> Ginkgo Leaf Studio was everything we could ask for (and then more) when it came to designing the landscape for our Chicago area mid-century modern dream home. Jim and Hannah are a wonderful team and their work is worth every penny. If you own a mid-century modern home, there is no other design firm you should consider, regardless of where you live. They truly listen to what you want, are easy to work with remotely, and produce awe inspiring designs that compliment your home and surrounding environment.

> Jim worked with us to landscape our yard during the install of a swimming pool. The results exceeded our expectations. His design and choice of plants fit perfectly in the new outdoor space. Jim's attention to detail and talent for design are exceptional. He recommended hiring Stone Oak Landscaping, we were very pleased with the quality of the work. The plants are thriving! Everything went smoothly and communication during the project was outstanding.
> We highly recommend Jim and his team for any Landscaping project

**★★★★★ — christypeak, Dec. 2025**

> After following Jim’s design evolution for over a decade - it was finally time to call on him for our home’s design. Our project took place in September 2025. Jim’s sophisticated and unique modern/Asian-inspired design perfectly complements our 1963 mid-century home. He listened to our needs and beautifully incorporated them into the design. He visualized our space in a way that we could not. He was a hands-on and responsive general contractor - coordinating the many schedules of his high-quality subcontractors. His thoughtful use of beautiful - yet low-maintenance plants will keep these gardeners aging in place for many years. We could not be more pleased or grateful for our beautiful backyard.

**★★★★★ — Pat & Becca Bauer, Dec. 2025**

> Recently we completed a backyard project designed and led by Ginkgo Leaf Studio. We had found their company online and their design portfolio really excited us. Jim and his team were a pleasure to work with from the beginning. Each visit he spent a considerable amount of time answering questions and giving us honest recommendations to make our back yard look great. Jim proposed a design we had not even considered for a large retaining wall that was unique and in the end we absolutely loved it. He also provided us several beautiful schematics that allowed us to see the proposed end result in great detail. The contractors he worked with who did the build of the project were efficient, incredibly hard working and professional. When an unknown came up, Jim was readily available and helped us to work with the contractors to find the best solution. Overall we were incredibly happy with our whole experience with Ginkgo Leaf and everyone we worked with through Jim, and already are considering our next project with them. Would highly recommend choosing them for your next project if you want something truly personalized to you. Thank you Ginkgo Leaf Studio!

**★★★★★ — Petersen Project, Jan. 2025**

> We own a mid-century modern house that had overgrown original landscaping and original concrete driveway, front walkway & entrance area. We contracted with Ginkgo Leaf to do the landscaping design as well as choosing, negotiating with and overseeing the contractors for the work. The project was for replacement of the driveway, construction of the resigned front walkway and entrance area, and extensive new landscaping for the front yard and around the perimeter of the balance of house.
>
> We are very happy with the results of the project. Jim did a great job with the design and listened to our input and addressed our concerns. The contractors selected were first rate, as was Jim’s oversight of them. We look forward to spring and seeing all the new plants growing and blossoming.

**★★★★★ — Mid century landscape design, Dec. 2024**

> Ginkgo Leaf created an amazing set of plans for our house. We reached out to Jim because he had experience with mid century design and wanted the outside to gel with our 1950’s ranch house. Jim consulted with us several times to make sure the plans he created would work for our intended use. He offered great guidance and suggestions throughout the process. The end result exceeded our expectations and we can’t wait to see our yard transform over the next few years. Ginkgo Lead is highly recommended!

**★★★★★ — Mike & Linda Lenich, Dec. 2024**

> We choose Ginkgo Leaf Studio because of their professionalism, top notch Mid Century Modern expertise and years of experience. Ginkgo Leaf Studio created a landscaping design for our 1960 Midcentury Modern home in western Michigan that exceeded our expectation. It was easy to work with Ginkgo Leaf Studio because; they listened to our desires and concerns, were quick to answer any questions, created a flawless design that enhanced the MCM architecture, used plants and trees that would flourish in our climate and that would provide color throughout the seasons, all while working remotely. We hired local concrete and landscape contractors to work from Gingko Leaf Studio’s detailed scaled drawings. We are thrilled with the results and have had many passersby admiring the beauty of our MCM home and landscape. Thank you Ginkgo Leaf Studio…

**★★★★★ — Jon Tappe, Dec. 2024**

> Very professional. Listens to what you want out of the landscape project and how you intend to use the space.

**★★★★★ — Heather E, Dec. 2023**

> Working with Jim and his team was a true pleasure from start to finish! We went to Ginkgo looking for a complete overhaul of our existing landscaping in which we liked certain things and still wanted to keep, but we also had some areas that needed some serious attention and redesign. They came in and did a complete inventory of all the existing plants, trees, and shrubs and then came up with a completely refreshed plan which was a great mix of existing and new plantings to make our property even more beautiful. When plans were delivered, we also received booklets of all the plants they intended to plant with full color photographs which made it easier to envision before the plantings began. The design was gorgeous and incorporated so much more variety than we currently had as well as adding in more native plantings that should thrive in our area. The overall design takes in colors, textures, and blooming times. Jim and Hannah were onsite to be sure the plantings were in exactly the correct locations before the final planting occurred. We also had a follow up meeting with Jim to go over proper care and maintenance of the new plantings for the future. We are very excited to see how the plants and design will mature in the next 1-2 years. I can't speak more highly of Jim and his team for their professionalism, talent and knowledge.

