Thoughtful landscape design that brings the home, garden, and entire property together.

Monica Perrone is a California-licensed landscape architect with 40 years of professional experience designing residential landscapes throughout Northern California. She specializes in custom garden design, landscape master plans, outdoor living spaces, and thoughtful solutions for complex or evolving properties.

Residential gardens and landscape master plans specific to you, your home, and your site.

Monica brings together design expertise, horticultural knowledge, site planning, and construction experience to create landscapes that are beautiful, functional, buildable, and specific to the people and place. Her work ranges from intimate courtyards and gardens to large residential estates and multi-acre properties.

Her design approach draws on strong principles of proportion, spatial organization, and composition while remaining responsive to the architecture, landscape, climate, and lifestyle of each property.

Because landscape is part of the larger design and construction process, Monica understands how the landscape needs to work with the architecture, site, grading, construction, and other professionals involved in a project. She brings that broader perspective to the landscape while remaining focused on the client’s vision and goals.

Her approach begins by listening carefully to what clients want, understanding the architecture and site, and identifying opportunities others may overlook. The result is a landscape that feels natural to the property, supports the way you want to live outdoors, and adds lasting value to your home.

Clients often describe Monica as approachable, responsive, straightforward, and easy to work with. She values clear communication and collaboration, and many professional relationships have continued for years.

With four decades of experience, Monica has worked across Northern California and throughout the United States and has taught upper-division landscape architecture design at the University of California, Davis.

Serving homeowners throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, East Bay, Peninsula, Marin, Napa and Sonoma, and the Central Valley.

> Monica is fantastic and, as I'm enjoying our new backyard, I'm already looking forward to working on our next project together. Favorite parts of working with her include: 1) She really understood our objectives, which involved recapturing what had been a two car driveway into our outdoor living space, and generally making our yard greener. 2) She came up with ideas that met the objectives but that we never would have come up with on our own. e.g. the creation of a dining area separate from our patio that has made the patio much more usable and enjoyable. 3) Amazing with plant selection and placement. Yard now has a rambly/"organic" feel that we wanted and hadn't previously achieved. 4) Really fun and friendly to work with. All in all a great experience.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> We have enhanced your lovely home and created new, beautiful spaces for you to enjoy with your family and friends. It has been a real treat to work with you and to see you appreciating your dynamic setting!

> We've had the pleasure of working with Monica Perrone for more than 12 years, providing blueprint printing for her landscape design projects. Throughout that time, she has been an absolute pleasure to work with. She is professional, organized, and always treats everyone with kindness and respect.
>
> It's easy to see the pride she takes in her work. Her landscape designs are thoughtful, creative, and beautifully put together, and her attention to detail shows in every project. We truly appreciate the trust she has placed in us over the years and are grateful for our long-standing relationship.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you, Mona! I could not work (well) without you and your capable team at Modesto Reprographics. I appreciate that you manage the ancient rolls from my clients and all of my trace layers and tape with patience and humor -- you are a very important part of professional life!

**★★★★★ — HU-755563038, April 2026**

> We were introduced to Monica through a local home/garden store that was hosting complimentary sessions with Monica. We had a 30 minute time slot reserved and wanted to get her high-level thoughts on one small corner of our entry. Monica jumped right in and it was fun to watch her creative process. She was very generous with her time. One hour later we walked away with several ideas and a referral to a landscaper we will consult further. We were so happy to meet Monica and based on how much fun we had we definitely plan to reach out to her again when we are ready to take on the bigger task of the whole yard and landscaping.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> It was a real treat to meet you two and to work through options for your entry. I'm very excited about the solution we developed -- you're gonna love it and this planting will solve for many issues while adding interest and beauty!

**★★★★★ — Maureen, April 2026**

> I was so fortunate to have a complimentary garden consultation with Monica Perrone at the charming Emily Joubert home & garden shop in Larkspur. Monica is extremely personable and has so much passion for her work. You can tell she loves being a landscape architect. Monica reviewed photos of our front yard, listened to what we were thinking and questions that we had and came up with a design that we love. She offered solutions to problems we thought were unsolvable. Monica had a myriad of ideas of plants that would work well and complement the existing garden structure. She was very gracious with her time and has true talent. Monica Perrone is the landscape architect that you want!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Maureen! It was so lovely to meet you at the Mart and to solve for your property's challenges together. Please contact me if I can ever help further and consider stopping by again whenever I am offering consultations at an Emily Joubert store. Monica

> It was a pleasure to meet Monica. Her knowledge, professionalism, and shear enthusiasm for landscape architecture shined through, making for a very fun and informative 2-hour session. It was amazing how many insights, ideas, and recommendations she was able to share in that time, complete with a site plan layout. The level of detail provided on the design was also tremendously helpful in understanding the overall vision. I'm grateful for the session and look forward to implementing the plan that will likely be done is phases. Thank you, Monica, for the GREAT WORK!!! I will certainly be sharing your talents with others! Best, RGinis

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> So fun to work with you to develop a design for your lovely Sonoma home! And thank you for the delicious limes from your garden. I will think of you when I use Phlomis seed heads for floral arrangements ... Enjoy!

