A: I live in the world of go big or go home! With that said, it is Big and that's exactly why I love it. Lighting is the Jewelry of house in my opinion, so dress this pretty girl up and show her off! Because at the end of the day...It's a freaking Light...Change it if you don't like it and sell the light to me, LOL! **Q: Bathroom walls: Slate, wainscoting & plaster replaced by wood panels** *(in Design Dilemma)* Contractor saying Bathroom walls need to be tile, I wanted sophisticated SEALED wood all the way To the ceiling. He said moisture will transfer from stucco outside thru wood. Is this true. Discussions \| All Questions A: It's hard to say why the contractor made that point because as many have already stated there are a plethora of wood sealers and it depends on what species your planning to use as well. Saunas and steamrooms typically use wood, so wood in high moisture areas is clearly doable, its just a matter of using the right wood with the proper moisture barrier treatment. Happy Decorating! **Q: Mid century kitchen ideas** *(in Home Decorating)* We just bought a new house with really nice flat panel cherry cabinets that I love. I’m not in love with the black granite countertops but oh well I can’t change that. I am stumped as to what type / color of backsplash tile I should use. I like the idea of penny tile as it’s a bit retro. The pictures include several colors I’m looking at. My idea with the penny tile was to have one solid background and randomly Intersperse one or two of the other colors. I’m also open to a pattern if somebody has a cool idea. The rectagular tile I really like. The multicolored one seemed to be a bit too dark. So I was planning on using the off white tile as the background and interspersing the coloref tiles to give it a bit of pop. Any advice ideas suggestions are welcome. This has been going on for months and I need to make a decision!!! A: Traditionally Mid Century colors were green, orange, yellow and blues...My question is, are you comitted to era or just want hints of it? Personally, I say go bold. During this time architecture and furniture design pushed the envelope. And even though it's a backsplash you can still add color as needed with a thoughtful backsplash design. As a desinger it's easy to go safe, but this is your home, and you know you best. Take your time with the decision. What I typically do if my client wants a colored backsplash is we paint the wall first the same hue and allow them to live with it for a week, then if they still love it move forward. I hope this helps and Happy Decorating! **Q: What to do about this backsplash!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Things have been going so smoothly on my remodel, but we’ve hit a snag. Using a very highly rated and recommended GC who uses his own guys, so this tile work was not subbed out. We researched him for months and have seen a lot of his work. This is a $150k high end remodel using very expensive and good rated glass subway tile. Also he’s already tiled a shower for me and it was fine. Just giving you the background. So the backsplash was put up yesterday and today I finally got a chance to take a good look at it in the light. There are snags, places you can see the mortar and netting, especially where the tiles meet the edges by the cabinets. Obviously we’re not going to let it go, but wondering what my options are. A) Have then rip it all out, reorder special order tile (which took a week to come in), redo it and have my contractor eat the cost, but also set us back at least another week, probably more because we’re supposed to have the range delivered and installed this week so that will have to be rescheduled (and possibly damage the brand new quartz countertops (and custom cabinets) in the process) or B) Live with it, but maybe there is a way to make it look better along the edges, like a trim piece or something, and ask for a HUGE discount. The tile alone was $2200. So my question to you guys is, what would you do? And does anyone know if there are ways to make it look better without ripping it out? My husband is pretty sure we are going to have him redo it, but I figured I’d gather some opinions. A: Sorry for your frustration. I can say, even with high end products, all pieces (even within the same lot) are not always created equally. But I can't say with 100% certainty, that this may be contractor error but possibly a flaw in the those particularly pieces of tile, especially if the rest of the area seems to be up to par. I would tend to advise, you request a discount in proportion with the sub-par areas of the backsplash, because at least from my perspective given in the photos is doesn't seem overly noticeable unless specifically pointed out. However, not to minimize your expectations if he feels this can be corrected with minimal evasiveness to the entire backsplash then go for it.