**★★★★★ — akreykes, Nov. 2023**

> If there was a 10 ⭐️ option, Jim and Hannah at Ginkgo Leaf Studio would be exceeding that! From the initial phone call, to the design phase, and then execution of our landscape plan, Jim was responsive and fun to work with. We are in Michigan so our project was remote, and we communicated via phone, and zoom. We wanted a designer with a mid mod aesthetic and Jim is very experienced in this area. We had interviewed three other designers who just gave us cookie cutter plans, but Ginkgo Leaf provided us with a totally unique plan that fits perfectly with our house. My daughter said, it looks so natural and like it’s all been there all along. The sidewalk is super cool, many rectangles offset and with blue stone runnels at the joints. We even have a recessed planter recessed into the front porch, and a matching planter recessed into the lawn. Jim spoke our language, so it was a very smooth project, and since it was a pretty complicated project, that says a lot. He worked super well with our local landscape company too, and was always available via phone or Facetime when issues arose during construction. We are very pleased, and if Jim and Ginkgo Leaf Studio design your project, whatever style your landscape vision may be, you’ll be very happy!

**★★★★★ — rkrweber, Nov. 2023**

> We had a fantastic experience working with Ginkgo Leaf Studio. Our project was a reworking of outdoor space which brought special challenges in order to match the new patio to the existing contemporary design so that it did not look like an afterthought. Jim’s creative talents as well as his skillful listening and understanding made the project go very smoothly. The result is a beautifully designed and integrated patio with a pergola, fire, and water feature. An added bonus is that Jim and his team were a lot of fun to work with. They definitely deserve a five-star rating.

> We worked with Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design our yard on our 1950s mid-century modern home. Working with Jim and the rest of the team was awesome. We loved their excitement about our home and the process. Not only was working with them great, but the end product went above and beyond our expectations. Our goal was to expand our patio to create a seating area in the front yard. Jim designed a patio and hardscaping in a shape that we could never of even thought of that complimented our house way better than the traditional rectangle we originally planned for. In addition, his knowledge of plants and bloom times ensured we will always have a beautiful garden. If you're looking for a team that really understands how to accent your home and provide you with unique and beautiful plans, we highly recommend working with Ginkgo Leaf Studio!

**★★★★★ — mcm\_lindsay, Nov. 2023**

> Jim did an AMAZING job listening to our desires for the aesthetic look we wanted for our MCM home for hardscape and landscaping, as well as the types of plants and perennial garden we were hoping to create, and taking into account types of trees already on the perimeter to add and create a natural looking living privacy fence. The outcome is fabulous, and we love it so much. It completes the inside/outside design of our home perfectly.

**★★★★★ — Mark W, May 2023**

> Jim is a genius. If you are into mid-century modern design, Jim is your guy and you should not think twice about it. Even if he has a backlog of projects, it is worth the wait. He perfectly balanced our practical objectives for the space with his masterful design and artistry. He did a wonderful job of complementing the existing architecture of the house. He consulted on all elements of the project, providing helpful advice on pricing, “in flight” changes to the plan, and plant maintenance. The team of professionals he collaborates with is top-notch. Above all, Jim has great vision and takes great pride in his work. If you trust him, you will not be disappointed.

**★★★★★ — Peter K, Dec. 2022**

> We’re delighted with the design and execution of our landscape project. Jim and his team created a unique plan that complements and accentuates the modern architecture of our new home and meets our functional needs.

**★★★★★ — Caryn Esten, Dec. 2022**

> It was a pleasure working with Jim and his team on our total yard (front and back) renovation. Their design process was collaborative and incredibly high quality. The end result was as well. In addition, the landscape installation was amazing, and we would be happy to serve as a reference for anyone considering engaging Ginkgo Leaf Studio for design consultation as well as general project oversight of the installation of their work. Highly recommend.

**★★★★★ — Michael Voss, Nov. 2022**

> Initial meetings were thoughtful and thorough resulting in a beautiful and well thought out design the first time. Very detailed drawings were most helpful during installation of landscape. Highly recommend hiring them to supervise construction. Many details happen during construction that cannot be know until digging begins. Highly recommend.

**★★★★★ — Lisa, Dec. 2021**

> Jim created a beautiful hardscape design for our mid-century ranch. He incorporated all of our requests and brought the various living spaces to life independently yet flowing with each other.

**★★★★★ — bobg37, Dec. 2021**

> We have worked with Ginkgo Leaf for three projects now and are extremely happy and satisfied with our choice. The level of service, detail, knowledge is top notch. They also show an ability to adapt to styles and house aesthetics, whether it’s a mid century modern or a more traditional look they incorporate the right design to accentuate the home and property. Would gladly work with them again.

**★★★★★ — LORI Zindl, Dec. 2021**

> Great to work with. The designs provided were fabulous and we were very impressed with all of the contractors involved in the product.

**★★★★★ — Alicia Polikowski, Dec. 2021**

> They did a great job with design and planting can't wait to see what it looks like next year.

**★★★★★ — tosapeter, Nov. 2021**

> Ginkgo Leaf Studio has guided us through two landscape projects and I highly recommend them. Jim has a great eye for design and detail that has really made the most of our small yard. Jim was very professional and responsive to our desires. In a couple spots where a planting didn't quite work out, he was great at suggesting an alternative. The installers he works with are all top notch. Worth the investment.