**★★★★★ — Sara Rhoads, Jan. 2026**

> I have had the opportunity to work with Monica two times: first many years ago for a small backyard project which involved designing a backyard privacy tree hedge and most recently for a large backyard design which involved keeping some structural elements but basically starting from scratch. For both projects small and large, Monica has been a tremendous asset. Her expertise and experience is a dream come true for a novice like myself. I love the plan that she designed, the tree choices, and welcomed every recommendation that she made. I give her the highest possible recommendation whether small or large.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you for the opportunity to work with you again. Best wishes for lots of fun in your new home!

**★★★★★ — Angela Fang, Dec. 2025**

> Working with Monica has been an absolute pleasure! Our home sits on a very exposed corner lot, and we struggled for years to imagine how to make the space feel inviting while maintaining privacy. Monica has completely transformed the way we see our property.
>
> She created a master plan that feels warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed — making full use of the yard in ways we never could have envisioned. Her plans transform an area we had struggled to connect to the house, turning it into a beautifully integrated space for entertaining which will feel like a natural extension of our home.
>
> Although we haven’t implemented the plan yet, every element feels intentional and well-considered, and we can clearly see how it will enhance both the beauty and livability of our outdoor space. Monica really listened to our needs and translated them into a design that fits how we actually live. Her creativity, professionalism, and ability to see potential where we couldn’t have made this process inspiring and exciting. We can’t wait to bring her vision to life in 2026!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> You are wonderful! With some study, everything fell into place! It is a joy to work with you two and it will be a treat to help you realize a beautiful transformation. Thank you for this opportunity.

**★★★★★ — Mark Cardoza, Oct. 2025**

> Monica is awesome! Thoughtful and creative. Your space will be elegant, simple, well though out and useful. You're lucky to have her on your team!

**★★★★★ — Myra Yepez, Oct. 2025**

> Since I’m a creative director/designer myself, I tend to get really picky about design in general. It’s hard for me to trust other creatives until I can really see their work and see that they have an eye for both detail and context, but also have an intuition of what works and what doesn’t. The minute we did a walk-through of my home and I talked about what we wanted to solve for and my concern for making sure the landscaping felt like an extension of the home’s architecture, I knew we were on the same page. She has a great eye and she is one of those rare people who understands how to make something look classic, sophisticated, and timeless—as well as how to make something cool and modern. So after she described her initial thinking during her walkthrough of the first home she designed for us (we just completed her second design!) I knew that I could trust her and all her decisions. She made the process so seamless and was a genuine joy to work with. She knows her stuff. I am lucky to have crossed paths with her. Love Monica!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> You are a dream. Such a happy, happy thing to get to work with you! Thank you, Myra, for your trust and encouragement. I am already looking forward to the next collaboration. Monica

**★★★★★ — tarakahler, Oct. 2025**

> Monica created a beautiful vision for our property and was invaluable in helping us execute it. Our property is large and she created unique areas that individually are beautiful and unique, but also work together to create a lovely outdoor home. Monica is also an excellent communicator and a joy to work with. Thank you, Monica!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> You and Jeff are the best! We have been working together since 2021 and each interaction is uplifting! We have made great progress with your beautiful creek side property over these years ... Thank you for the opportunity to know and work with you and your family.

