### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Barbara Mannion, Nov. 2019**

> First an apology to David and Rich for taking a year to write this.
> I do feel though, that this time has allowed us to truly appreciate and understand how well designed our home is.
> I cannot say enough about the positive experience we had working with the team at Barrett Studio. From the initial meeting we knew we were in good hands. They listened to our needs and wants and in some cases read our thoughts and just understood what we were looking for.
> David spent a great deal of time on our property looking at light and sight lines and from all of this designed a home that allows perfect views and great passive solar efficiency. The indoor spaces flow beautifully and connect intuitively with the outdoor spaces and we couldn't be happier.
> Throughout the process they responded to all of our questions and needs professionally and quickly. Even through our many changes they asked questions to understand and responded with good solutions. They stayed on with us through the completion of the home and helped us with some critical interior (and exterior) suggestions.
> Finally they were also just so nice and pleasurable to work with.
> Thanks David and Rich. Highly Recommend!.

**Comment from BARRETT STUDIO architects:**

> We are thrilled to received these wonderful words from you! David was out your way recently and took some snapshots of your sweet abode standing proud in the beautiful landscape. David is looking forward to the post quarantine days when we can visit and actually step inside to see your personal response to living within the space. Best wishes to you!

> After interacting with two other architectural firms, we chose to work with Barrett Studios. We found that they had a high level of integrity with regards to every aspect of helping us determine the wants and needs for our household and how to make those things happen. Our project was quite a ways from there a base in Boulder but they were able to coordinate very well both with us as well as with our contractor and we came up with a highly successful result. Our personal experience with all the staff of Barrett Studio has been so positive that we think of them now as our friends as well as our architects.

**★★★★★ — Thomas McIlwain, July 2018**

> After I bought 70 acres in the rural Colorado foothills, I did NOT want a conventional structure for a home. Because I lived 1800 miles away in Pennsylvania, there were more things that could go wrong due to communications issues. I wanted a small, unique, environmentally efficient house. I did not have a large budget. I considered several architects. I was impressed with Barrett Studios suggestions & thorough consideration of my ideas. They helped with practical suggestions that saved time & money. In my absence, I needed them to interface with the builder. Much of our work was done by phone & email, yet it was thrilling & fun & I learned so much.
>
> The exterior design has surprising sizzle & the interior is so smart. I chose to re-think my budget & expand the plan from my initial thinking, because they were persuasive & right to encourage those changes. Living here is much better because of those ideas.
>
> We've been coming here for 10 years now & get great joy from this very different environment. One son insisted "NEVER sell this house", though we haven't considered selling. The experience here is so different from others in our world. Working with Barrett Studios redefined what our project became in so many positive ways.

**★★★★★ — Cara Rich, July 2018**

> David is a brilliant artist, and Rich and the craftspeople they worked with cared so much about beauty and the place. I felt like these are some of the coolest guys I ever met. When we moved in, it felt like a lot of love had been put into this project, and the beauty resulting from a collaboration of so many is something really special about the house. At first we were having trouble believing we get to live in a house this beautiful. Now we are simply grateful on a daily basis.

**Comment from BARRETT STUDIO architects:**

> We are completely inspired by the simple beauty of your home. It wasn't a surprise to us when Colorado Homes & Lifestyles magazine wanted to feature it in their "before and after" issue. What a remarkable transformation.

**★★★★★ — Art Drenched Life, July 2018**

> We are lucky enough to have co-created our living space with David Barrett and his team at Barrett Studio Architects. We set out with very ambitious goals for our property to support us in many ways: creatively and professionally with 2 working studios (ceramic art and movement); culinarily - with multiple all-season food growing areas, built-in irrigation throughout, a worm composting system and a professional and ergonomic kitchen; health and wellness - with pool, spa and indoor and outdoor meditation spaces; green building - with 10KW of solar panels, efficient geothermal exchange heating and cooling (very important with regard to the pool!); esthetically - we defined our space as an “Art House” because people need beauty to thrive, like plants need sunshine; and last but not least, to support a thriving lifestyle that engages with our beautiful surroundings and permits us to experience the joy of inhabiting an integrated, highly-considered and functional “engine for living”.
>
> We believe David and his team heard us and exceeded our expectations in the design of our mountain paradise. Thank you, David.