**★★★★★ — Keith M, Oct. 2021**

> Whether you are local to Ginkgo Leaf Studios or across the country, I can’t recommend Ginkgo Leaf Studios enough for your landscape design needs!
> Even though we were hundreds of miles apart and my design consultations were completely virtual from beginning to end, James at Ginkgo Leaf met and far exceeded all of my expectations!
> He listened to what I was looking for in a front yard design and worked his magic to come up with a design that completely blew my mind!
> What James presented me with was a stunning design for my front yard that made my home the envy of the neighborhood.
> My home went from being your typical, boring, outdated mid century ranch to an upscale mid-mod showcase with stunning curb appeal.
> Ginkgo Leaf Studios truly knows the difference between average and extraordinary!

**★★★★★ — T G, Oct. 2021**

> Even though Jim and his team are in another state, the design process was smooth and easy. If you can take pictures and pull some rudimentary measurements there's nothing stopping you from getting an excellent landscape design created, no matter where you are. We chose Ginkgo Leaf Studio because of their focus on Mid Century Modern landscapes, the fact that they are familiar with our planting zone was icing on the cake!

**★★★★★ — Jay Muse, Sept. 2021**

**★★★★★ — Andrew Wassweiler, Jan. 2021**

> Jim and team did a fantastic job of navigating the pandemic to design and install our beautiful new lower patio. Ginkgo also redesigned and installed old landscaped areas, fixed up our upper patio and solved water drainage issues we were experiencing. Ginkgo exceeded even our lofty expectations.

**★★★★★ — amylheart, Jan. 2021**

> I highly recommend Gingko Leaf Studio. I cannot thank Jim enough for his creativity, expertise and project management. We had lots of ideas, but even more questions, on how to update landscaping for our midcentury ranch. Jim listened to us, took our input, and designed a very cool front and back yard that fit our style and goals. Most importantly, he helped coordinate and communicate with the contractors to make the design a reality. We knew we wanted a patio, but we didn’t know where to start – what design, who do we call, how does it fit in with rest of our yard? But, with Jim handling the whole process, it was a dream. The end design is cool, fun, and we’re outside all the time! Whole heartedly recommend Gingko Leaf Studio.

**★★★★★ — Jessica, Jan. 2021**

> We had a wonderful experience working with Ginkgo for a substantial landscaping project at our home in Milwaukee. Jim took into account the architecture of our mid-century house and came up with a thoughtful, creative plan that matched our mid-century aesthetic. He also made sure he had a solid understanding of our needs and desires for the grounds in the early planning phases. We faced a couple obstacles—including an unusually early winter, and then the COVID-19 pandemic the following season—and Ginkgo as well as their partners handled it as smoothly as possible. Would definitely recommend.

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Knight, Dec. 2020**

> Jim listened carefully to what we wanted and delivered perfectly on target. Fantastic design. We had thought about this project for years and previously worked with another designer on innumerable design renditions. When we still weren't feeling right about the plan with that person, we spent the additional money and went with Jim. He was priced significantly higher but his mid-century style was exactly what we wanted and his portfolio impressive. He did not disappoint. After one conversation and showing him some examples we liked, he produced a such a spot-on design we did not change a thing! He created the exact space we were wanting in a way we never could have thought of - it has truly improved our family's quality of life and enjoyment of our small yard. I would not hesitate to pay more and get the high quality and brilliant design Jim delivers.

> So grateful to work with you as well on other professional projects.
> 5 stars!!

**★★★★★ — larsenkcde, Dec. 2020**

> Jim at Ginkgo Leaf Studio was wonderful to work with. He listened to what we wanted to incorporate into our landscaping plans, came up with great ideas, then oversaw the project as it came to life through his landscape contractor. Jim and his contractor were professional, courteous, and detail oriented. Jim made sure that all plantings were in the proper spots and if a particular plant variety didn't work out he made the adjustments to be sure we were happy. We landscaped both our front and back yards and are so pleased with the outcome!

**★★★★★ — Joe & Linda Pigeon, Dec. 2020**

> We hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design and manage the installation of a new side-yard patio, along with a plan for updating the landscaping around our 1920's home in Cedarburg. Even given the unique challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, Jim and Hannah safely met with us and took the time to listen to our ideas, and ultimately developed a creative design plan that ties in beautifully with the unique design aspects of our home. The result is one that makes the new patio and landscape blend in perfectly with the architecture of our house (and the limited space with which we had to work).
>
> Jim and Hannah not only designed our new landscape plans, but also managed the entire process for us, including soliciting bids and acting as project managers throughout the installation process. And because they have a great relationship with the landscaping company - Endless Summer Landscaping, which was also great - the entire project proceeded smoothly and was finished on time with superior craftsmanship. Throughout the installation, Jim and Hannah remained in close communication with us so that we always knew what was happening. Their work, from design to installation, was creative and professional. We can hardly wait to see our new landscape further mature into the vision Gingko Leaf created for our space.

**★★★★★ — clamom, Aug. 2020**

> Jim and Stone Oak Landscaping did a wonderful job on the design and execution of our new construction home. He really took the time to get it just like I wanted and paid close attention to the architecture of the home. In the end, it looks beautiful and low maintenance like I has asked. Thank you!

**★★★★★ — Matthew Helmerich, Aug. 2020**

> Jim and Hannah of Ginkgo Leaf Design are talented and creative. But what really impressed us was their ability to understand context and to create an achievable plan. We have an Eschweiler designed 1907 brick home on a leafy East Side street. Our yard is small -- not much for visionary landscape designers to work with. They came up with an elegant and inviting design. It fits perfectly in the context of our neighborhood. The landscape plan not only reflects the style and period of our house, it even incorporates some of its architectural detail. Jim and Hannah also understand what it takes to make a project work. We reviewed a detailed, line-itemized plan which allowed us to choose elements most important to us now. Jim put us together with a landscaping contractor who has done an excellent job of realizing Ginkgo Leaf's plans. Jim and Hannah were there every step of the way. Ginkgo Leaf's approach incorporates a fine aesthetic sensibility and practical plan of action.

