> I have had the pleasure of working with LaidLaw Schultz on several home projects, and I am continually impressed by their expertise and attention to detail. The architects at LaidLaw Schultz are able to create designs that seamlessly blend functionality and aesthetics.

Sehr gute Nachschlagewerke. Siehe Fotos.

> "My first experience with Laidlaw Schultz was building an extensive 4 year custom home. I was the general contractor on the residence and I found their design, drawings, and specifications to be the most well thought out and detailed to date in my 20+ years in the construction industry. They are always the first firm I recommend to any prospective clients, and they are whom I turned when remodeling my own Midcentury home that was in need of restoration and updating. Their work on this small historically significant Edward Killingsworth was as well considered as the larger projects we’ve worked on together and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.
> In short - I always jump at the chance to work with Craig Schultz and his team, be it my own home or their larger residences."

**Comment from Laidlaw Schultz architects:**

> Thanks for the kind review - looking forward to the start of our next project.

> I am a Landscape Architect who has had the opportunity, privilege and pleasure to work with Laidlaw Schultz on many projects for more than 20 years. I love collaborating with them. Their projects always have a strong design program, philosophy and clear objectives. This results in the architecture, interior and exterior all going in the same direction. I cannot say enough about their talent, style, detail and what a pleasure it is to be on the design team with them. I would highly recommend Laidlaw Schultz to anyone who is remodeling or proposing new construction. You will enjoy and be very impressed with the process and the results.

**Comment from Laidlaw Schultz architects:**

> Thanks Dale - it's great having you as part of the team.

> A pity that 5 stars is the highest rating. Certainly I can add one to make it 6! You get the point. Excellence describes Laidlaw Schultz Architects. Not your everyday excellence, but a true combination of depth, talent, practical experience with an uncanny ability to combine detail, style, nuance, and the abstract in a way that is not easily described.

> Craig Schultz is my go-to guy. He is an skilled listener who is able to envision what we want far better than we can articulate, and he patiently works to ensure that what we want is met and more often exceeded. And Craig does so with a clear understanding of our cost and time constraints. We cannot be happier with his results.

> We have enjoyed the work of Laidlaw Schultz architects for years and we were

> with Craig and Kathy and it was through their patience, guidance, and
> creativity that we were able to transform our residence into something that
> reflects not only the way we live but how we always wanted to live - a
> sophisticated backdrop for our lives. I was amazed that through a few
> exacting moves, thoughtful material selection, and an attention to detailing
> that we were able to change our residence in such a meaningful way. It's
> been a pleasure working with them both over these past years and we are
> looking forward to the upcoming phase II.

> WE HAVE BEEN IN OUR HOME FOR 6 YEARS.... WE STILL LOVE EVERY ASPECT OF OUR HOME AND GIVE MOST OF THE CREDIT TO LAIDLAW SCHULTZ ARCHITECTS! FROM THE DESIGN TO THE MATERIALS BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE .... PERFECTION!
> IT IS AN "ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN" HOME!!
> I PERSONALLY LIKED HOW SCOTT LAIDLAW AND CRAIG SCHULTZ WERE ABLE TO LISTEN TO US AND THEN CULTIVATE BOTH OF OUR IDEAS (AND SOMETIMES DIFFERENT IDEAS) TOGETHER TO DESIGN A HOME THAT FITS OUR NEEDS, OUR TASTES AND OUR LIFESTYLE.
> WE WERE VERY HAPPY WITH LAIDLAW SCHULTZ ARCHITECTS.

**Comment from Laidlaw Schultz architects:**

> Thank you so much for the kind words - it was such great fun working with you both. What a great collaboration.

> We hired the firm of Laidlaw Schultz to design our new home in Laguna Beach. Craig Schultz and Scott Laidlaw far surpassed our expectations. Craig transformed the dated home we had purchased into a true piece of art. He combined natural materials including stone, copper, steel, glass and wood to create a beautiful modern structure that compliments the natural beauty of the coastline.
> Laidlaw and Schultz was extremely easy and flexible to work with, making the entire process enjoyable. Craig and Scott were intricately involved during every step including planning, permits, design, and construction supervision.
> Craig's vision and attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of the home. Craig incorporated all our wishes and needs and melded them seamlessly into the home's design. As a result, Laidlaw Schultz created our dream home and we couldn't be happier and or pleased!

**Comment from Laidlaw Schultz architects:**

> Thank you so much for the kind review, it was great fun working with you both and we couldn't be more pleased with the results of our collaboration.