**★★★★★ — bstseng, Aug. 2025**

> From the first contact via Houzz to delivery of the end product, Monica showed great professionalism, content knowledge, and communication capabilities.
>
> We had a 2 hour consultation which included a site visit. At the end we had a map of our exterior space with layered on elements of hardscape and suggestions for a few green items. We got vetted folks who are qualified and capable to help us realize the project. Monica also offered - many times - her willingness to answer any questions and concerns after the consultation.
>
> The task at hand was to divide up our existing yard so we may create 2 yards, one for our new built attached ADU and one for the main house. In order to build the attached ADU, we demolished an in-ground pool and built parts of the ADU on half of the pool space. The yard, now, is essentially a big glob of dirt.
>
> Our main concerns included: where to place the fence to divide the small yard into 2 yards; overcoming the two yards' "smallness" and starkness once divided; not being frustrated by the long, narrow walkway that one must walk through to get to the attached ADU's front door; where to stash the garbage carts; and overcoming my general sense of overwhelm on what to do about all these issues and not having the foggiest idea on how to go about doing all this.
>
> During the consultation Monica was calm and focused. Of course we spent the majority of her time on hardscape, both for attached ADU and for the main house. We wanted a low maintenance yard space for the eventual rental main house and a somewhat low maintenance space for our own ADU yard. Monica was able to address all our concerns, came up with a plan, and helped us visualize the newly carved spaces. The biggest take-away concept we got from Monica was to "control the eyes and then reward the eyes so the deficits of the space fades." I will aways keep that concept in play when I work/design with any space, be it indoor or outdoor spaces!
>
> Lastly, my general contractor - who was not at the consultation- who will be realizing Monica's ideas also felt she had amazing ideas. He asked me for Monica's contact info so he may refer his future clients who have exterior space projects.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Yay! You are so awesome and fun to work with! Thank you for taking the time to submit this thoughtful review. I have full confidence your improved spaces will serve you well and prove to be reasonable, joyful, and beautiful.

**★★★★★ — HU-286810571, Aug. 2025**

> We worked with Monica to help shape ideas for our backyard remodel, and the experience was fantastic. From the start, she really listened to our vision and needs, then offered creative solutions we hadn’t considered that completely elevated the design. She helped us think through layout, plant choices, and how to make the space both functional and modern while staying low-maintenance.
>
> What we appreciated most was her ability to balance aesthetics with practicality the end result feels cohesive and well thought out, and we’re excited to bring it to life. Monica is also very responsive, helpful, and will guide you based on your budget. If you’re looking for someone who can translate your ideas into a clear, inspiring plan, we highly recommend Monica!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you! That’s exactly how I see it too. I design with love, as if it were my own home, and I want you to be happy. Thank you for your confidence and the opportunity to work with you. Best wishes to you and your family in your improved spaces!

**★★★★★ — charrice3, June 2025**

> Meeting Monica Perrone was enlightening as she is incredibly easy to talk to, and she was attentive to my ideas of what I wanted in my landscaping. She embraced my ideas and needs while she added her expertise, and creativity. She also gave me ideas on how to incorporate my decking with my landscaping plans. Extremely professional, prompt, knowledgeable, and creative. I highly recommend her. Charlotte Rice

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you, Charlotte. A quick turnaround and you are well on your way to beautiful, improved spaces for your lovely home! Please contact me anytime I can help. Monica

**★★★★★ — Laura DeLea, March 2025**

> Choosing Monica Perrone for my backyard redesign was a wonderful experience. I appreciated how she balanced her professional expertise with a deep understanding of my personal needs to make design choices. This thoughtful approach breathed new life into my home and was a worthwhile investment considering the time I will spend there with family and friends in the years to come. For anyone looking to make an outdoor space just right for them, I highly recommend Monica!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you, Laura! It was fun to optimize those narrow spaces for you and your family. Painting the fences dark sure had a big impact and helped your setting to feel more spacious while also improving the view from within your home ... Great design is appropriate at any scale!

**★★★★★ — Michelle Lewis, Dec. 2024**

> I highly recommend Monica for any landscaping project! She knew the questions to ask to help her envision a plan for my backyard. I had other bids, but none of them took into account what "fit" me the way Monica's vision did. Not only do we love our backyard, but we get compliments all the time.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> It was fun to work with you and Ken … LOVE that new brick paving and your specimen Crape Myrtle is quite the star now! Enjoy your improved spaces with your beautiful family!

**★★★★★ — Laura Thurman, Oct. 2024**

> Monica created a beautiful design for our front yard. She asked detailed questions about how we use the space, what we liked and didn't like, and what we ultimately wanted to achieve. She listened and understood our needs and tailored the garden design to our style and preferences. Her thoughtful, creative approach and professionalism gave us confidence in our choice to hire a licensed landscape architect. We know the space will be beautiful and reasonable for us to manage for years to come.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> It's so great to get to work with you two! Thank you for this opportunity. Please contact me anytime I can help with the HOA review and/or the installation. The aesthetic review committee will appreciate the graphics and support I've provided. There are many details to realize that should be fun and add beauty for many years to come!

