I decided since I was replacing the flooring in the bathroom, this would be a good time to replace the bathtub/shower tile and install a wainscot. Ray assured me upfront they could do the tile work in the bath/shower and wall as well as the flooring. > > If I was rating FLF on just the flooring work, I would give them 4 stars and I would recommend them for that. The floors look great (see attached floor image). What wasn’t so great was the communication - I had no idea what was happening from day to day, who was coming, when to expect them, etc. Also, the crew didn't do a great job of cleanup, as well as leaving several noticeable nicks and scrapes on my walls - in prominent places - that the workers didn't acknowledge or offer to repair (see attached image). I should have raised these to Ray's attention earlier when I noticed them on my own but I was more concerned with them finishing up the work - I can patch a few nicks in the wall myself. Still, they could be more careful and/or cognizant to report any damage they cause. To Ray’s credit, he did offer to have it fixed or take off $100 of my bill. I opted for the latter. > > As I said, the flooring looked great, but I am knocking another star off because of the tile job in my bath/shower area and wainscot. > > It ended up looking like a DIY job. > > I initially raised concerns over how they installed the corners - the tiles looked misaligned and left a large diamond shaped gap that when grouted (which other pros here on Houzz told me should have been caulked instead of grouted) looked like black, misshapen diamonds. (See attached BEFORE image). Ray attributed this to my choice of beveled tiles, but I connected with other Houzz pros in the forum who told me it looked that way because they didn't miter the ends of the tiles in the corners before installing. > > When I raised the concern to Ray, he offered to tear it all out and start over - without charging me extra - but we compromised on just tearing out the corners and they would miter the edges. > > The end result looked better - but still not great. The tiles still weren't fully matching up with one another, causing the corner line to be crooked. Caulking does little to hide that. (See AFTER image) The grout job was also messy (post-cleanup) and the tiled inset niche was missing grout in several places. Ray re-grouted the niche, but I ended up going over ever tile with a razor blade scratching off the excess grout that bled onto the tile (and I found a couple of tiles near the ceiling that are missing grout - guess I’ll be caulking those). > > When he came out the last day to do a couple of final items, I showed him the "corrected" job his crew did in the bathroom. I said "It kinda seems like this isn't something your crew does often." > > HIs response was "Oh...never." > > I found that response unsettling and I told him if I he had admitted to me up front that this isn't something they have experience with, I would have just had them do the floors and would have hired someone else to do the tub/wall tile work. My suggestion to FLF is if it's not your forte, own that and tell potential clients. Don't project confidence in your ability to do it because you're setting yourself up for failure in the eyes of your clients. > > Some may say, "don't hire a flooring company to do bath/wall work" and in hindsight I agree, however as I said before, Ray assured me upfront they could do the tile work in the bath/shower and wall. > > I will give credit that FLF did at least make efforts to try to correct the situation, but in the end it just seems like this part was too outside their wheelhouse. > > Would I recommend FLF or hire them again to do flooring work? They are respectful, hard working, on time, inexpensive, and they did everything beautifully. The owner even went out of his way for me by helping with things that would speed up the installation process. He picked up parts for my shower plumbing and helped identify and build out a section of my shower that wasn't done correctly by my contractor. I can't even explain what a great feeling it is to get a good price and excellent service during the difficulties of an extensive remodel/addition.
