I truly love the different rooms he designed for us, and over time, we've gotten so many many compliments on the rooms from friends and family. What's best, I feel his designs remained true to who we are and make us truly feel at home. I also know, that on my own, I would have never come up with these concepts or found the amazing pieces he helped us procure. In our family room he had the idea of using reclaimed wood on an accent wall to tie the room together - this makes it so much cozier and at the same time is an elegant highlight. In our main living room, he suggested furniture with upholstery and throw pillows which tie seamlessly with the area rug without being too "matchy-matchy" and even mesh well with the artwork in the room- creating a stunning overall look. Finally, he persevered in giving us many great options for the dining room where we had a harder time deciding what we really wanted. We wouldn't have such a beautifully designed house without him! We did have issues with the contractor initially as they were unsure about which color grout and the tile orientation. I got a bit frustrated as I did not understand how these went together. I did shortly after connect Pierre with the contractor. After they reviewed the plans and had a 30-minute meeting everything was resolved. I really did not want to be as involved as I was, however it was quite a relief after they reconnected to resolve the issues. I don’t think that I could have come up with such a pleasant design on my own. The tile was extraordinary in both bathrooms and worked well with all of the corresponding wall colors. We let him know this and thought it would be an issue as we understand that to design and receive furniture takes at least a few weeks. Pierre completed the selections within 9 days and was able to get our major sofas and chairs expedited in about 4 weeks preceding the design completion. Although this was a few days more than our deadline, it was worthwhile. We were surprised that the delivery gentlemen set everything as well up for us which was quite a relief. The final art and other items took about 3 more weeks to arrive before the final setup. We purchased a new home in the fall of 2015. I returned from my 6th deployment in Nov 2015 and was not yet assigned to the D.C. area and had to commute between Fort Drum, NY and Woodbridge, VA. As such, I needed assistance in furnishing and interior design for our home. I found this company on the web and after researching others in the area and meeting with Pierre, decided that this would be the best business to go with for our needs. The first meeting with Pierre was great! He seemed very knowledgeable and experienced in this arena. He explained the process and was very responsive in the beginning with providing the design options for us to choose from within the first couple of weeks of contact. I reviewed the contract he provided us, signed the agreement and everything went downhill from the moment he collected the 90% deposit from us. The project(s) in our home totaled just over $30,000.00. So for this amount of money with 90% of it received up front, I expected great customer service and communication. None of which occurred. He became very difficult to get in contact with and would not provide definitive answers on the status of our project on whether or not everything had been placed on order. I contracted with him in Dec 2015 and by Jan after I'd given him the deposit, he became scarce. We were able to finalize some outlying details for a couple of the rooms by Feb 2016 and proceeded to wait for months afterwards for the furnishings to arrive - which for the most part is not abnormal. But when we were almost a year down the road and still hadn't received much of anything other than lamps, contact paper, and pillows - soft furnishings and none of the furniture, we became very concerned. Everytime I inquired about these items, his assistant would respond with a long laundry list of excuses as to why the items weren't ready for delivery or in the warehouse yet. We were over charged for many things that we ordered - some items we were grossly overcharged for. Also, somehow it was our responsibility to spend additional money on top of what we were spending with this design company to find subcontractors to install anything that needed installing or painting. Case in point, we agreed on wallpaper and had it ordered. I contracted with a company to install it. The owner of this company has been installing wallpaper since before I was born in the early 70s. They opened up a roll and discovered that it was contact paper - not wallpaper and told me that normally they do not hang any type of contact paper - only wall paper. They agreed to install it because they were already contracted to install actual wallpaper on my dining room walls and sitting room ceiling which I'd purchased on my own - not through any other design company. There was an issue with the measurements of our basement wall which has 11ft ceilings. The contractor informed me that we were one roll short. I immediately called Pierre's company and emailed him, but got no response - it was a Saturday and the office is closed on weekends. So I decided to see if I could quickly find another roll somehow and researched the label on the internet. I found the paper on amazon.com for about $25/roll. Pierre charged us $500.00 for this wallpaper. After this discovery, I began to question just about everything we were receiving - was it custom or not? We ordered custom bedding for our daughter's bedroom which we were charged about $400.00 for. What was delivered was bedding from IKEA. We received a white fitted sheet, flat sheet and duvet insert. > > EVERY interior designer is responsible not just to assist in the selection of the purchase of wall coverings , furniture, etc. They are also supposed to have furniture placed, any wall coverings installed, and to monitor the progress of the project. Interior design agreements are supposed to be essentially turn-key agreements. The interior designer has no right to delegate to the homeowner retaining sub-contractors, installers, and/or repairing light fixtures that are defective. Any defective product is solely in the hands of the interior designer. > > The phase II - procurement section of Pierre Jean-Baptiste Interiors agreement states that they do not typically order from retail merchants, all retail prices will be billed to the client at approximately 25%-35% above the designer's discounted cost if any. Yet, it appears that much of the furniture and furnishings we purchased were retail purchases and for example, IKEA does not give a discount so why would we be required to pay 25%-35% above the retail cost? It's like buying gas - is it $3, 4 or 5.00? You don't go to the pump and the price is $3-5 for regular unleaded. You know how much you are paying. So it's the same with any commission or mark