**★★★★★ — Garrick Buckley, Aug. 2024**

> It was a pleasure to work with Monica to redesign and refresh the landscaping and hardscaping for my entire property. She worked with the existing mature trees and steep hillside to design an elegant solution to meet our needs. She is very responsive and worked quickly with us to iterate over the initial design to tweak it to our liking. Additionally, she provided a plan which lays out the exact requirements and expectations from landscaping contractors. There's no doubt that this plan will save us from any miscommunication during the building process! I would recommend Monica's services!

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you, Garrick. You and Sara have been wonderful to work with throughout the entire process. I'm very excited to see your awesome setting evolve to its fullest potential -- you will continue to make many happy memories there! I look forward to hearing from you if I can help further at any point. Best wishes always! Monica

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Nageotte, May 2024**

> I am so pleased to have met Monica! I am an avid DIY-er but didn't even know where to start in our overgrown and somewhat oddly laid-out back garden. She quickly identified the issues that are distractions to how we want to use our garden and provided suggestions for both short and longterm fixes to distract from those challenges. After our initial consult I'm armed with a refreshed vision for the space, contact information for several trusted GLCs, recommendations for a variety of vendors, and the inspiration for how to improve what I already have to make it charming and workable.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Jennifer, It was very fun to walk and talk with you and Luke! I am excited for you and the changes you are poised to make to improve that intriguing home. I keep thinking you need a great tree (or three) out front for shade, interest, and beauty ... Please contact me anytime I can help further. Monica

**★★★★★ — Ryan Coates, Feb. 2024**

> I worked with Monica recently on a driveway and patio project. She is extremely professional and prompt. She works fast and to the point. It is evident that she has been doing this for years as she can provide in the moment guidance on a variety of design issues. She definitely seeks to create a design foundation for your space to help pull together a variety of elements. Compared to other designers, she listened more carefully and worked to find the happy balance of project, client and design interests together. I wouldn't hesitate recommending her again.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> You're the best, Ryan! Thank you for taking time to submit this review and for your kind comments. Best wishes with this project and always. Monica

> Monica is a talented designer but our expectations were not met with the budget we had.
>
> We were in line to work with another designer who quoted us $3k to give us a master design of our backyard, when Monica called us and gave her opinion on our project. She was confident she would be able to get the project done with a close to $2k budget. That sounded great to us! We'd get a good design and save money. We communicated this budget clearly up front, which was acknowledged by Monica as she created an agreement with us that matched our budget.
>
> Monica was confident she'd be able to get the design done in a couple hours while working with us in person. We wanted two things from this design:
>
> 1\. An intermediary step between us demo'ing our garage and building in a new ADU, a minimal representation of an improved backyard
> 2\. A final backyard design which includes an ADU, demo'ing our garage, and pushing the house back a little bit.
>
> I thought it would be a lot to get done in a couple hours but Monica seemed very confident. As we were working together though, it was becoming clear to me we wouldn't be able to get both of these, so we focused on the final backyard design. This was a disappointment as we now needed to spend more $$ to get the intermediary step, but it would still be less than our original $3k quote.
>
> As confident as Monica was, we didn't even get the final backyard design fully complete. So now we're $2k in and we have nothing to show for it. I was really disappointed by this, because it meant we would need to spend more $$ with Monica for her to finish it. It sucks, but I guess that's life.
>
> My expectation was that given 1 or 2 more hours, it would be complete. And Monica's hours are not cheap. At $350 an hour, this would be an additional $350 - $700 added on to our bill.
>
> Now imagine my surprise when the bill comes back to be $1.5k, way higher than we initially discussed, and way higher than we expected. This might not be a lot of money to some in the area, but for us it would now blow past the initial budget we set by a ton, and way past what we expected.
>
> She didn't provide any extra details either, only cleaned up the messy version which we did in person.
>
> If you have the $$, Monica seems like a great person to work with, but given that she knew what our budget was and what she promised us within that budget, we are definitely not satisfied with the work product we got.
>
> If you're in a similar budget to us, I would not work with Monica.