**★★★★★ — scottp2008, Aug. 2017**

> Architects are only in the most base sense in the business of creating buildings; they are more essentially in the profession of co-creating manifestations of intention and personality – places in which we feel at home, at peace, and understood. I can say without qualification that Barrett Studio accomplished that in our project on a grand scale. I feel as if our house is not only an expression of my and my wife's person and personality, but an amplification – I feel more myself in our home than I thought possible, and the best parts of myself, the best parts of my mind and heart, find expression there.
>
> David and Nicole did this by listening in the deepest sense to who we were, not what we thought we wanted. They were not distracted by the mundane detail of engineering and caissons and soil tests, although they handled all of those details with ease. They understood us, and they helped us understand ourselves as we created with them. In any craft, this is possible only in the hands of a true master – someone who has learned enough through experience to know how to guide others as they learn themselves.

**★★★★★ — tomstanko, Nov. 2015**

> Since 1988 the partners at Harrington Stanko Construction have completed over 25 projects working with the Architects at Barrett Studio. The creativity and professionalism of David, Sam and the whole staff remain unsurpassed. Barrett Studio does not just create innovative architectural forms; they also work effectively with engineers, contractors and craftsman to implement those designs in the most proficient and cost effective manner possible.

**★★★★★ — meublen, Nov. 2015**

> Barrett Studios is a progressive architecture firm that designs thoughtful, sustainable homes (among other things). We've worked with them extensively, and they're always a pleasure to work with. Their attention to detail and knowledge of sustainable design (beyond just energy efficiency) is both rare and refreshing.

**★★★★★ — Mary Kovach, Oct. 2015**

> My husband and I had the pleasure of working with David and Sam on our dream home. We Couldn't be more pleased with the finished product. The design was a perfect blend of contemporary lines with a Colorado Mountain feel. They did a wonderful job and we would use them again!

**★★★★★ — cchurgin, Oct. 2015**

> Great experience! From the moment David stepped into our home, the remodel ideas started to formulate. Working with us on the feel we wanted to create, he came up with design concepts that met all our needs. The staff worked closely with us along the way, considered our ideas and executed beautifully. We came in on time and on budget.

**★★★★★ — mattcotham, Jan. 2015**

> David and Sam did such a wonderful job on my house! I fell in love with my lot and wanted a house that would be respectful of the site and allow me to celebrate its beauty while living there. David and Sam embodied this ethos even more than me. At conception, they came out and camped on the lot to get a feel for siting and placement of the house. Their preliminary models and drawing were done there with me in the middle of the trees next to the river, which allowed for all of us to get a clear sense for what the house would be like and also to feel in harmony with the setting. Later, their design showed such attention to detail, interplay of light and shadow inside the home, and livability. As a first-time house builder, they walked me through all of my options to control costs and yet get the house that I love, giving sound advice to both me and my builder every step of the way. Now that we're finished and I've lived here for almost 2 years, I can't imagine building another house, because mine is perfect (!) but if I do I will definitely turn to them again! Thanks so much!

**Comment from BARRETT STUDIO architects:**

> Thank you for your review, Matt!
>
> Matt brought his own passion to the table, which makes the co-creative process so much more powerful. First, Matt truly loves the land and made clear that he really wanted to make sure the construction of a house in this location would respect it's natural character. Building in the grove of trees along the river required we surgically insert the structure, rather than impose it by force. Matt also brought rich memories of his experiences of living and working as a physician in Africa. Imagery of lifting a boardwalk above the riverfront landscape allowed us to send a message of touching down lightly as one approaches Matt's home. We like to approach our work through the lens of what might be considered, " gentle architecture". Matt is a gentle soul who would have it no other way. We'd like to clone him as a client and friend!

> David, Nicole and team designed a wonderful home for us in Florida. A long distance project can be a challenge but they made it work. Five years after moving in we are still in love with our home.

**Comment from BARRETT STUDIO architects:**

> Thanks so much for the review! It was a blast creating a special place with you that respects the site - those trees! - and the wet & wild Florida climate.