**★★★★★ — Ryan Sobel, Feb. 2020**

> We hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to design and oversee the build of our dream backyard in Cedarburg. We are incredibly thankful we did. Jim and Hannah took the time to go through all of our ideas and must-haves (including a shed, wood-fire pizza oven, pergola, and fire pit), and ultimately came up with a creative design plan that was better than anything we had imagined. They thought of things that we hadn't even considered. Jim and Hannah, along with the landscaping contractor (Jay/Endless Summer Landscaping in Cedarburg), remained in close communication with us and kept things moving forward through completion. The work itself was top-notch -- no corners cut. They not only delivered on expectations, but exceeded them. The pictures don't do it justice -- we'll be updating them as soon as spring rolls around. We simply couldn't be more pleased and look forward to all the time we'll be spending in our yard.

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> Thank you Ryan for the compliments! Yours was a unique project in a small space so it was challenging but fun. Thanks also for hosting the pizza party for all of us involved in your project when was complete!

> Jim and his team at Ginkgo Leaf created a beautiful and unique landscape and hardscape for our new construction home in Mequon, WI. After auditioning several landscape designers and a few popular "all-in-one" landscape contractors, Jim's comprehensive client discovery process and online portfolio assured us that our final product would be nothing short of breathtaking. Jim's landscape plans fused our personal style with native, hardy and beautiful plant species. His overall sense of design and attention to detail is excellent. Jim's plans included driveway design, all paths and walkways, rear patio, fire pit, architectural/landscape lighting, site trees, necessary retaining walls, planting bed design and all plant species. After plans were completed, Jim recommended several landscape contractors, all of whose prices were competitive or less than several bids we had received from other contractors.
>
> We were also extremely satisfied with Gingko Leaf's project supervision service. Jim and his team were on site everyday of planting to ensure that plantings were positioned as optimally as possible. We have recommended Gingko Leaf Studio to several of our neighbors and work colleagues and would absolutely recommend them to anyone envisioning a stunning landscape design.

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> We are happy that you chose us to bring the landscape around your new home to life! You were great clients to work with and we enjoyed overseeing your project as it was being installed. Looking forward to wrapping up phase 3 this year with you and then seeing your landscape mature!

> Ginko Leaf Studio was an excellent experience from the time that we had our initial introduction meeting through to completion. Jim's commitment to excellence for his customer's complete satisfaction was evident from his attention to asking detailed questions at the planning phase and notating any and all sorts of our random wishes and ideas. That is when Ginko Leaf Studio and his design mindset took over and created our personal landscape masterpiece. The Ginko team stayed engaged and accessible until the project was completed to our satisfaction.

> Thank you so much Eugene for the kind words about your experience with us. We truly appreciate working with clients who have high standards and are interested in design that is not cookie cutter. Since the project was rather large in scale, we are glad you chose to retain us for our project supervision services. We look forward to seeing it mature over the next couple of years.

> Jim at Gingko was great to work with on my outdoor design/landscape work this past spring/summer. He transformed my yard into a showstopper. I had so many neighbors compliment the work as well. If you want a landscape design that isn't cookie cutter, Ginkgo Leaf Studio should be your pick. Jim also knows so much about plants and trees and has reasons why he uses certain species in your plan. He has the knowledge and the creativity to make the design process an easy one.

We have received a lot of compliments on the finished product and couldn't be happier.

> The team at Ginkgo led the design of our landscape for our new construction home. Our home is modern and at the edge of the cliff but none of this presented a challenge for them! They listened to what we wanted and provided a plan that matched those desires. They do a good job balancing what you ask for vs. what might make more sense, but ultimately are very customer focused. We had them architect the plan and then had a local landscaper do the install. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone!

> I contacted Jim at Ginkgo for a completely new backyard and front yard design at our home in Shorewood. Being the prudent consumer I am I had a few other bids including a design-build firm who could include both design and construction in one price rather than a design fee (like Ginkgo's) plus landscaping / hardscaping costs. I received a bid from the design-build firm for the back yard which included a design (which left a lot to be desired) and the price which was quite high. So I decided to go with Ginkgo for the design and then bid out the landscape / hardscape work. Jim’s design was thoughtful, gorgeous, and fit the style of our house. We couldn’t have been happier with the end result and the process overall. We opted to hire Jim as the project manager as well and he was on-site many times throughout the entire project making sure things were going to plan and even showed up with a tape measure on install day making sure the distance between plants was perfect. Not a thing was overlooked during the process. As an added bonus, not only did we get a superior design but the cost of the landscaping, design (front and back yard) and project management came in less than the design-build firm who offered a poorly planned design for only the back yard that didn't’ take many of our requests into consideration . Gingko gets an A+ from us and we highly recommend them.