up. It should be a set rate and the client should be informed clearly what it is. The agreement we signed is illegal because it is vague in that you cannot have a commission price that is a variable of 25%-35%. > > There also is never a need for a 90% initial deposit. It is always 25%-50% with the balance paid before delivery. Phase III of the agreement we signed for project install and completion states that they will help coordinate the schedule for delivery and installation of the work, make periodic visits to the job site to ensure that the work is progressing according to the applicable specifications, etc. The company gets off the hook by putting in language that they may provide a referral or contractors and installers, but he is required to determine whether the work is proceeding in conformity with Pierre Jean-Baptiste concepts/standards. This basically means that the interior designer says that installation costs are the responsibility of the client and he may, if he feels like it, watch what is being done. > > We will never know where the figures came from for everything we purchased. I have requested the vendor invoices which should be made available to the client and have not received anything. We don't know if the bill for the items include his commission mark-up or if it's the retail or wholesale price? > > Every consumer should beware of this company and others like it. You don't know what you don't know and it's best to have an attorney review any agreement before signing it. One that's well versed in interior design law - which from what I've found can be difficult. This was a great learning experience and so now we know what to look for if we ever decide to use an interior designer again. **Comment from Pierre Jean-Baptiste Interiors:** > We truly apologize for your experience. We sent you an email back in November 2017 after we completed your project, and we did not hear back. The only thing from Ikea that we purchased on you project was the bedding for the pint sized Ikea bed that you purchased for your daughter per your request. normal vendors and retailers do not offer as this was a special sized bed. We never even collected the final balance after providing you with as many credits as we could. We completed you project within 6 months which was typical for the scale and number of custom items required to complete the project. We completed a full layout and a project budget which all required approval prior to receiving your deposit. Should you want further resolution please reach out to us so we can work together. About five months later we were granted two completed rooms that we use daily. The upside was the finished design and the concept that we were able to see prior to completion. He comes across very professional initially and then it goes down hill from there. A classic case of over promising and under delivering. It is clear that with our project he lacked the passion, desire to see it through to completion. I have never been so displeased with a designer.We contacted Pierre at the end of June 2014 to design 3 rooms in our home. I was initially impressed that he was able to come to our house the day we called. After a couple days we decided to move forward with him - a few things we liked were that he had very bold designs, his prices were pretty comparable to others, however we appreciated that he charged a flat fee per room for his services, and he was very responsive to our calls/emails. He returned the day after we decided to move forward, he took measurements and collected his service fee. I sent him an email the same day which provided him with our budget.Design phase: Pierre provided us a design plan for 2 of the 3 rooms we requested, however the plans were incomplete and DOUBLE the budget we had allocated for 3 spaces. He response was that he did not see our budget until after he started the design plan and he made the decision himself to leave out the 3rd space due to budget constraints. Our preference would have been for him to contact us immediately so we can determine how to move forward. We decided we would move forward with one room, given the cost for 2 rooms was extremely high. We wanted to meet with him to discuss the changes in the design plan, however, he preferred we walk through it over the phone. Now his main concern was that we were too far away for him to make trips to our house. At this point it would typically take him a week to respond to an email and it was not uncommon for texts and phone calls to go unreturned. It ultimately took over 2 months to finalize the design plan.Billing: Pierre provided us with an invoice that had several errors. We walked through it over the phone and once he was able to make the changes and send us the final invoice we did not see where he subtracted the cost for the 2 rooms that we were no longer doing. His response was that he already started the design for one room and whenever we were ready to proceed we could call him to move forward. In translation, we were stuck with paying him for services we did not receive. Not to mention the fact that he retained possession of the designs, he only showed us the designs once. So we have nothing to show for rooms 2 and 3. At this point we were stuck and our only way to move forward was paying him for the furniture so that he could place the orders or walk away and loose the money we had already paid for his services. We choose to move forward. This was the first week in September.Installation: we did not here from Pierre again until the 2nd week in October when he emailed to set up time for furniture delivery, although I sent a few emails to inquire about the status (they were not returned). We confirmed a delivery date, however, he had an emergency and could not make it. We found out when his contractor showed up to our house an our late on the date scheduled. We then saw that Pierre sent an email 30min prior to let us know that he would not make it but his contractor would. His contractor began the install but then we noticed, the rug was not the one we chose and the chandelier was missing. We emailed and text Pierre....and no response. He did not call to follow up to see how the install turned out, if we were pleased with his selections....nothing. Typically you would expect an interior designer to arrange the pieces that were selected or generally show concern for whether or not his vision was executed as planned - not Pierre. Follow up install: We spoke with Pierre and expressed our concerns. He stated our project was so small that it did not require him to be as involved and he had larger clients to focus on. We set a date for him to come out and look at the space (he had not been to see it once since he received payment) and provide us with the color selections for our main floor, as agreed. HE DID NOT SHOW UP, CALL OR EMAIL. WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM AT ALL.
