Originally, our architect had designed our kitchen in a kind of traditional style (two rows of upper cabinets on the parallel kitchen walls), and then Mark came along and did a sketch that was so different, it blew my mind. He freed up one of the walls and put two islands in the middle, so the storage capacity was almost the same as with the architect's plan, but Mark's kitchen felt a lot more spacious and airy, plus it provided better traffic flow. And it allowed us to put in a bay window instead of the small 'above-the-sink' window as per the architect's plan. So I dropped the architect's plan and went with what Mark had suggested, and I am very glad that I did -- we ended up with the convenient and great-looking kitchen. Also, Mark had suggested these amazing wooden (sapele) countertops in some areas that are easy to care for (it's a special finish that's not afraid of stains and scratches) -- and I'm a huge 'wood nut,' so I went for it, and that's the second thing that gets a lot of compliments. Also, Mark put in all these nifty organizers in the kitchen that are very convenient. Before Mark came on board, I tried to figure out which organizers I want and where, and it was tough! There's so much stuff out there, it's difficult to separate the truly useful stuff from something that you'll never actually use. Mark did our kitchen and all of our bathroom cabinetry, and I am very pleased with his work (our kitchen gets the most compliments from our guests). He is responsible and pedantic (Mark even provided our GC with the special screwdriver that's used to align the cabinets -- it has a different angle than the regular phillips). Also, he is the only person I've encountered during our house building project who is capable of working within the budget.
