For many years, I have designed beautiful new homes and have also re-designed the interiors of older homes to suit my client’s dreams with what I call “interior detailing”. Spacious kitchens, light-filled living areas, elegant baths and complete in-home offices are a specialty of mine. I work with my clients to freshen and update both interiors and exteriors. We start with your budget and vision, and I create detailed construction drawings and 3-dimensional computer images of what the finished work will look like. I also provide step-by-step consulting support through the entire project. I will turn your two-dimensional vision into three-dimensional reality.

**★★★★★ — Jane Griffith, Aug. 2017**

> Joye is what you want in an architect - talented, knowledgeable, ethical, creative, assertive, and patient. She solved design issues in ways that we would never have thought of. She was our advocate with trades and retailers - often asking great questions that helped us to make decisions. When we vacillated on design decisions, she was patient and understanding. She worked to reduce our stress - calm in every storm. It was clear throughout, that her focus was on us getting the house we dreamed of.

**Comment from Reno Architecture LLC:**

> Thank you, Jane. It has been a wonderful journey creating your dream home-together.

> Joye was a pleasure to work with and we would hire her again and recommend her without reservations. Our project involved remodeling a river house in two stages with many restrictions due to the location. She is very knowledgeable and did an excellent job of realizing our dreams. Her designs reflected our taste completely and even more importantly, she worked very well with our contractor. She communicates very well and we always felt that we were a priority even though we know she was very busy.

**Comment from Reno Architecture LLC:**

## Community Q&A

**Q: Huge red brick fireplace!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I don't know what to do here. I'm terrible at design. We recently bought a house with a huge red brick fireplace. I don't know if I should paint the fireplace to my color preference or pick paint colors for the walls to work with the current color. I usually love grey and blue tones but this house feels like I'm going to have to go with browns.

A: I, too, had a similar sizeable brown brick fireplace in a previous home. I agree with the previous comment to do a lime wash or similar (I used a paint product). I recommend a pale grey/taupe tint. I did a similar application using a sponge and dabbing the surface, covering the color but retaining the brick texture. I also recommend stopping by a local paint supplier (Sherwin Williams, etc) and asking what they recommend. Good luck!

**Q: What to do with built ins** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My wife and I are going back and forth with what we should do to our living room, the built ins feel too traditional and heavy for us - especially the large piece above the mantle - and we have considered having all the wood in the room painted to match the white trim in the rest of the house like the trim on the windows in the room - another option was to take down the large piece above the mantle and replace it with a large mirror or art piece - possibly even a stone feature from floor to ceiling in the middle area - we have lots of options but are constantly changing our minds - what would you do?

A: The fireplace seems out of scale ie too short. I agree with the above solution-the white rock renovation above would look great in your room. All white, however. Elegant.

**Q: Ideas for cabinet hardware?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Would love some advice on selecting pulls for our new cabinets. The doors are antique white; the granite is Santa Cecilia light. Definitely leaning towards bronze pulls (rather than knobs).

A: I agree to wait until the kitchen is complete. Things look different once pulled together. Here's my kitchen renovation project-we used a lighter bronze hardware as well as a similar finish on the hanging lanterns and bronze accents at the backsplash. Something to consider if you want something a bit lighter...Here is St Cecelia granite as well-a warmer tone that works well with the bronze. Good luck!

**Q: To paint or not to paint oak railings black?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm trying to decide whether or not to paint our foyer oak stairway railings black or if it's just a current trend that I'll regret in a few years. The hardwoods are Brazilian Koa and the woods don't match up well. Thoughts?

A: KathyH-I love the idea for a gel stain in black. Not as severe but still dramatic, and allows the wood grain to show through. Brilliant. Keep the vertical balusters white; the handrail and newel post all black. Classic.

**Q: Vent Hood Height for a Tall Person** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are in the process of redesigning our kitchen in our home built in 1928.
This is what it looks like right now:

Here is the look we are going for:

The dilemma we are currently facing is choosing a vent hood. We really do like the look of a commercial style vent hood but are concerned with the how far they stick out. I am 6' tall and am concerned that I might hit my head on a vent hood that sticks out 24". The vent hood that is currently installed, a Fabyka which is deafening loud and does not have much suction, is mount at about 5'6" form the floor and is 18" deep and I have no problems with hitting my head.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Additionally any recommendations on brands or specif units would be great too. With the exception of the gas range which is an Electrolux Icon, all of the other appliances are stainless steel KitchenAid.

Here is an elevation of the cabinets with the range:
Thanks so much!

A: Vent-a-Hood. Hands down. Quiet and quality. Speak with your supplier or designer regarding mounting height and options as well as CFMs for your cooking surface. Hopefully below 400 CFM to avoid make up air system. Zephyr also carries a wide array of hoods, including ceiling recessed models. Good luck.
