The positive part of the experience was that they are creative and have a great aesthetic, so I feel we ended up with a house that we like the look of. In retrospect, it's not worth the money they charge for project management on a monthly basis to get there. I know this now, but I was a first time homebuyer and pregnant when I hired them, so I felt I needed help. > > Working with Ward5 became very frustrating towards the end of the project. Some highlights (lowlights?) were that the owner continuously promised she would order components for our custom closets, but failed to do so in time, so we had to buy Home Depot closets in order to have our closets ready by the time we moved in (which we said early on was very important to us and had to be complete before moving in). Also, some of the work from the contractor was messy/subpar. When I pointed it all out to the owner of Ward5, who had been managing the project, she tried to convince me I was just being picky and it was "acceptable," in her words (about some of the painting, specifically, and tiling). When I told her I wanted some things redone, she asked me to deliver that message to the contractor myself...but she was supposed to be in charge of that. So about a month or so before moving in, I had to meet them both at the house - still somewhat newly postpartum and still nursing around the clock - to deliver that news myself. The contractor was great about it and fixed everything I had an issue with. > > Finally, the move in was made more stressful by Ward5 being mad that we were basically in their way. The owner assigned her daughter to do the installation and I told her the date that we were having certain closets installed. She showed up that date and was angry there were "so many people" in the house. But she was advised in advance who would be there and when. She accused us of being in her way, essentially. Then she rescheduled the installation date and asked us not to be in the house from 8 am - 4 pm, which we did, but at around 5 that day, I had to run in quickly to grab some clothes for my kids. She was very upset and had a very emotional and unprofessional reaction, even though I adhered to her timeframe. > > So, overall, I wouldn't work with them again. The decorator seemed to struggle with the 3D software, so the visual presentation didn't correspond with our actual space (all the dimensions, scale, colors, and even window placements were off). The owner, Leni, took over and was keen to provide a design that we could be excited about—and she did eventually provide us with a something that aligned with our taste—but two contractors have told us that the features we most liked about the design are impossible to build. We had also been told that they would design the kitchen with Ikea cabinetry as we requested, yet after the design was presented with non-Ikea cabinetry, the owner announced that she doesn't like Ikea (she admitted the "miscommunication"). Looking to make the front entry more inviting. A: Hi Hillary! Your house is beautiful, I love the tall entrance awning. Here are a few suggestions for what you can do to make your entrance a little more inviting. First, I think your greenery is lacking in style and intentionality; you have so much beautiful yard space that would look absolutely stunning with some wildflowers, lavender, fig trees, and so on. Its also a nice project for kids to help with, or an opportunity to pay some neighborhood kids to help. This might be something thats a little more involved, but the fact that the steps up to your door come from the side, and the front being blocked by plants is not very inviting. If you can, consider adding some steps and a path from the front door directly to the street, or have it loop back to the driveway. I also liked the other suggestions of a rain chain and some decor items. Another really out there idea is to paint the house, since the beams and front door are super dark. Since your roof is gray, you could easily paint just the house itself in a white or light gray shade, and it would create a much brighter appearance. I don't think our bathroom has been updated since it was built in the 1970s. I'd like to bring it into this century without sacrificing the beautiful wood paneling if i dont have to. Right now it feels very dark and dated. We're akso thinking of changing our kitchen countertops to a lighter color-very dark in there as well. I was wondering if we could reuse the granite and incorporate it into the design. Any ideas to make it more modern? A: I love your bathroom, but I can definitely see some potential for improvements to make it feel a little updated, without having to even rip anything out. If you were to try and remove any of the tile or paneling, you would likely damage other parts that aren't supposed to be touched. The things that I can see that could clearly use a 1-for-1 replacement are the medicine cabinet/mirror, the vanity knobs, the faucet, the vanity light, the wall art, the hardware (towel rod, etc.), and the shower curtain. I think mixing in more metals like brass, nickel, or chrome would draw the eye to the more sparkly elements in the space, and it would make the room feel brighter. Theres an incredible vintage charm about this bathroom that I think is beautiful and shouldn't be sacrificed, it just needs more metallic elements. Is it best to buy a suite of the same brand, or get from different manufacturers who are best for specific units? I've read endless reviews and that has only made me more confused on which appliances to choose. PLEASE HELP A: I agree with the previous responses! Different companies make certain appliances better than others, but nearly all of them have a range of colors and finishes that you can choose from to make sure they all look the same. Also, consider your own personal lifestyle when deciding where to splurge and save; do you cook a lot? do you have good ventilation in the kitchen? Do you use your microwave more than any other appliance? do you have a big family that could warrant a super big fridge? All of these questions can inform which appliance you want to splurge on, like getting a really fancy oven that would make Thanksgiving dinner a breeze, or a really high end range hood to make up for poor air flow. You should, however, try to buy your appliances from as few stores as possible to save yourself the logistical headache of the deliveries and potential returns. Most appliance stores wont care what brand youre buying as long as they get the sale. **Q: paint color for walls** *(in Paint)* I need a wall color that makes my furniture pop. The walls are currently painted SW Natural Choice. It's a 15'x20' room. A: Hi! Since your furniture is mostly gray and white, with blue undertones in the grays, I think a light blue or seafoam green would look beautiful. I would recommend SW 6213 Halcyon Green, its a soft but slightly darker blue green color. We need to update our exterior. We love dark colors like black but not sure they’d look good on our home style. I don’t hate the dark green siding but not opposed to changing it.
