**Q: My Apt looks plain** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need help decorating my dining area and living room. I bought the sofa's and they've taken too much space so I'm not sure if to buy a coffee table or not. I need to decor the walls but do I really need to stick to red? what other colors can I add??

A: I really agree with Patricia on this one the only thing I would add is in some instances your landlord will allow for you to repaint the walls at your expense. Seeing as red and an almost pinkish orange peel is intermixing in the Kitchen and Living room floor space I don't see how they would care. I'm not a particular fan of the red that was chosen for the Kitchen however it does add extra pop to the white cabinets. I've seen quite a few instances where red and soft green have been added to make the room a little less pale. Alternatively I would probably ditch the dining room set and go for something a little more creative and fun. Something like the images shown below will add a main vocal point to the room drawing your eyes away from any bland areas along with some art and you'll have a great new space. Hope this helps!

**Q: Deciding whether or not to open up wall separating kitchen and dining** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Possible addition of overhead beam with no wall,larger cased opening, half wall from doorway to window wall? I want to be able to see people sitting at both tables when we have family dinners.. Some connection would be great. Trying to avoid redoing floors of both rooms if possible also. Pardon the mess

A: Open Kitchen / Dinning room combos are really in right now anything you can do to give the appearance that your in a wide open space is extremely desirable. Providing there is no support beam 4x4 wood post etc holding up structural support to the ceiling the job should be very simple. The electrical can either be thrown into a Junction box in the ceiling if you plan on using it for something later or can be a direct termination at the service panel. Then you could replicate the width of drywall space that you see in the left side of the photo from cabinet to door casing which looks to be about a foot. Then replicate that width on the right side and add that same or similar wood trim and make a picture frame opening. This will realistically be the most cost effective way to open up the space and keep everything the same. Additionally where you pull out your plate line at the base of the wall will be a 2x4 with 5/8" drywall on both sides giving you 4 3/4" inches of gap between both floors. This could easily be filled with a custom threshold to connect the two floors without having to redo any portion of the floor. The picture shown below gives some idea of what the threshold will look like. Best of luck to you!

**Q: What color cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am attaching a picture of my floor tiles being laid down in my new house. This a snap of the entrance to the kitchen. What color cabinets would look best? The kitchen will be U shaped with a center island. I was really hoping to do white cabinets with a white countertop (carrera marble look a like quartz). What do you think?

A: I personally like the Grey however I don't think that thoughs pictures do the cabinets justice. And just to comment off of Patricia marble counter tops are very easy to care for the only thing that would really effect them is a chemical solvent which most common people would not use to clean with. Additionally if you were to go with a natural cut verse manufactured always keep in mind stone imperfections are what makes the top unique so you will never have marble that fully matches not even if it's from a single stone cut.

**Q: Facade or window change** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are purchasing a Spanish revival home built in 1925. The prior owners put on an addition with windows that don't match the 1925 style. Short of pulling out the large custom windows is there some other way to make them fit the original style. We are going to get rid of the tile surround. Any other ideas?

A: I'm assuming when you say "Tile Surround" you mean the brick and mortar look in the window arches. If this is correct you can have the brick removed then refilled. I'm going to pretend that the exterior finish is Stucco. During the removal of the brick you will create penetrations in the head flashing which is going around the window surround. Additionally in this line of work most people do not like stucco work being that any alterations or modifications made to the formed stucco could essentially create cracking along the repair or modified work surface. Additionally you will want to repaint the entire front of the house to made the fading effect that the UV rays from the sun create over the course of the exteriors lifetime. If you plan on removing the brick I would recommend a good stone mason to carefully remove the brick and a very good stucco contractor for the blending of the existing to the modified stucco. **Q: Lighter 5" hardwood floor or darker hardwood floors.  Which is best?** *(in Polls)*

My daughter chastised me for choosing to stay with my light color palate of flooring as we are replacing our maple with 5" light hickory.  She said I need to choose a darker color as it will hurt resale value if we keep the blonde colors.  I think it is all in the quality and how everything is decorated.  Am I wrong there?  I don't have a current photo of the new installed hickory but I posted the different types of flooring below and our old maple that is being removed.

A: I think you made a good choice as the wall color looks to be a Terracotta brown with a dark wood piano. This leads me to believe your a fan of dark rustic or original wood from the general appearance this being the case I would stick with the blonde wood to brighten up the room just be careful to not go too bright.