> Over the years we marched half a dozen or more landscape professionals through our backyard, telling them what we wanted. They would return with a drawing of what we asked for, but we were never moved to action and weren't sure why. Friends referred us to Jim Drzewiecki of Gingko Leaf Studios in Cedarburg. After consternating over his price to draw up a backyard plan we decided to move forward feeling we have already wasted as much money, maybe more, either doing things ourselves or to other landscape companies that did not fully deliver. We met with him in our overgrown, wooded backyard, described exactly what we wanted including preserving the best parts of our woodland and made it very clear we wanted a pergola off the back of the house over the twelve-foot patio doors in order to extend our living space. A couple of weeks later he returned with the plan showing the pergola off to the side (I was not happy) and explained it is best to have it there in order to allow more light into our family room, have the warmth of a fire pit be the focal point and to avoid walking out of our house and around a dining table (of potentially dirty dishes) to get to the backyard. Beyond the hardscaping, the plan called for plants that would artfully integrate into our woodland setting. Everyone else gave us what we asked for, but it never felt right! Fortunately, Jim had the confidence in his vision and talent to NOT simply mirror the design we thought we wanted. Finally, a beautiful hardscaping and landscaping plan, along with a plant portfolio that moved us to action!
>
> The plan was bid out and we selected Jay Stilb of Endless Summer Landscaping in Cedarburg. Given our confidence in Jim we hired him to manage the entire project, as we wanted to be sure his expertise was leveraged from beginning to end. The plan was not straight forward, it called for a lannon stone patio with dining and fire pit areas. A water feature, with a dry creek. Lighting and well over 100 plantings. Jay and his team were very professional and easy to work with. His attention to detail was outstanding. He specifically chose one of the signature rocks because it had a divot that collects water and installed it near a bird feeder. In the midst of chaos, heavy equipment and workers Jay carefully protected a small bush given to me in memory of my father which meant so much to me. The final step of the project was the planting. Jim and his Associate Hannah mapped out all the plants according to the plan with precision and art, checking from all angles to be sure they got it right not just to plan specifications but for our daily enjoyment; privacy, nature, art, birds, etc.!
>
> Both Jim and Jay were
> •great listeners and communicators
> •very, very attentive to all details which meant we did not have to worry or wonder
> •detail oriented yet willing to be flexible on the fly
> •artful in all aspects of execution
> •patient and met us where we were at, sometimes appropriately coaxing me/us along
> •collaborative throughout the process which lead to some enhanced design elements
> Together, their collaboration of art and science have transformed our backyard into what our friends have called a sanctuary.

> After interviewing a number of candidates to create a new patio space and garden, we felt Jim and Ginkgo Leaf Studio were a great fit for us. Every home is special and Jim approached our project with care and respect. We live in a home designed by Russell Barr Williamson and wanted a design that would complement and enhance the setting yet fit in with our contemporary lifestyle Jim went through several design iterations taking our input along the way and respecting our budget. Once the designed was decided upon we also used Jim for the project installation supervision. He was here overseeing the contractors installation, tweaking things as necessary. That supervision was so important the the final look and feel of the design and the contractors he selected were excellent and up to the unique aspects of the project We can't say enough about Jim's professionalism, advice and guidance on our new outdoor living space.

> Our adventure with Jim @ Ginkgo Leaf has been such an exciting journey.
>
> We started our design consultations in April 2015. Over the next few months we bounced ideas back and forth, finalized the requirements, budgets, graduated from conceptual sketches to hand drawn plans then finally to CAD layouts.
>
> Over the next two years for the execution we worked with Jim & Kristin on budgets, coordination/supervision of work with all the subcontractors (concrete pours, irrigation, landscape, lighting, etc.), planting layouts, last minute tweaks, and we saw the front project to completion.
>
> A prime requirement of this project was to be able to phase portions in, and Jim led us through the maze and not once did we ever have to rework an area or step on prior work.
>
> The plants have been in for one growing season now. I am continually amazed, and cannot wait to see the yard at the three year mark - when things have really filled in and matured.
>
> Some of the unique touches include a printed plant portfolio, plans worthy of framing, attention to the growing seasons so that something is always interesting, and a genuinely fun adventure with collaboration at every step of the way.
>
> Thanks Jim & Kritsin. Looking forward to starting work in the back.

> After experiencing some difficulties with retaining walls and drainage, we had some specific landscaping concerns and additional longer term goals. Local help was workmanlike, but not inspired. While searching online, we were repeatedly drawn to pictures published by Jim Drzewiecki, of Ginkgo Leaf Studio. We were excited to find that he was located here in Wisconsin. From our first contact, Jim truly listened and honed in on our goals. He brings an artist’s and architect’s eye and appreciation for site, history, and style, and blends this with a masterful knowledge of plants and foliage. He (and Kristin) responded to our specific needs and requests with a balanced and proportional, artistic plan tailored for us and our site.
>
> Jim helped us to find an outstanding landscaper. Even though the landscaper was phenomenal, we particularly appreciated Jim’s oversight and project supervision, which was meticulous from the initial planning stage through final completion. His supervision gave us additional confidence and allowed us to step back and enjoy the process and results.
>
> Because he was on site so often, Jim was able to make adjustments for various site changes and to fine tune the design. These details would have never occurred to us, and add another level of quality to the landscaping. Jim is remarkably detail oriented (which we appreciate), and his supervision is exceptional. He also quickly accommodated and beautifully planned what became a major expansion of the project.
>
> Jim and Kristin were a joy to work with, and we could not be more pleased. Although this was an extensive and expensive project, we feel that it was well worth it. Not only are Jim’s designs inspired, his supervision of our several year landscaping project was critical in coordinating and obtaining the final results, which we think speaks for itself.