**★★★★★ — brhcdm, Nov. 2015**

> Almost 10 years after buying an older midcentury ranch on a spectacular lot, we decided to rebuild in a manner that emphasized the site but also respected the scale and privacy of the one story modern homes around us in Harbor View Hills. We studied the work of many architects and eventually were referred to Laidlaw Schultz by one of the top design firms in L.A. We immediately hit it off with Craig Schultz—his artistic vision, attention to detail and thoughtful solutions to challenging situations gave us confidence that he could be our architect.
>
> To sum it up, Craig’s design for our new home exceeded all our expectations. His plans were exacting and easy for the contractors to bid. Craig and his colleague Kathy Troutfetter are very smart, funny and easy to work with. The final “product” achieved the indoor/outdoor feel and an emphasis on the view that are hallmarks of timeless midcentury architecture. Almost 14 years after the house was completed, people who see the house think it’s brand new. Everyone who sees it wants to either buy the house or meet our architect.
>
> We’re always happy to introduce them to Laidlaw Schultz, but the house isn’t for sale. We love it!

**Comment from Laidlaw Schultz architects:**

> Thank you so much for the kind review - that meant a lot.

**★★★★★ — User, Nov. 2015**

> If only there were more architects like Craig and Scott, problem solvers with receptive ears! Too often architects are celebrated for the refinement of their singular style, forcing a client's needs through the filter of their own aesthetic agenda. Study the portfolio of Laidlaw Schultz and you will find a variety of beautifully imagined works, each one reflecting the needs and personalities of their owner occupants. Whether you are planning to renovate a surf shack, establish your headquarters or build a pool house in the mountains, expect a highly functional plan with sophisticated detailing. And don't be surprised if you consider them friends when it's all said and done.

> Having seen their work, we knew our Pacific Modern remodel would be best served by Laidlaw/Shultz Architects; always unique, never fussy or contrived. After interviewing & sharing some overview design concepts, we began. Never did they compromise the character of the house, the integrity of the design or our desired nuances. The cohesive feeling of free, fresh & flow are adjectives many have used. Visitors who didn't think they liked "Modern" were surprised by the homes overall feeling of warmth, balance of elements in chosen materials.
> An int'l real estate broker recently said, "Do you know HOW many houses I've seen? Do you know how many I could move into without changing them? This is the first!"
> Building was a lifetime dream for us. LSA patiently worked in a collaborative way, remained professional on all levels without ever being dismissive. Happy to listen happy to guide, helping us through the rough patches. As my conservative husband says, "Sometimes a project is worth it - this was one of those."
> To come through an extensive remodel & loving every detail years later is our dream come true.
> I do not know how to attach photos, but many people have told me they've seen our home on your site.

  - Description: Set in a remote district just outside Halfway, Oregon, this working ranch required a water reserve for fire fighting for the newly constructed ranch house. This pragmatic requirement was the catalyst for the unique design approach — having the water reserve serve a dual purpose: fitness and firefighting. Borrowing from the surrounding landscape, two masses — one gabled mass and one shed form — are skewed to each other, recalling the layered hills that surround the home. Internally, the two masse…

## Community Q&A

**Q: what is the name and colour of the decorative pebbles/pea gravel?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Wondering about the colour and brand thank you!

A: This projects was a few years back and unfortunately I do no recall. Wish I could be of more help. Best of luck on your project.

**Q: Wall Material** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you tell me what the walls are made of? I notice there is no molding and a crease has been added towards the bottom of the wall. What is the purpose of the crease?

A: The upper portion of the wall (above the reveal) is painted gypsum board. Below the reveal is painted MDF. The purpose of changing to MDF below the reveal is two fold: 1. it offers a wearable base (picture the vacuum cleaner banging into the wall, 2. And the second purpose of having a base is to allow for the hardwood flooring to expand and contract.

**Q: love the bed with built in side tables who makes it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This was an historical piece the client owned so I'm not certain who the manufacturer was. Sorry I couldn't help more.

**Q: What kind of stone is it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What kind of stone does the facade's wall have?

A: This is striated carrera marble. Good luck on your project.

**Q: Design** *(in Photo Questions)*

Gorgeous floors and ceilings.

A: Thank you so much for your kind words - this was a fun project to work on It's always interesting balancing our vision against the original architect and finding a response that respects the original while still allowing us a voice.

**Q: are the stepping stones cast or ready-made?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Been looking for rectangular shapes and are very hard to find.
Thanks.

A: Those are actually cast in place - but you might check with Stepstone Incorporated. I believe they have several rectangular pavers available. Best of luck on your project.
