> Agnes did a fantastic job with the renovations of my house. She was on top of all decisions including the coordination of all fabric colors and patterns, furniture, and appliances. Her kitchen and bath suggestions really pulled everything together and the final results were spectacular. She is wonderful to work with and I could not be more pleased with how everything turned out. I would recommend Agnes to anyone who would like to experience the way things should be done to get the expected results. I plan to use her knowledge and expertise with all work remaining in my house. She is great.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Need help with entrances into DR, FR, kitchen in new home!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are trying to decide how to deal with the large, open entrances to our family room from the main hall, dining room from the main hall, and division between the kitchen and family room. The builder has used arches, post, and trim. We are inclined to use just the trim as our front door will not have a curve and there are no other curves in the transitional/craftsman home. Our furniture is more modern as well.

A: You could add a painted wood paneled pediment across all your arched sheetrock openings. I would also panel the sheet rock half walls that the columns sit on with painted wainscoting. Your home is well designed from what I can see, but I don't think the arched sheetrock is as good a look as a straight across pediment.

**Q: Updating a master bath on a budget** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I planning to update my 80's master bath. The biggest challenge is that the pink tile in the shower and around the tub must stay, so I'm looking for a color scheme where this shade is an accent color. I would initially like to change the wall color, window treatment, cabinets, the counter, the mirrors, and lighting. The flooring will come last (and probably not this year). What do you suggest?

A: There is a rosa allacante marble with gray & white veining that may go with your pink tile. There are also several grayish granites at $35 sf such as Kashmir White that could work. You could use it on the counters with white undermount sinks. I would paint the cabinets gray. You may be able to add small beveled mirrored tiles as an edge treatment to your mirror panels (just glue on the edge) or white painted wood trim, and you can find very affordable chrome sconces with glass shades to replace the dated ones. Add ceramic 4x4 either gray or white tiles to create a tub backsplash and top with matching tile chair rail. Remove the wallpaper border and paint the wall with a gray that's several shades darker than the cabinets. Replace the existing valance with a white Roman shade. Add new chrome 6" pulls. An inexpensive oriental style rug and artwork with the right colors will add finishing touches.

**Q: Kitchen cabinets and backsplash** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi Everyone,
Our kitchen in the new home is not exactly the color combination we wanted. We are looking to refinish and paint/stain the cabinets, put in a back-splash and if needed paint the walls.Changing the granite counter-top and the cabinets would be out of question because of the $$$. I am losing my mind trying to figure out what color the cabinets should be stained to match the grey brown granite. I want to avoid lighter shades due to maintenance issues.

Also I couldn't find any model kitchen with that colored granite so I'm unable to visualize the end result.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

A: Because these are prefinished cabinets, I would paint them with a gray paint mixed with glazing compound. The new finish may go well with the existing walls, and you can decide then whether to paint the walls too.

**Q: move front door location and change front of house design** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'd like to change my entrance so it's not in front of my fireplace. Would like to move door and change design with porch. We love to be out front to hang with our dog and neighbors. Live one block from ocean, so beach style or craft style would be great!

A: I would use a combination of wood (Hardie board planks prestained, or Hardieboard shingles) along with a stone veneer. With it's simple ranch style shape, the home needs better definition which the contrasting textures can add. Plus both types of siding are maintenance free.

**Q: Huge empty wall** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any idea what we can add to our wall next to our bed? The tv will be moved on a custom built stand that will square off the slant in the floor. I'm going for glamorous/romantic. We will eventually get a new bedspread and window treatments. What can we add to the huge empty wall? Mirror?

A: El Dorado has a stone veneer wall that is smooth and a light beige color called pearl that looks great when creating lighted niches, an antiqued mirror niche, etc. It will protrude about 3" into the room, but you can cut into the sheetrock to get deeper niches if you want. I wouldn't keep the matching bedside tables and small lights with such a large bed - place a vertical bedside chest (perhaps painted black or red lacquer) on the window side and do an asymmetrical look. Lighting can be done with sconces on the wall over the bed that are a nice size, perhaps with elongated tails in black wrought iron. You can add black framed photos collection over the bed similar to what you have. I would also add a burst of color with a long neckroll pillow. Your room is very small, so going for a romantic, cozy "cave" effect could work.

**Q: Need help to decorate this hunter green bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This is my kid's bath that I would like to gut someday, but just not in the cards now! I have to live with the hunter green wall tile and floor for a while longer. My kids are 13 (boy) and 7 (girl), so it can't be too "cutsy". I need some suggestions on decorating and design. I was thinking of incorporating some sort of animal print, but I don't know where to start? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

A: I think you would be pleasantly surprised at the difference that adding a white tile chair rail to the top of the wall tile would make. I would also frame your mirror in with the same chair rail tile or get a new mirror - the mirrors with a mirrored frame are popular. Replace the dated sconce with a chrome fixture with shaded bulbs. Also painting the vanity white and replacing the counter top with a white molded marble top - NO swirls, all white so it looks like porcelain with an integrated sink - very inexpensive yet looks good. Also of course new faucet and cabinet hardware. Since your drawers are slab front, you could use a large cup pull, but definitely an oversize pull (5-6", not 3"), no knobs. Walls semi-gloss white - add brightly colored oil or acrylic paintings - many don't need framing and you may want to do one large and then a collection of 4 small on another wall.
