Honored with the AIA National Firm Award for 2015, Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects (EYRC) is a versatile practice that has earned an international reputation for design excellence and an exemplary professional culture. Founded in 1979 as a tiny residential studio, the Los Angeles-based firm is a 40 member team where modern, residential design is core to our practice. Focusing on the design of new, single family residences, EYRC works closely with clients to develop their vision, consistently paying attention to the particularities of people and place.

The residential studio is led by Founding Partner Steven Ehrlich, and Residential Studio Director + Lead Designer Takashi Yanai. Steven and Takashi see each project as a unique challenge, and come to each project with an almost anthropological approach.

Several of our most noteworthy residential projects include the 700 Palms Residence, the McElroy Residence, and the Carrillo Residence (all located on the California coast). EYRC has also designed homes in places like Texas, New York, Dubai.

EYRC has been recognized with eight other national AIA awards, the California Firm of the Year in 2003, and more than 150 other design honors.

  - Location: Santa Monica, CA

  - Description: He wanted a great yard, she wanted a great room. They both desired a home with a strong beating heart for themselves and their two teen-age children. This modern family practices togetherness, not hanging out in separate rooms. The architects’ assignment was to design an appealing centralized habitat for all members of the household to use and enjoy. The design solution is one big indoor-outdoor space. An L-shaped living-dining area on the main floor has the kitchen as its pivot point. Floor-to-…
- [Stradella](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/stradella-pj-vj~6113706)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: The Owner grew up in this existing 1969 one-story house and imagined the remodeling of the home and the addition of a second floor as a project she wanted to undertake with her elderly parents. The main design intent was to add some space but more importantly to graciously connect the interiors to the outdoors and the expansive canyon views. The new design kept the original footprint for the ground floor, but dramatically changed the layout of the existing spaces. The main floor now consists of…