> Cheers! Maggie

  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: This North Boulder ranch style house circa 1956 was lacking spacial flow, and most importantly, life affirming daylight. The family of three desired a home that lived inside to outside while enhancing their life centered around the kitchen. Yin and yang counter-folded gestures are repeated at different scales throughout – notice the roofline, the kitchen island, and the fireplace as examples. It is a house that balances warm and cool tones, metal and wood, architecture and landscape. While the o…
- [The 2@20th](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-220th-pj-vj~6086000)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: The 2@20th is an adaptive reuse of Barrett Studio Architect’s workplace for 20 years. The decision to evolve this building into two side-by-side residences was inspired by trips to Morocco and southern Spain. The idea of living in community while retaining the quiet and privacy of the riad, or garden, was the inspiration of this modern western interpretation of a dar, or residence. First Floor – 915 sf. Entry Courtyard – 178 sf. Second Floor – 524 sf. Roof Terrace – 312 sf. Third Floor – 188 sf.
- [Pine Perch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pine-perch-pj-vj~2047162)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Pine Perch commands dramatic views to the eastern plains, from the Pine Brook Hills community just west of Boulder. Nestled into a sloping foothills site, the home is a lively beginning for a newly married couple and their visiting children and grandchildren. The continuation of materials from interior to exterior creates visually engaging indoor-outdoor connections. Structural stone walls extend from living spaces to outside buttressed walls, and steel ceiling beams ascend continuously from the…
- [Bluebell Home](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bluebell-home-pj-vj~100739)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Located in Boulder, Colorado, the client was interested in maximizing the site while remaining a "good neighbor" in an established community. A modern interior with pops of bright color is balanced by a softer, more organic palette on the home's exterior. Details abound, such as a tilt up glass window wall connecting the kitchen to an outdoor bar, a glass handrail at the stair, and myriad built-ins.
- [Mountain Mesa Homestead](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-mesa-homestead-pj-vj~5423013)
  - Location: Salida, CO
  - Photos: 19
  - Description: Mountain Mesa Homestead is a couple’s love affair with life and the place they now call home. Before moving from Anchorage, Alaska, Marsha and Michael had a small two-story workshop and house built on the site, which served as their transition space for two years. Now that building has become the guest house and garage. The architectural challenge was designing a new home on this spectacular mesa that would be perfectly suited for their active lives, while harmonizing with the existing building…
- [Nestled Neighbor](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/nestled-neighbor-pj-vj~2711168)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The Nestled Neighbor house straddles the seam between the Dakota Ridge new urbanist neighborhood and Boulder Open Space. This unique location afforded opportunities to play to the natural western vistas while supporting a walkable street with neighborly interactions. Given the tight lot, there was a conscious effort to wrap the ground level living spaces around a courtyard that fronts the street, while stacking active family spaces vertically. The upper floors open to a porch enjoying the view o…
- [Little Ship House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/little-ship-house-pj-vj~216959)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: At just under 2,000 square feet, the Little Ship House is a small but mighty exploration in simplicity, functionality and sustainability. Stretching long on an east-west axis, the exterior features a generous deck that follows the entire length of the house, curving out like the bow of a ship. The interior boasts ample built-ins for storage, dark mass floors to store the abundant sunlight, and a central clerestory. Pair all of this with an active solar array and the home achieves near-net zero p…
- [Stoneview House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stoneview-house-pj-vj~115229)
  - Location: Evergreen, CO
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: This is a quintessential Colorado home. Massive raw steel beams are juxtaposed with refined fumed larch cabinetry, heavy lashed timber is foiled by the lightness of window walls. Monolithic stone walls lay perpendicular to a curved ridge, organizing the home as they converge in the protected entry courtyard. From here, the walls radiate outwards, both dividing and capturing spacious interior volumes and distinct views to the forest, the meadow, and Rocky Mountain peaks. An exploration in craftma…

  - Location: Longmont, CO
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: After their Niwot, Colorado, home was inundated with floodwater and mud in the historic 2013 flood, the owners brought their “glass is half full” zest for life to the process of restarting their lives in a modest budget-conscious home. It wouldn’t have been possible without the goodwill of neighbors, friends, strangers, donated services, and their own grit and full engagement in the building process. Water-shed Revival is a 2000 square foot home designed for social engagement, inside-outside liv…

  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Located above Boulder, Mothertree follows the curve and slope of the land making strong connections to the earth and sky. Each outdoor connection is inspired by existing natural features: The Entry Courtyard encircles a small cluster of mature trees, the Northern Contemplation Garden is rocky with dappled light and a spiral fountain, and the South Patio is open, exposed and perfect for warming in the sun while enjoying the views from Boulder to the Denver skyline. A warm but bright interior pale…

  - Location: Montrose, CO
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Nestled into the soft cottonwood trees at the edge of the Uncompahgre River, this modest home provides a cool, airy retreat from the oppressive heat of the surrounding high desert. The simple form and rustic materials present a humble facade to passerby, but inside a soaring volume and dramatic fixtures lend a sense of airiness. The rear opens to the river, with a generous patio - which mirrors the jogged roofline - and firepit invite riverside relaxation. The young doctor’s work in Africa is re…

