## Community Q&A

**Q: We enjoy using stand alone tubs in our designs, do you?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: I like my Shutters behind the stand alone tub.

**Q: Need some window covering advice...** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just wondering what to do with this window to make it look less plain. I'm not looking for privacy, just decorative. If I do curtains in not sure where to hang them from and whether to go all the way to the walls. It's 116 inches to the top of the window and 140 inches to the ceiling. I was also thinking of doing a faux roman blind. Thoughts??

A: ...or in a stain finish to match the floor..

**Q: My living room is a tad too stark! Suggestions?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Artwork layout, window treatments, lamp shade, and whatever else you can suggest to help make this room look finished yet still simple and not cluttered. More details below.

Thanks in advance for your input!

\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*

I need help figuring out how much and what size art to put on these walls: Do I put just one large piece over the fireplace? Two large pieces over each sofa - if I did this would the fireplace look strange with nothing over it? I have been attracted to large black and white photos (48 x 48 and bigger). Will this make the space too stark? Where else in the room should anything be hung if at all? I'm not into grouping of small pieces. Too fussy for me and I like the POW! of big artwork.

(The gold mirror is new and we are keeping it above the chest - great for putting on makeup before running out the door. We love the curved wall opposite the fireplace and like having it blank so we can just enjoy the architecture of it.)

Also, I am stuck in my never ending dilemma about window treatments. I don't want long panels because they will cover up the trim which we love so much and there are strange duct work bump outs that make it hard to hang. I'm not in love with the contemporary look of romans. I love something subtle, but do I need a little extra pizazz of sort in this room? Linen roller blinds with some nice trim on the edge?

And, I need help with lamp shade suggestions for the chest. The one on there is temporary. Should I do black? Rectangular?

We like to keep a place semi-minimal because my husband has terrible dust allergies so no large rugs and not little odds and ends that need to be dusted.

Here is some info about the room:

1\. We exercise, watch nightly tv, visit with friends, use the chest as a landing strip and shoe storage and play with our dog in this room. We love it and it gets a lot of use.

2\. We love the floors, ceiling molding, and curved wall and like to not have the room too busy looking because we don't want to draw the eye from those beautiful features.

3\. We hired a great designer to select the colors and are not repainting. We love it.

4\. We are having a great mid-century Baker sofa upholstered in black to go where the current crappy sofa is in the back of the room.

A: Some Custom Interior Plantation Shutters in a stain finish will help warm the room...

**Q: Dress My Window!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm not really sure which direction to go in with my rod for drapes. Should I do one long rod under the crown moulding all the way across or should it be 3 separate rods? I obviously want the drapes to hit the floor and I'm thinking I want the panels to fall in between the empty wall sections. Help! Thoughts?

The trim around the windows really enhances the Shutters.
I wouldn't cover that trim, its really nice.
Shutters give an uncluttered, simple look to your windows. Shutters will outlive many other window treatments and will stay in style for ever. You may grow tired of a specific pattern on a roman shade or fabric treatment, but shutters always remain in vogue.

**Q: Need help with garage door colors--getting new one installed** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Should we match the color of trim / new windows which are almond? or something else? you don't see too much siding from the street at all...

A: ShutterShack.com Garage Door Accents can be installed on any standard aluminum garage to enhance your homes curb appeal.

**Q: Our new home!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Just about to take possession of my new place. Suck at designing or decorations. I'd love any suggestions for our main room here. We need to fit our family room a desk and a kitchen table. Any ideas will be appreciated!
