## Community Q&A

**Q: Describe eclectic in one word!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

It can be tricky describing a specific style in one word, but I hope you'll embrace the challenge!

What do you think best describes eclectic? Does it have positive or negative connotations for you?

A: my fave style - Personality!

**Q: Need ideas for 22' feature wall** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We need ideas for the 22foot feature wall in the great room of our lakefront home. We think the upper part is too bare/stands out too much. We prefer cleaner lines/a more modern look, even though the knee braces give a more country vibe. There is an identical wall across from it, equally bare, but not visible from most of the seating. Thanks for your help!

A: Lovely room.

I think these spaces are too high up to add anything, and don't want to take away from the stonework.

What about painting a colour that blends with stone work? it won't look as stark & will flow

**Q: Window Treatment Ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Not sure what to do with the window treatments. Should I just do a scarf and keep the blinds?

A: no scarf - a very dated look. Keep the blinds idea & leave the arch uncovered.

roman blinds in a lovely print material would look very nice

**Q: Mantle and fireplace need some help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This mantle fireplace is in our master bedroom

A: so glad you do not want to place tv over mantel. This is the spot for a lovely piece of art which reflects a soothing locale or look you & your husband can relate to.....

**Q: Above Entry Alcove** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Help! Trying to fill in this empty space that can be seen from entry below and hallway above. Any ideas?

A: a few suggestions - you could paint it & make it a feature wall, or you could find a fab piece of art to hang there - an unframed canvas or iron art.

Think BIG so it will make a statement and keep it simple.

I have included a couple of ideas, not in similar area as yours but just to give you idea of impact the right piece can make.....

**Q: Starting from scratch** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, there, I'm moving into an 850 sq. ft. one bedroom condo in a year's time. It's a new condo, so all I have right now is a layout drawing. I am intending to bring almost nothing from my current rental place to my new place (save for one persian rug and two arm chairs I'm going to reupholster). I am trying to come up with a plan for decor, etc., so I can assemble a few pieces from now until I love in. Is there anything I'm "safe" to pick up in the interim or would you recommend to wait until I'm in the space? Are there any foundation pieces that I should think about to help orient my decor choices? I feel like I need a plan so that I don't end up with things I'll regret but I don't really know where to start. Any advice?

A: Sounds like you have lots of time to dream & plan. Start with idea boards based on styles, colours you like

If you go to Ideabooks on this site, you can get lots of inspiration.

I would not recommend you start buying until closer to move in date, and pace yourself.

There are always sales. Unless you come across a particular piece you fall in love with, then go for it!!

I have an iron coffee table I fell in luv with over 15 years ago and it remains one of my fave pieces which I am keeping as we downsize. Same for soft, cocoa brown leather sofa & ottoman, which have just passed onto my niece.

Browse online & in stores & determine what your style is - what type of furniture do you prefer? what colours make you happy?

Buy quality from higher end stores when they have sales and your pieces will last & not go out of style.
