Frank/Architects was founded in 1993 by Tomas Frank in Berkeley, California. In addition to our work in the greater Bay Area, Frank/Architects has done projects throughout California, in the Czech Republic, and on the East Coast, alone or in cooperation with other architectural firms.

We carefully think through the building systems of each project, especially the structure of the building. We take pleasure in addressing the technical challenges posed by older structures, and in developing effective ways to help them better serve the evolving needs of our clients. We were one of the first users of SIPs (structural insulated panels) in sustainable residential design. We consider the site and cultural context of each project and maintain its relationship to the landscape or the urban fabric. We do make our projects well designed, yet practical, trying to minimize the sticker shock so many clients encounter these days.

**★★★★★ — David Hillmer, June 2017**

> I have worked on a number of projects with Tomas Frank, and his projects are always a great experience. Tomas brings a wealth of knowledge and professionalism to a project, and his feel for Sea Ranch architecture is outstanding. Tomas has a pleasant and level headed approach to any problem, which is a welcome trait from a contractor's perspective. I look forward to the next project!

**★★★★★ — PETER SOLDAT ARCHITECTURE, May 2016**

**★★★★★ — Thomas Timar, April 2016**

> My wife and I wanted to tear down a three-car carport and replace it with a three-car garage with a studio apartment above it. We hired Frank/Architects to design the new studio/garage. We could not have been more pleased with the results. The aesthetics and functionality came together beautifully. The firm was easy to work with--engaged with us and continued to work with us and the contractor from start to finish. We couldn't recommend the firm more highly.

**Comment from Frank / Architects:**

> Thank you Tom for your kind words, I am glad it is working out for you.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Is the wood western red cedar smooth or rough and is it stain?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Thanks for the previous answer. My last question is approx how wide is the window frame? It's difficult to tell if windows are very narrow or a few inches wide. Beautifully designed! Thanks very much!

A: The windows are standard Milgard aluminum windows and sliding doors about 2" wide. The wood is California Redwood and it is kept natural, no stain. Thanks for the compliment. Tomas.

**Q: Are these windows trimmed in black or is the black the window itself?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Trying to do something similar but can't figure out how to do the windows. I need to go with vinyl or fiberglass but it's all either too thick or too thin. i think i could go with a thin window and add trim. So frustrated. I clearly don't do windows. Help appreciated.

A: They are dark bronze anodize windows, no trim. Tomas Frank, architect of this house.

**Q: Spectacular cabin in such a special setting...is the siding redwood?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Yes it is Grade B Redwood 1x6 siding.

**Q: what is the tile on the floor? color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: It is green/gray Heath tile fro Sausalito, CA
