> I have used Urban Renewal Builders for two remodels and he did an amazing job.  We were very pleased not only with his work, but his helpful ideas during the design process. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Tell me about butcher blocks.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have had it in my mind that I would get butcher block counter tops in the kitchen we are building until someone who has them told me not to. She said they are more for the look and have been inconvenient (cooking, water stains, not being able to put hot pans on). Is this always the case?

A: Hardwood butcher blocks (as in rock maple) are a different look, and somewhat convenient. However, you have to be careful of doing too much of it. The wood is very durable, and is sealed with vegetable oil to prevent liquid from absorbing. The photo attached is NOT a butcher block, it is just rustic wood. Softer wood and certainly, wood with cracks would not be suitable for cooking and prep areas. 

As for hot pots, unless it is near the char temperature of wood (which no one cooks that hot!) it shouldn't be a major problem.

**Q: Kitchen Help with Color/Granite/Cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We like the color we painted (Sherwin Williams Breaktime), but not sure it really looks good up against the warm color of the golds & creams of the St Celia granite.  We thought maybe painting just the backsplash a creamy color, but not sure?  Any suggestions for us?

A: Great color, goes with every element. You could add a tile backslash, but it could easily get over busy.

**Q: Wall of Windows** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Help! Not sure what to do with this wall of windows? Curtains? Shutters? Treatments on top and bottom? Or nothing at all? Love the sunlight but feels like room needs something

A: I don't think it needs anything, except to replace the ceiling fans with more attractive lighting. I doubt they do much for the comfort of three room, and add glare and dust catchers. My opinion only, you asked ;)

**Q: Bathroom dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Should your toilet, sink and tub always be the same color?

A: It depends largely on the design and feel of the room. Not a hard rule, but since most people use white tubs and toilets, the sink doesn't matter so much, depending on proximity.

**Q: Basement Bathroom addition?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

To all those who installed a bathroom in the basement-assuming you used one of those pulverizing ejector pits? Also how did you vent the sink/toilet?

A: Some plumbing can be vented with a AAV, but an ejector pit has to have a vent through the roof. If you don't know howbto vent, you should definitely step back and hire a plumber, it is too involved to explain here. Good luck.

**Q: Would you ask to have this replaced?** *(in Polls)*

We had this cabinet installed in our guest bathroom. The face of the remaining cabinets do not contain dark knots like this. Would you ask that it be replaced?

A: Natural wood has color variations. Although not ideal, in the second picture when you step back its not that bad.I think you look at it as a defect, and will always notice it more than guests would. I would not replace it myself.