**★★★★★ — web\_user89253, Sept. 2023**

> Due to its location in a 55+ community, our home has a small, narrow backyard that was daunting nonetheless and remained free of vegetation for over two years. The idea of converting a flat, dirt and concrete landscape into something with different levels and areas of interest seemed tricky. So, we looked at reviews of different landscape designers and were impressed by what we read about Monica Perrone. We contacted her and instantly hit it off. She listened, connected with us, formulated a sense of our likes and dislikes, and offered many ideas that would encompass what we wanted.
>
> Needless to say, Monica was amazing with her vision, her ability to put all our ideas (including her own) into renderings, and thereby, enable us to share in her vision. It was obvious that Monica paid attention to our thoughts and ideas but also, injected her own expertise to guide us toward what would work with our particular situation which is a narrow, small backyard with constantly changing shadows and sunlight combined with our desire for usable entertainment space, easy plant care, and drought tolerance.
>
> The end result of Monica’s design is an absolute oasis. A joy to contemplate from indoors and a truly relaxing space to enjoy when outdoors. We just love it! And to top it all off, Monica continues to care about our landscape and stays in touch, even paying a visit after two years to see how things are progressing and if there is anything she can do to be of assistance. Can’t imagine a better combination of talented landscape designer and kind human being. Thank you, Monica! JAG & RBG

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Thank you for the kind words and for the opportunity to be with you again in this beautiful space. The textural mix and lovely, soothing water are very satisfying as compliment to your home. Contemporary and interesting without fuss … The ashlar bluestone is a home run too. I’ll add photos soon to the project gallery within houzz. Please contact me anytime I can help. Enjoy!

**★★★★★ — Elizabeth I., July 2023**

> We worked with Monica on reconfiguring and designing our hilled SF backyard mid-pandemic with 2 extremely young children and one on the way, so needless to say we were a little all over the map in terms of attention given to the project. Monica was very patient with us and came up with a ton of ideas for a beautiful, family friendly backyard space. She listened to what we really wanted: a safe play area, gardening space, as many fruit trees as possible in the space we had, drought tolerant plants, creative solutions to make it friendly for small kids, a space for backyard chickens and even a future possible space for bees, a design that was approachable in terms of maintenance required, etc). Monica did a beautiful job designing our project and adjusting to our wants, needs, and (perhaps most importantly for us) budget. She came back after our project was done to help teach us how to espalier the fruit trees appropriately and has followed up even years later to check in and see how the backyard is doing. She interfaced a lot with the contractor we used to make sure things were as they should be, which was extremely helpful. All in all, we found Monica to be both personable and professional, extremely approachable, very understanding and super creative yet practical at the same time with design components. We were left with a backyard space that our kids LOVE and use every day. They can go out and pick fruits and vegetables for meals, collect eggs from "their" chickens and slide from tier to tier. We used to think a big, flat backyard was the ideal, but Monica helped prove us wrong--an SF tiered backyard can be just as fun as a big flat space. We would work with her again in a heartbeat for any landscape architecture project.

**Comment from Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture:**

> Elizabeth, You and all of the members of your beautiful family were a treat to work with! It has been fun to see you all participating in the improved spaces and I am so happy I could assist you in adding value and joy. Thank you for the opportunity and the gift of your time in contributing this thoughtful review and images. Please contact me anytime I can help further. Monica

> I was looking for someone who could help us create a traditional English/French style garden for our home while still being mindful of our drought conditions in California. Monica took the time to understand our vision before developing the plans to bring it to life. Her trained eye saw opportunities I never would have seen, and she was creative about finding solutions when things needed to shift. She was always patient when we had questions and took the time to explain things to us when we needed more information. She was always clear that her end goal was to make sure we were happy with our new outdoor space … and we are!

> Monica has such great talent! She turned our tired yard into a lively and fun space to enjoy with our family. She listened closely to our needs and our desire for a cohesive plan when we couldn't envision it ourselves. It turned out spectacular, better than I could have imagined. It looks beautiful now and I am so looking forward to seeing it fill in over the coming years. My only regret is that I worried so much in the beginning - there was no need for that! I highly recommend Monica's services.

> First of all, Monica is a transformation specialist. She's also a lot of FUN and her beautiful smile never faltered no matter how miserably hot it became during our project. Her concepts and drawings are excellent, plus she has the skills and leadership abilities to work with all the sub-contractors who loved her as much as we did. Her vision, creativity and hands-on attention to detail were impressive. We had a 6 week deadline before an event, and everything was accomplished on time. She's a real PRO! THANK YOU, Monica!

