## Community Q&A

**Q: Yes/No - freestanding bathtub for a guest bath** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I own a rustic (not log) home on the river. We have tried to incorporate rustic design elements into all the rooms of the house. For the guest bath, we have found a freestanding tub that we both love, but adding it will mean no shower in that bathroom. The master is being converted into a walk in shower (no tub). It is worth noting that both baths are small and there is no room for making them larger. We both agree ont he design, but a friend thought it would be a bad idea.
So I'm just wondering what user thoughts are on a freestanding tub (with no shower) in a guest bath...the tub we are thinking of is below, but would be the same question for a clawfoot, or other freestanding tub.

A: There are period, race track shaped curtain rods just for this purpose that would work fine for guest shower over the free standing tub.......funky up the curtain as desired. You will need to provide shower for guests as many may not be able to physically negotiate the sitting aspect of the tub. Love the tub, by the way. I constantly acquire cast iron tubs from demolition which I paint and add contrasting color to the claw feet. Where did you see this one? Good luck with project.

**Q: Yes to mirror backsplash or NO.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have a mirror backsplash in the kitchen that was installed 15 yr. ago. Can anyone tell me if it's outdated style and needs to be replaced?

A: With the mirrors everything in your kitchen looks like it is sitting on your counter tops. Your idea of the glass tile for the back splash is perfect. Has a wonderfully expensive look and will stand the test of style changes. When you are completed with that retrofit RUNRUNRUN to the nearest supplier and replace the drawer/door pulls. Rent a tile saw. Love your DIY effort!

**Q: Wood Paneling... Everywhere!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We purchased our house last year and have been debating what to do with the paneling. It is real wood and about a quarter inch thick and was put up when the house was built so tearing it down is not really an option. I'm not a huge fan of painted paneling or wallpaper. We think we want to texture over it. Does anyone have any input on how to properly do this or any other alternatives?

A: The only solution here is XStone or Laminam. You will find it very easy to install or have paper hanger do it.......will look like the mason just left. You will have the result of a fabulous interior surface.

**Q: Painted Kitchen Cabinets (custom job)** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to know what is the standard expectation for the interior of painted kitchen cabinets. Should they be lacquered? Is some roughness to the wood an expected outcome of custom work? Should they be finished the same color as the outside? With the same finish as well? Also, is it custom for the back of the base cabinets to have the wall fastening screws visible and cracks in the back? See picture.

A: I charge 3 times the cost of cabinet painting if I paint two colors. Where one stops with the edge of the interior color is always a confusing issue with the owner and invariably they don't like their original choice of that edge line and ask that it be different. Two colors is not uncommon and can give a great affect when opening the cabinets. For example, one client had aqua dishes and white dishes. We painted the interior Chinese red, the exterior was clear lacquered maple. When the doors were opened you got a serious shot of color. But colors closer in the color wheel are more common.
No, those fasteners should not show and you should have not cracks. That needs to be repaired by your contractor.
The roughness, if it didn't pre-exist, most likely came from debris getting blown into the coating or tiny bubbles formed that weren't sanded out prior to re-coat. There is no real need for lacquer per se. Oil based paints or an expensive acrylic will be excellent too and easy to touch up in the future if you scratch the surface. Valspar Medallion would be my choice.

**Q: Bathroom cabinet** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this cabinet...where did you get it?

A: I sent an email to your web site. Thank you.

**Q: Need curtain panel recommendations...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to hang curtain panels in the sunroom. I was thinking of a double rod with a sheer panel on the inside rod that would be open all the way during the day to take advantage of the great view and slid closed (on rings) during the night to warm the space up a bit. But I can't seem to find a good panel option to hang on the front side of rod. Any ideas??

Also, sunroom is open to kitchen, so colors/style would have to tie in. Thanks!

A: Check out Conrad window coverings. They have an amazing line.
