> Matt Brewster is a brilliant designer and dedicated project manager. He spent hours to talk to my husband and I to understand our needs. He then proceeded to put that dream house into nice drawing. Over these years, he worked with us closely as the designer and project manager to handle all the heavy lifting work with the City, contractors, builders, and other necessary parties.
>
> The house was beautifully delivered to us in November 2020. What a gift! It was made of lots of wood and has many glass windows to let the light in. The Scandinavian feel of the house made it stands out uniquely in the neighbor hood. The interior set up goes so well with the Japanese ambience we try to create. It was a project combining the beauty of East and West style harmoniously. The L shape house was built around an old Oak tree and the interior design was also environmental friendly. We love the floor heat that was so comfy and energy saving.
>
> We are so grateful for Matt's vision, insights, patience and professionalism. He held high standard for the work being delivered and also maintain very well balance in listening for different opinions and being adaptable to changes. We would highly recommend Matt as the professional to make your dream house comes true!

> Matt has helped me to designed and build a house in Seattle Burien. First of all the design is great and then he has done a lot of work to ensure this project can be completed within my financial capacity. Overrun are being well controlled. He has a very personality and are adaptable to change and wait. I will definitely willing to work with him again should there be more projects in the future.

**★★★★★ — Elena Bianco, Oct. 2020**

> Matt Brewster did a great job designing the addition to our home. We had a rough design that we shared with him and he modified it to make it work within our budget. He helped advise us on applying for permits and recommended excellent people to help us get started once he design work was done.

**★★★★★ — Eric Worden, May 2020**

> Matt provided excellent design service and I will be calling on him again in the future. He provide rough designs for room additions and new exterior stairs for my rental duplex. (Ultimately I postponed this project due to my own personal planning and budget reasons). Matt listened carefully to my needs, desires, and preferences. He provided a clear written map so I understood exactly how our work together would proceed, and he followed through with it. He graciously accepted my very rough design drawings. He provided designs that exceeded my expectations in both function and attractiveness, and he was mindful of my budget at all times.

**★★★★★ — BRANDON HAUSMANN, March 2019**

> Difficult renovation project that included a new garage, and full house renovation. Discovered prior fire damage that created challenges for design.

**★★★★★ — Michael Swift, Feb. 2019**

> I hired Mathew to design a garage with apartment above, and to help me through the permitting process. His design exceeded expectations and reflected careful attention to and interpretation of my wants and needs. His knowledge of local building requirements and experience working with planning departments made the planning phase of our project a breeze. Highly recommended.

> Matthew Brewster provided and inspiring remodel design for my home. It greatly aided the completion of my home. Once the remodel was finished I was able to sell the home as a luxury remodel. I would highly recommend his services as an architect.

**★★★★★ — Lane Brinson, March 2018**

> Can't recommend Matt and Brewster design enough. Efficient, friendly and best of all very collaborative with engineering. Because of his willingness to crawl around the guts of our house with the engineer and ask smart questions in the process he saved us money on engineering fees and associated construction requirements. Great experience from start to finish.

**★★★★★ — Nate Walker, Dec. 2017**

> Matt and Adina have consulted with our church over the last year to help us make a plan for the future of our property. They are such a joy to work with. They have been encouraging and inspiring to our community, they listen well, and are creative problem solvers. They are also patient, organized, and methodical in the design process, always prepared, and have served our church with the highest level of professionalism. I also have greatly appreciated how thoughtful they have been in understanding our organization and mission. They have studied and researched broadly church architecture for us so that they would have a breadth of ideas to bring to our design process. We gladly give them our highest recommendation.

**★★★★★ — Tim Charoni, Jan. 2017**

> Matt was on point from the day I met him. I had scheduled interviews with several others, but after meeting Matt, I cancelled the remaining interviews and never looked back. I am a builder of over 30 years. I commissioned Matt to come up with a remodel design for a tired 1950 rambler. I described what I wanted, Matt asked all the important questions prior to starting the design. His conceptual sketches were spot on. I can't tell you how many compliments we have received.

**★★★★★ — sinnottlj, Nov. 2015**

> Matt Brewster has helped me with design projects dating back 15 years. He is very savvy on current trends and is a pleasure to work with. Very easy going but very hard working. He knows the codes, he knows architecture as well as any, and way better than most. His designs are innovative and creative, and his energy saving designs are of the latest technology. I recommend him and his services without reservation.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Paint Color** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the exterior paint color? Thank you.

A: Anderson white! We tried to match the Anderson windows.

**Q: What are the most energy efficient window coverings?** *(in Heating & Air Conditioning)*

We have an old house and I need a contemporary option for keeping the Vermont winter cold out

A: There's an interesting discussion related to this on a recent Fine Homebuilding post.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CIq8Is2HcH9/?utm\_source=ig\_web\_copy\_link
The consensus is maintaining original wood windows is preferable to replacement. But there are plenty of caveats.

**Q: Exterior Makeover** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all! My 2018 ranch needs some help- it’s so plain! What would you recommend to make it more visually appealing? New siding color? Cedar shingles? Corbels/trusses? Our sub is very craftsman style.

A: The outside appearance of a house is subject to infinite variation. Without knowing you, I cannot presume to tell you what it should look like. What I can do is suggest some dollar savers to help you with your own planning.

I believe that if the inside of a house fits the needs of a family, if the skin surrounding the inside is honestly and economically built, and if the business of building the house seems not to have disturbed its setting, the result can hardly escape the passerby's approval.

The passerby is important because he sees the outside of your house more often than you do. You don't really care what the outside of your house looks like. By the time you have come home three times, you hardly see it anymore; but you do care what the passerby thinks, and you want to please him.

The passerby enjoys a glimpse of a big house that looks usable. He dislikes the sight of a big house fronted with useless ornamentation. He also dislikes a little house that has spawned some useless boards in an attempt to look big.

The passerby dislikes gateposts without gates. Fences that go nowhere and keep nothing in or out. Grape arbors without grapes. Terrace coverings that obviously don't keep out the rain. Shutters that obviously cannot be closed to cover the windows along which they hang. Stone pillars that hold up nothing, and balconies with no visible supports. Doors with no footway leading to them, and tiny patches of lawn on which no one has ever trod.

**Q: Exterior virtual makeover recommendation?** *(in Building a Home)*

We just moved into a aplit foyer that's in desperate need of a facelift. We are thinking of using a virtual design service to help pull it together. We are hesitant to use the full services of an architect as we primarily will be updating facade (siding/windows/door/garage) rather than structural changes. We would however like to add a portico if possible, though the cantilevered section and 4 foot eaves may make that a challenge.
Brick &Batten is everywhere and their before/afters look great, but I've heard mixed reviews, the negatives being that you pay for one design and there is no communication. Has anyone used them? Any other companies to consider? We've already had the roof done as we needed it completed before winter.

A: The passerby enjoys a glimpse of a big house that looks useable. He dislikes the sight of a big house fronted with useless ornamentation. He also dislikes a little house that has spawned some useless boards in an attempt to look big.

**Q: What would you do?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: Here is some inspiration for the stair if you need any.

**Q: What color paint is used here?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Thanks for the question. While I wasn't involved in the paint selection on this project, my suggestion is using a paint fan and pick the color that best matches on your screen. Sorry that I cannot help any more than that.