> One of the best decision I’ve made for my home is calling on Monica. She is friendly, professional and down to earth. One thing I’ve made clear to her over the phone was .. I have a limited budget and my backyard small. That did not put her off... she came in with that smile you see on her photo. She looked around the yard, asked simple questions like , flowers ,plants, colors and style I want. I told her that but I emphasized more on what I HATE about my yard. ( the ugly wooden fence , the messy trees and my never-ending planting and uprooting plants. ) She gave me only positive response to every negative comment I made. Like... painting the fence , admiring the trees and planting the plants I like. 1 year later ... spending about $8000 more for plants and gardener .... my backyard turned out to be my favorite place to hang-out. I LOVE ❤️ my little yard. I love the once ugly fence and I appreciate the trees which I once thought was nothing but a mess..Thank you Monica!!!

> In 2015 I had the fortunate experience of locating Monica Perrone on Houzz and hiring her to redesign the landscape surrounding my 100 year old craftsman style home. Monica is personable, ethical, experienced and an excellent listener. After hearing my disorganized ideas she miraculously created a lovely master plan. It incorporates the best elements of everything I like. She designed both a hardscape (rock, concrete, stone, brick, fence) and landscape (trees, bushes, grasses) plan which includes tranquility, energy, interesting elements, plants and trees that thrive in my area. Monica enhanced my old craftsman home and gave it a fresh appearance by paying attention to the architectural and garden elements.
>
> She paid attention to the front, back and side yards creating an attractive balance. Fun fact - I have had friends come to visit who cannot locate my house because of the incredible transformation and new curb appeal! Monica continues to give me help and ideas when I contact her. **★★★★★ — SailM, Feb. 2015**

> My first glimpse of Monica Perrone was in 2006 as I watched her step out of her vehicle wearing those apple green pumps. This was a good sign, I told myself... anyone wearing those had to have style! By now I was looking for the little things, the tip offs that would prove we finally found someone who would take this yard of ours where we wanted to be. Others had disappointed us and numerous times, I might add. They weren't on time and when they did arrive they wouldn't listen; they drew plans that had nothing to do with us, they were overpriced and if that wasn't bad enough, they lacked vision. Were we ever going to find someone who would embrace this project as though it was their own or was that too unrealistic and just too much to ask?
>
> Wait, Perhaps now we had the real thing. Monica walked with us throughout our property, all the while listening intently and taking copious notes (no one had ever taken notes!) as my husband and I chattered our frustrations and dreams, talking over each other in excitement, because now it had occurred to us that we did indeed have a listener. But did our new best friend have any talent?
>
> Yes, it turned out, and plenty of it. Monica proved to be the perfect fit for us. She not only presented a plan that took our breath away, but a plan that was practical and which solved our myriad of problems. Monica has become our problem solver. I continue to be in awe of her as she takes on our quandaries, immediately, on site. How refreshing is that? No, it's not... I'll get back to you with this, as you wait weeks for a reply. It's... let's do this, as she grabs her tablet and begins to sketch. Monica is an artist... an artist in your garden, and what a gift she is!
>
> And so Monica has transformed the meandering three acre yard of my childhood home, which had no rhyme or reason, into a collection of gardens, one just as interesting as the next. She taught me to rid myself of things I didn't love, to experiment with ideas I hadn't considered, and to appreciate that which had worked well here in the past. We pulled, planned and planted together. Monica has been worth the money we've spent but certainly she's been more than that. She's embraced this property lovingly and, most importantly, she planned for its change while respecting its history and that is what placed her a cut above.
>
> I can't imagine a time when I will be finished here. Gardens are never truly completed... they're always changing... there's a quote to that effect by someone. But that's the good news... good news because it will give me the opportunity to give Monica a call. We'll chat, stroll and sketch and, once again, I'll have an artist in my garden.

> I have been in the stone industry for many years, and have been lucky to work with Monica Perrone on many projects in the past. Aside from the attention to detail that she brings to a job, it is very rare to see someone who has such a passion for the design of someone else's home. It is easy to fall in love with your own yard or project, but to care as much for another's is quite unique. I can honestly say that when I give a referral for Monica, I know that I won't have to worry about regretting the decision to do so. On numerous occasions I have had the client call once the project was complete, and thank me once again for recommending Monica. If you want someone to bring your dream to fruition, then working with Monica is exactly what you need to do.

> Monica Perrone is one of the few educated, licensed and experienced landscape architects in the area. My husband and I have worked with Monica on two different residential yard projects and she exceeded our expectations both in design quality and overall job performance. She goes above and beyond for her clients, thoroughly researching ideas to ensure satisfaction. She sent us photos of hedges, trees, flowering shrubs and even fence designs to help us solidify our vision. Her work involves every aspect of the project including pools, hardscape, fencing, lighting, irrigation and of course plants.

