Keep in mind...we just plopped our furniture in from the old place. Drapes - Came with house, but we're keeping them, and I switched out the trim to something closer to my colors/liking. Wallpaper - Taking it down! Hoping to replace with some nice moldings/wainscoating + new wallpaper combo. It currently runs all the way into the foyer and the upper part of the main staircase foyer. Sure, I've tried a few things above the fireplace...but after Christmas I took everything down so I can stare at a clean slate. I do have two pieces of art on the walls that reflect my colors, etc. The two chairs and sofa will stay. I'm open to other ideas and may also hire a professional but wanted to get some thoughts from you clever houzzers. My home is traditional but we have small kids so I like it comfy. Help! TIA A: Lori, A dressier rug would help to anchor the room visually and integrate the elements of your decor. Attached are some "transitional" looks that add color and interest to bring focus to the room without getting too overwhelming. An overall pattern (instead of a medallion) would be more successful at keeping the open look of the room which is so appealing. If you elect to use a more traditional area rug, definitely go with a real hand-knotted rug (not machine made or tufted -- so-called "handmade" -- imitations) if possible to keep a natural, authentic look and feel in your room that you'll be able to enjoy, be proud of, and decorate around for all the years ahead. There's an entire branch of philosophy dedicated to the study of "value". Some attest that an individual cannot even see something until it has value to himself. (This is part of the science of the mind too. The brain filters inconsequential inputs so that consciousness is not overwhelmed with them. We don't think about something until it matters.) In our profession, color is undeniably a value of paramount importance, but if it were the only parameter of significance in a purchase decision, the customer could find satisfaction with any ol' piece of carpet of similar color. So, there is evidently much more than color motivating interest in oriental rugs. And an ability to help our clientele by appreciating all of the value points of interest to them so that we can elucidate the REAL benefits of handmade oriental rugs versus "any ol' floor covering" is how we make ourselves of value to them in their shopping process. When they know that what they are looking at corresponds to ALL that they are looking for, they are in a much better place to proceed with a sense of assurance. As a final consideration (from real life events): one person wants to spend $10,000 at auction to have bragging rights to ownership of an ashtray that Jackie Kennedy-Onassis had in her living room. Another person couldn't care less about who owned something last, and recognizing that a similar object can be acquired at the local Dollar Store is satisfied to have bragging rights to a suitable place for extinguishing cigarettes that costs only a dollar. Without prejudice, in advance of their respective decisions, both individuals are entitled to be made aware of the range of options that are available. When each proceeds to the next step, it will be in line with his or her values. **Q: Look for a similar oriental rug, where did you find it?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: The rug is an overall Herati pattern common in many Persian rugs: Tabriz, Bidjar (Senneh), Hamadan. You won't find a worn out rug like this through a dealer (as a rule); but many similar pieces in good repair exist. If you want the nearly threadbare look, search the online auctions. Just want to add, that despite decades of service (likely in other venues by other owners) that rug still has beauty and utility permitting use here in a significant space. Judging from its condition, the rug deserved more respect over the years; but we can all appreciate that it does deserve respect; and seems to be getting a good bit of it in its new home. **Q: Need help for living room dining room one room paint color** *(in Photo Questions)* Living room dining room Would like to do all white.