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> Ginkgo Leaf Studio designed the front landscaping for our 1950's ranch home. We have some unique design requests, as part of the goal of this landscaping project was to make our front accessible for a child with disabilities, which included modifying the driveway and front walk into the house. The design captured my desires for an informal look with native plantings and the need for structure and presence in our home. We had the front planted this year and enjoyed the color combinations, year round interest, and really thoughtful addition of plants that will engage our son through texture, scent and sound. The work of Jim and his team is professional, planting recommendations were very creative while working with what was existing, and the quality the work is unmatched. The project has given this home a new life and has made our home not just accessible but inviting.

> Jim Drzewiecki of Ginkgo Leaf Studio created a beautiful, cohesive design for our rather unusually laid-out yard, which was part of a former working apple orchard. A side patio was completely redone to provide privacy and a back patio was added, creating an extension of the home that was nonexistent before. Beautiful stonework created an inviting path to the front entrance. Overgrown, tired plantings were replaced with the most interesting new ones that keep the spaces blooming throughout the growing season and provide winter beauty too. Jim paid close attention to our intentions for the outdoor spaces but we so appreciated his frank and honest opinions and ideas about what would work and what wouldn't. > We love the plan Gingko Leaf Studio created for the yard of our newly built Arizona home. The designers listened attentively to our numerous preferences and needs and put it all together in a fresh, creative manner, perfectly balancing our desires for low maintainance and low water use yet lush desert landscaping with light contemporary-industrial touches and perfect geometric angles for taste and decency. We gained privacy while maintaining our gorgeous mountain views. Jim and Kristin even proposed a tortoise sanctuary, and we are so excited to add the cute little guy to our backyard and our family soon. We are so proud to have our own unique backyard botanical garden, quite unlike the run of the mill yards with polka dot and straight line layouts and all the common flora we see everywhere in our town. > We hired Jim and Gingko Leaf to create a master landscape plan for our front back and side yards, so that we could attack the work in phases over a few years. He and his team listened to all the things we enjoyed and how we wanted to use our outdoor space. They were thorough - for example, doing multiple site visits to see how the light changed throughout the day - and the final plan reflected their thoughtfulness, attention to detail and creativity. The spaces include such a variety of color, and the plants are staged in such a way that something is always blooming. We've seen so many different kinds of birds, thanks to the flowers they suggested.

> We hired Jim at Ginkgo Leaf last year (2014) to design a new landscape for our front yard. All of the old, overgrown and dead trees, shrubs, and flowers had been torn out, so we were starting from scratch.
> We had a pretty specific list of what was important to us - low maintenance, fall color - and also listed by name some of the trees and shrubs we wanted.
> The plan that Jim drew up was pretty much on the money. Almost all of our requests made it into the plan in a coherent fashion. Jim also added some plants that I was unfamiliar with, and they have turned out to be a really nice part of the landscape.
> Our meetings to discuss and refine the plan went well, and we hired Jim to solicit bids and oversee the work. He obtained the bids, gave us the pros and cons of each, and arranged for the work to be done.
> The work was started last fall and finished this spring. Jim was onsite frequently while the planting was being done, and made sure that everything fit together well.
> Since the landscaping has been finished, we have had a constant stream of neighbors stop to tell us how much they like our new front yard!
> The only reason that we knocked one star off is because it seemed at times that Jim had too much on his plate. It took a long time to get things going last summer, and we were not able to finish by the time the weather turned in the fall. The results were just as we had hoped! Jim provided us with multiple bids and advice regarding pros and cons with each potential bid. He provided alternatives when cost became an issue. He was honest and well informed. He continues to follow up after the job was completed. We now have a backyard that we love to spend time in!

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> We had Ginkgo Leaf design and oversee the installation of our new landscape plan. We were very satisfied with the whole process. Jim listened to us and designed something which complemented the architecture of our home and fit our personal aesthetic, cost, and site needs perfectly. Having him oversee the implementation put our minds at ease that all details would be taken care of.

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> Thank you srp1210 for reviewing us! It was a pleasure working with you and your husband on your project. It was especially rewarding designing a patio and landscape that complimented your authentic, mid-century modern home.

> I have used Ginkgo Leaf Studio for several years. They have truely transformed my yard into a beautiful setting. Their attention to detail, timliness, capabilities, and passion went beyond my expectations. The results of their work has been outstanding. The best part is that I get to enjoy it everyday!

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> I turned to Ginkgo Leaf Studio for landscape design around my newly build house.
> As an architect myself, I feared that no designer could satisfy my expectations for looks, quality, functionality and reasonable price of the project.
> Also, as I didn’t have time to supervise the development by myself, I asked their company to not only design but also organize and supervise. It was a wise decision.
> Within few summer months my yard turned from post construction dirt into a truly beautiful landscape. As I asked for, configuration, shape and color of used plants, materials and path ways, reflect trends in architecture of my, rather modern, house structure.
> Jim was executing progress in very kind and timely (as weather permitted) manner.
> My house is on the smaller side in an upscale neighborhood. However, I dare to claim, it is surrounded by the most beautiful landscape. We are receiving countless compliments from visitors and neighbors, but most importantly, my family and I love it!
> The project was performed exactly on a budget that we agreed on and worry free for myself.
> Ps. If there were offered 6, instead 5, rating stars in evaluating Gingko Leaf Studio, I would surely mark all of them.

**Comment from Ginkgo Leaf Studio:**

> Thank you for your kind words Beata. The bar is set a little higher when we are working for a client who is also in the design field. That being said you were a joy to work with and we're very happy with the end result. It was also fun helping you choose the furniture for your new patio. Thank you also for having my wife and I over for dessert and wine around the fire pit so we could see your outdoor space at night!