> We've worked with Monica Perrone Landscape Architecture on two projects and we're at the beginning of a third. If you're serious about creating an environment for which you will thank yourself for the well placed investment on a daily basis years after, you'll want to connect with Monica and her team.
>
> Monica is the consummate professional. She is an architect, an artist, and one might argue a form of botanical psychologist. She creates beauty, calm, and peace through her work and you and your family will be the beneficiaries. Her work is also quite practical and focused towards a useful and enjoyable space. She brings with her multiple layers of knowledge through both formal education and practical experience. You'll find her to be a good listener and a great collaborator. Whether you know the latin name of multiple plants or just know that you want a space to enjoy, Monica will be an excellent match for you.
>
> Our largest project with Monica and her team was a total demolition and rebuilding of a new backyard space. Monica was challenged with a strangely shaped lot as a canvas, our insistence on a pool design that was not off the shelf at all, using plantings that balanced our desire to see some of our beloved east coast in our back yard, but didn't drain the water supply, and all within a budget. It was done well and with attention to the smallest of details, on time, and within budget. Besides being a paradise that our family enjoys daily, it's also, objectively speaking, a work of art. We couldn't recommend Monica Perrone and her team more highly.

> I am a landscape contractor who has installed a number of projects created by Monica Perrone. She takes great pride in detail and realizes many aspects pertaining to the overall project that most wouldn't even include within a given spectrum. When allowed the opportunity, Monica makes job site visits to ensure her vision is carried out with the same detail she upholds to be so important. I can say her clients too have a great concept of what their project should look like. I've seen Monica's poster boards used for presentation to her clients containing numerous photos and/ or mock ups of what their future yard is to become. Commonly, she provides the client with a post project pictorial gift portraying the yard transformation. Monica Perrone gives her projects 110% and always conducts herself in a professional manner.

> We are delighted to be working with Monica again after our first project with her on our front yard landscaping in 2005. Here we are again, 10 years later, eager to tackle the back yard and pool remodel. Monica is creative, professional, and empathetic to her clients' preferences. She couples knowledge of materials and horticulture with spatial awareness to her project. Her questions always take me by surprise ("What is your favorite color?", after seeing our bird feeders out back, "How about a water feature out front to attract birds?" Answers to these questions find their way into her plans later.) She worked on design layout for us as well as sprinkler layout and lighting. Our landscaper worked easily with her, and was able to follow her vision to implement a beautiful, inviting entry. Hardly a day goes by that some stroller doesn't stop one of us to pay a compliment about the apron porch. The front yard has been chosen twice for Modesto's Garden of the Month award. She's the one if you want the best.

> Monica Perrone was wonderful to work with. She helped our group from start to finish in achieving our landscape goals. Monica drew out samples and explained in detail what our thoughts would look like in reality. She made knowledgeable suggestions of what types of plants would work best for our project and the reasons for these ideas. The plan even detailed the projection of long term water use needed for the area and the plants. Our project looks beautiful and we are very happy with the end result, all thanks to Monica Perrone's expertise.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What types of landscape design projects do you specialize in?**
I specialize in creating thoughtful, custom gardens and master plans for a wide range of residential properties, from intimate courtyards to expansive 50-acre sites. With 40 years of experience, I design diverse styles like contemporary, rustic modern, and traditional English/French, always tailored to your unique vision and site conditions. My goal is to enhance beauty, comfort, and function.

**Do you offer design-only services or full project coordination?**
I absolutely offer design-only services, including detailed landscape plans, planting designs, and consultations to address specific issues or develop conceptual plans. I also provide construction drawings and construction support, collaborating closely with your chosen contractors to ensure your vision is realized effectively and efficiently. My goal is to empower you with confidence.

**Do you create detailed planting and layout plans?**
Yes, creating detailed planting and layout plans is a core part of my service as a licensed Professional Landscape Architect (PLA CA 4447). I develop comprehensive landscape plans, planting designs, and site plans that integrate horticulture, spatial design, and construction feasibility to create beautiful, buildable, and sustainable outdoor spaces tailored to your needs.

**Do you design outdoor living spaces such as patios and outdoor kitchens?**
Yes, I design a variety of outdoor living spaces to enhance your home. This includes custom patios, decks, shade structures, and dining areas, as seen in projects like my 'Shaded Lounge.' I also incorporate hardscape design, masonry, concrete, and natural stone elements to create beautiful, functional, and stylish extensions of your indoor living.