  - Location: Nederland, CO
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: Embedded in a Colorado ski resort and accessible only via snowmobile during the winter season, this 1,000 square foot cabin rejects anything ostentatious and oversized, instead opting for a cozy and sustainable retreat from the elements. This zero-energy grid-independent home relies greatly on passive solar siting and thermal mass to maintain a welcoming temperature even on the coldest days. The Wee Ski Chalet was recognized as the Sustainability winner in the 2008 AIA Colorado Design Awards, an…
- [Prospect Carriage House](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/prospect-carriage-house-pj-vj~2281380)
  - Location: Longmont, CO
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: At 480 square feet, Prospect Carriage House in Prospect, Colorado has become home base for a retired couple that spends half of their time traveling in Colorado and abroad. They own and used to live in the attached main house, and now rent it out to fund their senior adventures. This remodel transformed a dark, cramped interior into a lively, modern, yet humble abode. Inside, every wall and nook was carefully designed with a distinct purpose. The bathroom is unconventional in that there is a pri…

  - Description: Following the Four Mile Fire, these clients sought to start anew on land with spectacular views down valley and to Sugarloaf. A low slung form hugs the hills, while opening to a generous deck in back. Primarily one level living, a lofted model plane workshop overlooks a dramatic triangular skylight.
- [Home on the Range](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/home-on-the-range-pj-vj~3497677)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Located in South Boulder, with stunning panoramic views of the Flatirons and Hogback, Home on the Range comprises a main house, guest house, studio, and barns with riding arena. The buildings are a blend of rich craftsmanship, luxurious furnishings, raw and rustic materials, and modern detailing. The owners desired a flowing, comfortable home for their family that encouraged play, interaction, and genuine living. This is a Colorado ranch house, responsive to the barns and animals, mountains, big…

  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: The completion of Home on The Range required a seamless marriage of habitat and horse facilities. Thus, Riding on the Range fulfills a lifestyle that is both public and private. Central to a small community of riders, boarders and equine enthusiasts is the barn, stalls, and outdoor and indoor riding arenas. The architecture of these functions blend a strong reference to local rural forms, with a more utilitarian bent to modernism, and the weathered material pallet of recycled snow fencing, Corte…
- [The Splitstack](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-splitstack-pj-vj~452352)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: The Splitstack takes a dated split-level home and transforms it into a modern, more spacious family home. While working within the existing footprint, the space is transformed through simple architectural maneuvers such as reversing the stair run for better circulation flow (and allowing for a landing playroom!), lifting the roof to reveal enticing views to the Flatirons, and adding a much needed master suite. Extra square footage was also found through the addition of a new detached garage and…
- [Phoenix Home](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/phoenix-home-pj-vj~226817)
  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 23
  - Description: Inspired by the morphology of lenticular clouds that sweep across the Front Range, this home unfurls from the landscape, stretching a curved facade to capture sun and views. In the winter, the low sun floods the space and provides passive solar heating, absorbed by the concrete floor’s thermal mass and supplemented by a wood burning fireplace. In the summer, the roof overhang shades most of the south-facing glass, while the home’s narrow profile and operable windows provide cross ventilation coo…
- [Creekside Courtyard](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/creekside-courtyard-pj-vj~452341)
  - Location: Eldorado Springs, CO
  - Photos: 22
  - Description: With beautiful views of the iconic Boulder Flatirons and Eldorado Canyon, two courtyards anchor this Creekside Courtyard home in place: one opening to the southern sun, the other to dappled cottonwood shade along the churning creek. Architecturally, the thick walled home utilizes recycled content insulated concrete forms (ICF’s) to achieve energy efficient stability in a highly wind prone location. Colorful stucco walls add energy to outdoor rooms, while weathered corrugated steel and cement sp…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Where can I find the corner door pullout?** *(in Photo Questions)*

The pullout in the kitchen corner cabinet is attached to the door and pulls out at an angle.

A: We don't recognize that kitchen. It may be a project from many years ago though. Not sure what to tell you on the pull out kitchen cabinet. You may want to try contacting Wedgewood Cabinetry in Louisville Co though.

**Q: What type of wood and stain on the cabinets?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell me more about the cabinets?

A: Hi, so sorry but we don't have the information you are looking for.

**Q: exterior paint color?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love the mix of materials and exterior color. Can you tell me the paint color and brand? Thanks

A: Here's the answer from the architect: The walls are coated with custom colored acrylic stucco, not paint.

**Q: Curious about the fireplace and metal used, brand of fireplace?** *(in Photo Questions)*

christina.nickerson@live.com

A: Hi Christina, here's the information you asked for:
Fireplace: HeatnGlo RED 40

**Q: What type of marble is this for the back splash? Gorgeous!** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type of marble is this for the back splash with the glass floating shelves?

A: Hello! If our recollection is correct, it is Cararra Marble. Indeed, it is beautiful!

**Q: What is the yellow color around the door?** *(in Photo Questions)*