> Ginkgo Leaf designed and oversaw the construction of a new backyard and side plantings at my house. The design included a firepit and separate outdoor eating area with a wide array of new plantings. The plants were chosen to bloom at intervals continuously from Spring to Fall.

> Ginkgo Leaf Studio completely knocked our project out of the park! Jim and his team are extremely talented and professional. They have an expertise and style that, to us, seemed unmatched in the Milwaukee area. Jim truly listened and understood our unique vision for our outdoor space. He immediately invested his talents into creating a design that surpassed our expectations while ensuring all of it molded seamlessly with the style and layout of our home. He quickly and easily made changes as we needed and gave us a solid plan and budget for execution. We kept the team on to manage our project and their direction through the process was invaluable. The disruption of basically living among an outdoor construction site for 3 months was extremely minimal thanks to their thorough and diligent oversight. The team was a pleasure to work with as well. We invested a lot of money into our landscaping, which would make any home owner nervous, but with Ginkgo Leaf Studio, we always felt well taken care of. They were responsive, kept us up to speed on a regular basis and maintained a presences throughout the process. We are extremely pleased with the results and look forward to many years of enjoyment thanks to the time and talent of Ginkgo Leaf Studio.

> Thanks to Jim we now have a beautiful large patio, seat walls, a fire pit, and pergola -- all put together in a wonderful design that integrates natural stonework, wood and concrete. We love the plant selection Jim recommended and the lovely up-lighting that sets it off at night. He selected items that require little maintenance, in keeping with our crazy schedule. Jim also connected us with StoneOak Landscapes, who was the primary contractor. Jim not only designed our landscaping but also provided the necessary oversight to get the job completed with great attention to detail. He insisted that each step was done to meet or exceed our expectations. This was no small feat considering that we started with a small, ugly, pebbled back patio that collected water and was virtually unusable due to drainage issues. Now we can enjoy our backyard and are proud to host neighbors and friends. We are very pleased with the end result and would highly recommend Ginkgo Leaf Studio and Jim to anyone.

> Ginkgo Leaf Studio developed the design for my landscaping, helped me select a landscaping company, and oversaw the work of the landscaper during all aspects of the installation. Jim was thorough in his questions, seeking to understand what environment I wanted to create. He was knowledgeable in his plantscape and hardscape selections, and creative in the best use of the space. I did not have to worry at all about the installation. The result is beautiful. I love my yard, as do my neighbors, family, and friends. We have enjoyed sitting in the back yard and using the fire pit. Jim and his team go above and beyond, checking on the status of the plants and letting the landscaper know what is missing. I am very happy I chose to work with Ginkgo Leaf Studio.

> First, I would like to emphatically agree with all the positive comments that have previously been posted about Ginkgo Leaf Studio. Jim's particular background and experience give him an edge when considering the design of one's yard. He and Kerry (horticulturist) considered the style of my home (mid-century modern), my personal preferences as articulated during a meeting and in an extensive questionnaire (Japanese style garden, etc.), and my yard's terrain (sloping backyard). As you can see by his portfolio, Jim is able to beautifully design a wide variety of styles of backyard.
>
> Jim not only designed my landscape, but supervised my project as well. His connections and good working relationships with a number of landscapers, arborists, electricians and carpenters made my project come together seamlessly. He and Kerry reviewed every inch of the landscapers' work and made adjustments. They personally placed or helped place plants, stones and other landscape features. They were an excellent resource for lights, fire pit screens, fountains and plant/tree care.
>
> Ginkgo Leaf Studio worked within my budget and laid out a reasonable timetable for the project. Most important to me was their ability to communicate well and listen! Jim is truly a gifted designer. I LOVE what he and Kerry did with my yard. Their work created a huge buzz in my neighborhood. Cars, cyclists and walkers all slowed down as they passed my house to compliment the work.
>
> I would recommend Ginkgo Leaf Studio without reservation.

> I have worked with Jim both in his capacity as landscape designer on my architectural projects as well as a guest critic to my architectural studios at UWM School of Architecture. Jim's architectural education and sensitivity to architecture are a real plus for me when I am deciding on a landscape consultant. His creativity and ability to work in modern and organic modes of design work very well for the type of architecture I design. I highly recommend him either to other architects or to owners directly for thought-provoking and conscientious landscape design as well as constructed elements that may relevant to a landscape project.

> We contracted Jim through a recommendation of an architect. We built our home 9 years ago and weren't happy with our initial landscaping. He redesigned our landscaping and we were able to phase it so that we could do our backyard the first summer, front yard second summer and then some outlyers over our 24 acres the third summer. He was able to save a considerable portion of our plantings, however reconfirgure it and add items to increase interest. Jim was a pleasure to work with, he is conscientious, meticulous, organized and very talented. I respect his work so much that he has been hired and has already made a plan for our historic church.

**★★★★★ — Gene Hanson, Dec. 2012**

> We contracted with Ginkgo Leaf Studio to initially provide us with a landscape redesign in conjunction with the removal and replacement of a retaining wall which was leaning almost 5 inches. We wished to add a walkway from the front of the yard to the back, add plants, landscape lighting, and to incorporate a firepit with a limestone overhang that was seen in a photograph some 6 years earlier. The project would be challenging because 1) the design had to blend seamlessly with the existing landscape and a house which is extremely unique with its large triangular windows and 2) being a lakefront property there was a restriction that no paved development closer than 75 feet from the water. We liked the design so much we made virtually no changes. We then hired Ginkgo Leaf Studio to secure competitive bids and supervise the project. We were extremely happy with how the project went and euphoric with the result. We would have no difficulty recommending Ginkgo Leaf Studio to anyone.