**Do you design drought-tolerant or sustainable landscapes?**
Absolutely. I have experience designing drought-tolerant landscapes, especially important given California's conditions, as demonstrated in projects like 'Ridsdale Manor.' My services also include sustainable elements such as edible gardens, produce yards, and plant selection focused on appropriate resources and local conditions, ensuring your landscape is both beautiful and responsible.

## Community Q&A

**Q: where is the fountain from?** *(in Photo Questions)*

where is this fountain from?

A: Hello! This is the Del Rey Fountain's lower 48" bowl from Campania International with the pump kit. It's just the lower bowl of the two and it is filled with drain rock. This finish is no longer available but you can get close. I added an aqua light fixture and a brass nozzle. I have since added a tropical water lily too and duck weed too. It's so fun and I often specify this set up. I have encourage Campania to call this whole program the "Monica" but they haven't created this option. ;)

**Q: Where is the "after" photo?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I see two "before" photos of this project. Where are the "after" photos?

A: Hello! There is the "before" and the next one is a "during" ... Go to this link to see an "after" and some street view history c/o Google: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.6468007,-120.9950432,3a,60y,262.37h,84.87t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s7Vquv0RGKAlFvqwD3NSpGA!2e0!5s20090201T000000!7i13312!8i6656

**Q: Trees** *(in Photo Questions)*

Are the large trees in the back the Pineapple Guava? They don't look like the bluish gray leaves of this tree, but the Pinapple Guava listed as appearing the photo. Thanks for your assistance!

A: Hi! I am not familiar with these varieties. You are clearly a good student of design, so I suggest you refer to your plant notes and consider the stated expected width. Assuming you are not limited along that back fence, you could space them at nearly the maximum for a solid screen. For example, if they are projected to be 12' wide, then space them something like 9' apart. Measure from trunk to trunk and step in half the distance from the sides ... I do not know Feijoa to be fast growing, so this is also a factor in planning for your screen. Take your site plan into a local nursery and show them what you have in mind for another opinion. Best wishes!

**Q: Ideas for outdoor patio** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any tropical ideas for this room? I prefer live plants instead of artificial. All and any suggestions are welcomed!

A: I define tropical plants as those having large, architectural leaves that can also help a space to feel lush. Great "tropical" plants for pots in this space might include Sago Palm, Philodendron/Elephant Ears, Cast Iron Plant, Asparagus Fern, Variegated Spider Plant and Creeping Fig to cover the foundation bricks when it emerges from the pot. You can control the Creeping Fig at window edges with scissors. All of your pots should be at least 18" in diameter and bigger is better. Consider utilizing Jardinier Corp's reservoirs as a tidy and efficient method for watering. Fully understand this product line before selecting your pots. Keep an eye on all of your plant material so that it doesn't languish and make the space feel icky or stale. Consider moving the pots outside on a occasional mild, sunny day and give them a bath and a good soaking. You might also incorporate Citrus in this space, moving the pots indoors for the winter and treat the space like an orangerie. Of course your style direction and desires for production come into play too.

**Q: Landscaping Suggestions? Zone 9 (Northern CA)** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are willing to do a total overhaul of our yard(S) to increase drive-up appeal in the front and general interest in the back, but don't even know where to begin!

We're quite traditional and want something that softens and makes our home inviting.I prefer whites and layers of greens to give dimension with a deliberate, seasonal "pop" of color in planters.

What would you do with these spaces?

A: kelli614: John Montgomery responded beautifully and appropriately to your initial inquiry. I agree with him completely. You need a competent, caring Landscape Architect who can help you to capitalize on the positive aspects of your property and help with editing. The designer should listen to you and be able to substantiate their recommendations, leaning heavily on a sound, bias-free design process in order to downplay constraints. Working with a design professional should add value to your home and garden spaces, reduce costly mistakes, and permit you to proceed with confidence. Working with a Landscape Architect will not necessarily make the built project more expensive. The response should be very specific to you and all of the conditions. Photos are great, but it is difficult to make recommendations without a detailed interview and site visit due to the multitude of variables. Plus, more needs to be learned about your priorities and preferences.

**Q: Landscaping Advice for a California Coastal Cottage** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Huge Corner lot would love any suggestions!!

A: Your home is beautiful and there is so much potential there. It would be fun to learn about your priorities and preferences. I am located in central California and I often travel many miles from my office. I will go anywhere for the right project and I love what I do. I work on projects of every style, scope and budget. I am relatively new to houzz and I see that your last post was from July of 2013 ... Contact me if you'd like to further consider working together or if I can answer any specific questions.
