> McMillan Cabinetmakers did a terrific job on our recently installed bookcases! These were installed in 3 areas of our home; the family room, dining room, and living room. They are solid maple with a walnut veneer. The family room bookcases also have cabinets below the bookcases with bookmatched veneers. They are lovely! The entire staff was great; responsive to my requests and attentive to my design aesthetic, midcentury modern. Becky was a pleasure to work with and very detail-oriented. I'm very glad to have had the chance to work with her. McMillan did such a great job that they are now building custom kitchen cabinetry for us. Vicki L. October 2016

## Community Q&A

**Q: Decorative backsplash under the hood** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this kitchen. Great design and choice of colors. I would love to know what the material is behind the stove. Is it a solid one piece insert or mosaic style tiles? Will appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. Yvonne

A: Hi Yvonne. I love this kitchen too! We designed and built the cabinets, so I don't know anything specific about the tile, but I do know that the patterned inset behind the stove is a marble mosaic tile. Here's a close-up that might help you track it down!

**Q: Medillion cabinets quality.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

we are going to remodel a kitchen. Our kitchen designer recommand medallion silverline products. We found mix reviews for medalition, either very bad or very good. Since they have 4 different levels of products (platinum, gold, designer and silver) I'm not sure the good reviews are from higher end cabinets only or not. Any one use medallion recently? and which product level you are using? Thanks for any input.

A: Keep researching what they are suggesting for you. I believe any kitchen should have at least plywood boxes if you want them to last a long time. Pay attention to the materials, the functioning hardware, and the finishes. Most dealer bought cabinets are particle board boxes or plywood boxes with solid wood faceframes with doors that overlay (sit on top of the frame). Upgrade your hardware to the soft-close types, and upgrade your drawer boxes to solid wood with dovetail joinery. Another key to any long lasting kitchen is to hire a very good carpenter to install the cabinets for you. I can't stress this one enough! There's a lot of information out there to confuse anyone, but these tips are about as simple as I can take it. Good luck!

**Q: Wall colour** *(in Photo Questions)*

I know this has been posted a while, but it's def a favourite of mine! Can you please share the wall colour? Thank you!

A: Thanks for the nice comments! We're so happy that you love this kitchen, we do too! We aren't sure of the wall color since we only worked on the cabinetry. The homeowner selected the remaining finishes and colors. If you want somewhere to start, look at Porter Paints' "Phoenix Fossil" and go a few shades lighter to keep the color in the same family. Good luck!

**Q: Cabinett colors.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please share the paint color used on the cabinets? Thank you.

A: We matched Porter's "Phoenix Fossil".

**Q: Need help picking a kitchen wall colour** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just moved to this new home and I love the layout of the kitchen but I'm not sure about the counter/backsplash/wall combination. I would like to paint over the yellow but I'm not sure what colour. The living room (behind) will be BM Grey Owl 1/2 tint and technically I could continue that colour but I sort of like the idea of an accent wall or maybe full tint grey owl? Also wondering if anyone has painted/refinished counters like this before? I'd prefer something lighter. Thanks!

A: It's so hard to tell if the counters, backsplash, and flooring coordinate the best, but I agree with some of the other comments on here. If budgets allow, change the backsplash to white subway, OR change the countertops (are those laminate or granite?) to a preferred color, and less busy texture. The bright yellow is not working, we can all agree on that! I like the Ben. Moore Gray Owl for the walls, it's a pretty color (we are about to make and paint our client's cabinets that color too). If you want to add a pop of color, what about adding color with your accessories and coordinating fabric on the stools, curtains, etc?

**Q: How to plan lighting for new kitchen and bathroom** *(in Lighting)*

HI all
My husband and I are doing a budget remodel of a kitchen and bathroom. Down to the studs, moving walls, but we're trying to save money nonetheless!
Lighting design is something I haven't touched yet. We're in the process of selecting a GC for the remodel, and I'll ask him this too, but:
1\. what percentage of people hire a lighting designer for their home?
2\. what would one expect to pay for this, for two rooms?
3\. since my husband and I are both designers (in other fields) would it be unreasonable to expect we can DIY this aspect to some degree?
4\. what's the best resource to learn about this type of design? I am trolling the web needless to say...
Many thanks!

A: Your GC will definitely be your best resource for lighting. There are so many products to pick from and solutions to meet your needs. I haven't met a client yet who has hired a lighting designer. We source our own lighting and the electrician hooks everything up. Our clients love the lighting package we sell which we buy from Hafele LOOX Lighting, (12v system, LED light strips.) It might be pricey compared to what you can find at the larger retail shops, but it's a great product. The price can fluctuate, and it all depends if you want on/off or dimmable lighting. Dimmable is the more expensive option.
If you have never worked with lighting in a DIY situation, I would highly suggest hiring an electrician. Good Luck! - Becky