> When I purchased my home, the previous owners had not done any landscaping whatsoever except for putting in a conventional concrete sidewalk. There weren't any trees, plants or flowers in the front or side yards. Gingko Leaf Studio listened to my ideas and, using Jim's incredible visionary and design skills, they created and installed the perfect landscaping for my home. The design included a beautiful winding sidewalk to the front door, a bed of pine trees and red twig dogwoods to hide the lights from oncoming traffic at my "T" intersection, and all of my favorite plants to create a "Country Casual" feeling to match the feel of my house. Since the landscaping was done, Gingko Leaf has stayed in contact with me to answer any questions I might have regarding maintenance, ideas for replacing a tree which didn't grow well, and adding spring bulbs. All you have to do is look at the photos in Jim's portfolio to know that he is an excellent, talented designer. You can't go wrong with hiring Gingko Leaf Studios!

> Ginkgo Leaf Studio was the second design firm I used for my landscaping. The first just didn't grasp what I wanted, whereas, Jim knew immediately the vision I was going for. To say Ginkgo Leaf Studio met expectations is a huge understatement -- Jim took my initial musings and went far beyond anything I could have dreamed up. The resulting yard is a stunner: people's jaws drop when they see my front yard. My landscape has been showcased in two magazine features and continues to generate interest and buzz. Not only were Jim and Co. able to render an amazing vision for my yard, they were intimately involved with project management during installation. That was an invaluable part of the process and I'm glad I opted to have GLS oversee installation. It is not simply a job to them, it is a passion and no detail is too small. If you are seeking something special for your landscaping, GLS is an ideal choice. There is serviceable design out there ... and then there is brilliant design. Ginkgo Leaf Studio embodies the latter; they bring true artistry to their work. Highly recommended.

> Jim and Kerry at Ginkgo did a great job in designing our entire landscape. We didn't want the cookie-cutter project, at all. We also wanted some things that we know would be tough to incorporate--mainly, a swimming pool. Tough to build a pool into a "American Natural" landscape plan. We learned throughout the process that landscape design is an art...Ginkgo proved to be master artists. If there were a 6-star rating, Ginkgo would be deserving. Highly recommend.

Our Master Plan Design includes full-color AutoCAD drawings with precise details, specified plant sizes, quantities, and construction specifications. We also provide a bound Plant Portfolio with photographs to help you visualize how all elements will come together.

**Do you design outdoor living spaces such as patios and outdoor kitchens?**
Yes, we excel at designing comprehensive outdoor living spaces. Our projects frequently include patios for dining and lounging, custom fire features, pergolas, and even swimming pools. We carefully compose these elements to create cohesive, functional, and inspiring environments that truly extend your home's living area outdoors.

**Do you design drought-tolerant or sustainable landscapes?**
Yes, sustainability is important to us. We design drought-tolerant landscapes and incorporate sustainable practices, including the use of locally sourced, durable materials. ## Community Q&A

**Q: tinted concrete?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Has the concrete been slightly tinted as it appears to have a pink hue

A: It's actually a buff color if you look at the back patio photos. The driveway color is just off in the digital photo.

**Q: where did you get the statue** *(in Photo Questions)*

It is of a tall woman in white stone no arms

A: Many online sources carry this statue. Here is one source: https://www.windandweather.com/p/SC1521?aff=6158&aff=6158&gclid=CjwKCAjwiOCgBhAgEiwAjv5whCsjqQG\_i2U3AurVnVDzGwQLYZlr0m7PuknCqIggfkshml8QuT3xURoCChEQAvD\_BwE

**Q: backyard Pool what to do?** *(in Landscape Design)*

We are in the very early stages of wanting to plan ahead for a backyard pool. But I’m entirely unclear on who we need to make this happen. The pool companies I’ve looked at seem to simply help with the pool and pool install. We are going to need a geotechnical engineer, new survey of the yard, proper plan for permits, and a redo of the backyard and deck and then eventually landscaping and irrigation. With so many players needed how can we get a better sense of what this might cost so we make sure it’s doable? Do I get each trade/expert to give me a quote or are there folks who would take on the whole project? So confused. Clearly.

A: I am biased but I would hire a landscape designer who could help you to locate the pool, and design the hardscaping and plantings around it. If they have enough experience, they may be able to help you to coordinate the other players involved. Don't let the pool contractor tell you where the pool should go without a plan for the whole space!

**Q: What to plant? Shrub for woods** *(in Landscape Design)*

We had a tree come down in a storm. It crashed into other trees and killed them. We have an ooen space that I'd like to fill with shrubs. It's shady, rocky, rooty and sandy. The trees are beech, birch snd hemlock. What do you suggest?
The path is where the black hose is. I want to fill the area now covered with sawn tree.

Zone 5b us my guess, Southern Maine.

A: Calycanthus floridus - both shade tolerant and deer proof in the midwest. We love to use the variety 'Aphrodite'.

**Q: The yellow/green plants in front** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are they grasses and what kind please?

A: Thanks for your question. Those grasses are Autumn Moor grass.

James

**Q: Do you ever come down to Chicago?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this patio. :)

A: Yes we do work in Illinois. Happy to talk with you on the phone about your project!

thanks,
Jim
