From our very first contact with Matt and Karie Engstler, we had nothing but very positive interactions. Matt was always prompt in meeting appointment times and kept us up to date with the progress of each stage of the project. His professionalism and knowledge played a significant role in the successful outcome of our remodel. Matt's attention to detail, specifically, project layout, demolition, structural reconstruction and final finishes is second to none. His experience and expertise was evident when it came to making recommendations for blending the new finishes with the existing. The job site was kept clean and safe during the life of the project. With the exception of a few changes we made to the project, Matt and crew completed their work on time and on budget. I have a 1926 bungalow with a small addition that needed work. The outside of the addition was in sad shape and Matt brought it back to life with all new siding and a door among other work that it needed. We have relied on them for a number of projects both large and small – everything from flooring, painting and electrical work in our house to a complete re-do of our yard and irrigation system. In every instance, they have been consummate professionals, always showing up when they say they will, communicating throughout the project, carefully cleaning up what they could at the end of every work day, and completing the job within the quote and time frame they provided. The finished work is excellent and meticulous in every way! It is such a comfort to know that we have such an ethical, honest, contractor we can trust to help us when we need work done at our older home. We would gladly recommend Matthew Douglas Construction to anyone. > One of the first projects we had Matt do was in our back yard where the previous owner had landscaped using a series of concrete slabs that had, over the years, shifted and been lifted by tree roots from a tree that was gradually dying. The yard had become a dangerous, ugly place. Matt removed those slabs and the tree, replacing them with a beautiful ramada and stamped concrete. The pool area was renovated with stamped concrete over the cool deck and stacked stone on the low wall surrounding the pool. Narrow, dangerous steps up to a raised area were replaced with wider, safer steps faced with lovely glass tile. We are particularly pleased with the ramada which Matt suggested we consider instead of canvas “sails” for shade. While they are lovely, we have since realized that those sails easily rip free in our desert monsoon winds – a constant maintenance worry. After five years, our ramada has weathered all those storms easily and still stands strong. > He also reworked the garden with an easier to maintain, more attractive desert landscaping, covered existing concrete in the east yard with stamped concrete to match that around the pool area and, while everything was torn up, replaced a sewer line that had been so poorly installed that it clogged on a regular basis. > This project was a huge undertaking but throughout, Matt’s crew went out of their way to be as unobtrusive as possible, even to the extent of cleaning up as much as they could at the end of every work day. Matt and his crews were always knowledgeable, courteous and completely trustworthy. Mr. Engstler also remodeled the master bathroom, enlarging the shower and putting in a clawfoot tub. The floors and shower were tiled with marble with granite details.
