't want to break the bank but I am willing to spend up to 15.00 per square feet, if needed. The first picture is my inspiration look. The second picture is my current kitchen (there will be a chimney hood installed and the small cabinet will be removed). The third picture is a swirl tile I found that I thought I could use as an accent piece above the range and use subway tiles everywhere else. Please, please help me. Thank you SO much!

A: here are some more

**Q: Wall colors/new bedspread** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Got this new boho bedspread, but can't decide on wall colors. Light blue? Grey? Warm tan? It is a small bedroom, with wood dressers.

A: Wow..that is tough!..it is hard to see the actual colors. I always remove the dominant colors as options, when it comes to bedding, upholstery, draperies, & area rugs...then I see what is left. I look at the remaining pieces in the space: furnishings, decor, etc. As far as I can see. I like the chartreuse (lime green) wall or the window wall and maybe I would choose the Aqua as the accent (behind the bed). Then I would find some fun toss pillows in Aqua, black & Khaki.

**Q: Carrara Marble Vanity Top for Frequently Used Powder Room - Yes or No?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a vintage looking walnut vanity that is 30" wide for my powder room that is used frequently throughout the day. I also purchased chrome cross handled faucets for it. So I have several questions regarding the vanity top.

Would it be better to get Polished Carrara or Satin/Brushed/Honed Carrara? I was told the latter will hide scratches better, however it could stain easier. If I get Polished, is part of the charm/character the scratches that will come? With either I plan on getting a high quality sealer.

Is there any other vanity top material that you'd recommend to carry off a vintage look over the marble?

The vanity is 30" wide side to side, except where the legs are curved and protrude out to the sides. The width at the furthest point between the 2 legs is 32.5". The cabinet doors are inset. I'm not quite sure what the overhang should be on the sides and in the front. Should the overhang on the sides be 1.25" so that the top lines with the legs? But then having 1.25" in the front seems overkill. If I do 1" on all three sides, will that .25" that it will be narrower than the legs be noticeable? I believe with inset cabinets that all 3 sides should be the same? Any suggestions?

Please ignore the hardware on the vanity, the unpainted walls, etc. All that will be changing.

Thank you in advance :)

A: I appreciate and agree with your comment regarding Marble, it is a surface that has led many to have concern...and this discussion could go on for days and days. However, I feel that your statement regarding designers & fabricators being ignorant or dishonest in their comments is inaccurate. It is a personal choice to have Marble in your home...I have three varieties, two are circa 1400. Carrara Marble is timeless, it is proven over thousands of years to be a beautiful surface in any application...including outdoors. It may stain, but stains can be removed, it may dull, scratch and wear...but that is it's beauty. When Meg Ryan had Carrara Marble installed in her brand new Kitchen years ago...the same day, she took tomato's and smeared them over the entire surface of each counter.... you ask why? Because, she wanted to break them in, age them and reduce the shine.

**Q: Staging Bedroom - House for Sale** *(in Polls)*

Our house is for sale. This is the guest bedroom. What improvements can I make to this room that would be cost effective?

Thoughts:
Flower on nightstand. What color/style of pot?
Mirror on right side of bed ?
Pillows- what color and style?
Fabric on end of bed?
Anything on top of armoire?

Thank you in advance!

A: First of all, Please remove any and all permanent (artificial) plants in the home. Fresh plants add life and oxygen. Remove the wing chair out of the room, unless there is a sitting area available, it crowds the space. Equally space out the Night Tables and center the lamps. Place 1-3 small nice leather bound books on the tables. Think of Heaven, Man & Earth on every horizontal surface in your home. Heaven: meaning a light source = Candle or lamp. Man: meaning a man made object = figurine, sculpture, photograph (not in staging) and Earth: meaning = bowl of potpourri or live plant. Leave the Tapestry, it is a statement piece. If you have a piece in the home that is more conducive to a serene environment...then please exchange. If not, no worries...don't remove. No time to repair the walls behind and the room would look to sterile without it. If you have a warm colored throw for the space that you could casually drape across the foot of the bed, that would be marvelous ....then you could display a tray table with a linen and cup & saucer with a glass domed plate of freshly baked cookies & bud vase of fresh cut flowers...this would all add grace & charm space. Making those potential buyers remember your home.
