My contractor initially told that it will blend in time which I was not convinced with. I called chicagohardwood as they are NWFA certified inspectors for their expert opinion on the matter. I talked to Derek and he asked me to email the pictures of the issue and told me that he will call me back once he looks at the pictures. Derek called me and explained that the situation he sees in the pictures will not blend in over time. The white halo we are seeing was due to how the pigmented sealer was applied and since the sealer was covered under two coats of finish there is no chance of it blending in. He also talked regarding this to his colleague and he had the same opinion. He gave me great advice how to talk with the contractor regarding this and how to make things work. He also advised me to find a NWFA certified Bona certified contractor as they are experts in the products we used and may have some suggestions. I truly appreciate the time Derek took to speak with me and his advice. He even told me to send the pictures once the issue was fixed as he is very interested in all things hardwood. We are torn between going with a standard engineered flooring or going with one of these new waterproof engineered flooring that has a thin veneer of real wood, but has a waterproof core. A: Before you make any decisions always read manufacturer installation instructions and warranty coverage first, very carefully. Pay real attention what is really covered, what grading level you get and what interior environmental conditions are required for that product. Engineered flooring is manufactured product so planks were designed and made by different producers with its own features. However, wood and excessive water levels or moisture do not mix very well together. I own a California Split featuring an open floor plan including the living room, dining room, and kitchen. I recently repainted all of my walls in the "common areas," that are visible from my front door. I used SW "Sensible Hue," which is grey/blue, in the living room. I used SW "Stone Lion, " taupe/green, everywhere else. It is a fairly subtle color change. The fireplace surround will be done in Desert Quart Ledgerstone. The oak kichen cabinets are gel stained walnut and topped with Uba Tuba quart. I believe I have a good neutral back drop to begin decorating but I don't know where to start. I have decided to go traditional/cottage. I like blue and green. I have several paintings in that palate. They will need re-framed once I get a direction set. A: BuildDirect (Vancouver, British Columbia) filed for protection from its creditors in Canada on Oct. 31 after it could not reverse mounting debts, according to the Vancouver Sun. It filed for similar protections in the United States on Nov. 1 .BuildDirect Files for Protection From its Creditors-2017-11 **Q: Build Direct Nightmare** *(in Flooring)* I purchased Vanier Cosmopolitan Santos Mahagonay engineered hardwood flooring from Build Direct in August 2011. Please do not make the same mistake. About a week after most of the flooring was installed, began to get cracks and delamination. This process has continued with many many cracks and multiple multiple delaminations. They sent an inspector after weeks of begging them to send one. There inspector took 35 minutes, did not even look at the entire downstairs flooring, nor did he even look at the unused wood also having cracks and delamination occuring. The inspectors report really did not give any specific cause for the problems, but build direct blamed installer nonethe less. I hired an independent inspector who did a 3 1/2hour inspection and provided a documented opinion stating that delamination and checking were a manufacturing issue. Build Direct has offered to sell me DIFFERENT flooring at a discounted price (gee I wonder why). That would mean I would have to pay an extra 25K or so to rip up the current crappy delaminated cracked flooring, reprepare the floor, buy new flooring, and then reinstall new flooring. I am currently disputing the credit card charge. Please do not make the same mistake I did, and do not buy from them. They are based in Canada making it difficult to successfully sue them, and their products are from China which makes quality a question. A: BuildDirect Files for Protection From its Creditors **Q: Problem with Brazillian Teak flooring (Cumaru)** *(in Building a Home)* Hi Everyone. I've never posted before, but have been lurking forever. I love this place! I apologize for not posting on the flooring forum but I know this gets more traffic. We started to build our home last Oct. and moved in in May. We chose Brazillian Teak after seeing Lindy Barts and gardenchics beautiful floors! They are gourgeous! We decided to go with the brazillian teak in the kitchen, great room, dining room, front office, half bath, basically just over 1300 square ft. on our main floor. It is a stunning floor! We get so many complements. Except recently we have noticed HUGE gaps! And I'm talking a lot of them! I did a search on here and I saw one other post where I saw where Lindy was having issues also? We live in Illinois. We have not even gone through a winter yet, so I'm afraid what will happen then?! One gap is large enough that a Quarter won't even stand up straight. What do you guys think? Common problem with Brazillian Teak? We researched the wood and went with this beacause we have a chocolate lab who is almost 100 lbs. and it is such a hard wood. To add insult to injury, we called our builder to talk to him about this, he told us that the place we bought our wood from went belly up. So we can't even call the guy who sold it to us and complain. We do have a whole box of wood left but I'm not sure what good that will do? A: Just as with many standard domestic species, moisture problems are an issue with exotics. Some exotics take a much longer time to acclimate to a job site than what you expect. Also, many exotics appear to be dimensionally stable when tested in a lab but seem to behave differently on actual job sites. Moisture testing of wood with the right adjustments on the moisture meter for the species used, together with understanding of wood acclimation process is critical. No rushing of the job. Use NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) or similar professionally trained and certified installers to have best results. (www.woodfloors.org).