- [Carrillo Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/carrillo-residence-pj-vj~5844)
  - Location: Pacific Palisades, CA
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: The Carrillo Residence occupies a long narrow site on the rim of Santa Monica Canyon with distant views of the Pacific Ocean. Designed for a young couple with two children, the house addresses the formal and informal needs of the family while taking advantage of the Southern California climate and views. The orientation of the house reinforces the geometry of the site. A series of stone masses define the ground floor program while a pristine floating white box houses the bedroom wings and slides…
- [Crescent Drive Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/crescent-drive-residence-pj-vj~2609198)
  - Location: Beverly Hills, CA
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: Light, simplicity and materiality were the guiding design elements for this modest 3,000 square foot residence. Respectful to a neighborhood mainly consisting of Spanish-styled homes from the 1940s, scale and mass were kept comparable. Materials traditionally used in Spanish houses were incorporated - all but with a modern twist; a straightforward composition of stucco, concrete and wood produced both a contemporary and warm respite in this urban setting. In the main living area, bold floor-to-ce…
- [Blue Sail Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/blue-sail-residence-pj-vj~2045407)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The Blue Sail Residence was an extensive renovation completed for a single owner. The layout was re-planned and the house was opened up to take advantage of the incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. The square footage of the house stayed the same, but public spaces such as the living, dining, study and kitchen were combined into one common space that is framed by a 9’6” high and 40’ wide opening that pockets away completely, revealing uninterrupted views of the ocean. The simple material palett…
- [McElroy Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mcelroy-residence-pj-vj~758155)
  - Location: Laguna Beach, CA
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Nested at the end of a cul-de-sac in a private southern California beach community, this house occupies a site with spectacular vistas of the Pacific Ocean. The compound is entered along a fifty-foot long sustainable-growth hardwood (ipe) wall. The house is an expansive series of spaces underneath a giant floating horizontal plane which is supported on stone masses, wood walls, and slender steel columns. Oversized sliding glass doors pocket completely away to dissolve the physical boundaries bet…
- [Spring Road](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/spring-road-pj-vj~5534288)
  - Location: Ross, CA
  - Photos: 37
  - Description: A successful entrepreneur and avid lover of design searched for years for land in Marin County on which to build and extraordinary home. When he found this heavily wooded hilltop properly with 270-degree views of Mt. Tamalpais and San Francisco Bay, it was worth the wait. The site is surrounded by California oaks and old-growth redwoods, offering total privacy. A redwood-lined driveway ascends to the house, where the architecture serves as backdrop and frame to the idyllic setting, a tranquil re…
- [Coldwater Canyon Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/coldwater-canyon-residence-pj-vj~2557448)
  - Location: Beverly Hills, CA
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: The site is a deep, narrow, one-acre hillside property in Beverly Hills. The owners’ desires were to create an oasis that focused more on a sense of privacy and introspection rather than maximizing views or presenting an extroverted face to the neighborhood. In addition, the hillside site presented a number of significant technical challenges in terms of setbacks and maximum building envelope. The design solution was to organize the house and compound as a long attenuated experience that afforde…
- [Wolfe Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/wolfe-residence-pj-vj~101664)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: This 3,400 sf residence for an African Art Dealer/Collector and big game hunter and his family is a rusting Cor-ten steel barn - with unique influences. The Owner and the Architect share a deep love of, and a long history with Africa where the Architect lived for six years and the Owner continues to visit and engage local artists every year. Their shared connection with this continent was an instrumental influence on the architecture, landscape, and interiors. The corrugated Cor-ten steel roof w…
- [Leonard Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/leonard-residence-pj-vj~99745)
  - Location: Los Angeles, CA
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: This 4,000-square-foot residence is situated on a 45-degree-angle downward sloping canyon site in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Embracing an entry courtyard, the structure is a composition of vast areas in glass supported by steel and concrete, tracing its lineage to the case study houses of LA. The hillside-bound site presented the most obvious challenge as well as opportunity for design. To achieve the vision objectives, the house is spliced into multiple levels to accommodate and embrac…
- [Zeidler Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/zeidler-residence-pj-vj~5843)
  - Location: Aptos, CA
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Located on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 3,500-sf Zeidler Residence arranges interior and exterior living spaces to maximize views, natural light, and ocean breezes within a subtle, sophisticated material palette. Designed for a retired couple with grown children, the house sits on a relatively flat corner lot with expansive views of the Pacific and vegetated cliff that leads from the site, down to the beach. The parti divides the program into two main structures connected by a s…
- [Kuhlman Road](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/kuhlman-road-pj-vj~5534234)
  - Location: Houston, TX
  - Photos: 30
  - Description: A family purchased a two-acre wooded site in an upscale Houston neighborhood of traditional houses. The site is a flag lot, unique in the area, and offered the opportunity to create an architecture that would provide a respite from the pressures of work and an oasis to share with their two kids and extended family and friends. The understated design connects strongly with its leafy setting with large expanses of glass alternating with masses of Texas limestone, the largest of which is a stair vo…
- [Boxenbaum Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/boxenbaum-residence-pj-vj~5846)
  - Location: Beverly Hills, CA
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Situated on a sloping corner lot across from an elementary school, the Boxenbaum House orients itself away from two perimeter streets towards rear and side outdoor spaces and gardens for privacy and serenity. The home's principle function, other than the primary residence of a couple with grown children, is to create a gallery for the work of noted artist Kharlene Boxenbaum. To do this, the design maximizes large wall expanses bathed in ambient light - an ideal environment for showcasing art. Th…
- [700 Palms Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/700-palms-residence-pj-vj~5847)
  - Location: Venice, CA
  - Photos: 22
  - Description: This sustainable residence a half mile from the Pacific Ocean responds to the bohemian spirit of Venice, California, while maximizing volume, light, and privacy on a narrow lot. Raw, honest materials fit in with the grittiness of the local environment; the maintenance-free exterior of Cor-ten steel, Trex, copper, and stucco weathers naturally, while interior surfaces are left unpainted. The house dissolves the barriers between indoors and out, creating flexible spaces that take advantage of the…
- [Waldfogel Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/waldfogel-residence-pj-vj~5845)
  - Location: Palo Alto, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: Urbane and sophisticated, this 8,000 sf house in Silicon Valley takes its cues from the surrounding community and its art collector owners. The house opens on all sides through a pinwheel plan organized around a 3-feet-thick poured-in-place concrete axial wall that is punctuated by shelves displaying the couple’s unique art collections. Two parallel two-story wings extend from this central spine, opening to four distinct garden courtyards. The entrance court doubles as a terrace for the double-h…
- [Schindler House on Ellis Avenue](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/schindler-house-on-ellis-avenue-pj-vj~84468)
  - Location: Inglewood, CA
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: This 2-bedroom, 1000 sf house was originally designed by Rudolf M. Schindler in 1938. The house is one of three single-story stucco tract homes Schindler designed on a quiet, tree-lined street. The house had only two owners and was in original but poor condition, and saving it amounted to a major rescue effort. The intention was to preserve the original design and details as much as possible while adding modern amenities so that a new family could live in and enjoy it. Many interior elements, in…
- [Waverley](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/waverley-pj-vj~5856032)
  - Location: Palo Alto, CA
  - Photos: 26
  - Description: The architecture of this home designed for a young couple is a study in simple composition and refined materiality with an emphasis on craft. The massing defines solid and void, captures natural light, and seeks to ‘experience the outdoors from within’, leveraging the site’s unique asset – a collection of beautiful mature trees. The ground floor volumes are wrapped in an elongated hand-fired brick, emphasizing the horizontality of the architecture that lays solidly on the land. Wood-slatted ceil…
- [Webster Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/webster-residence-pj-vj~101673)
  - Location: Venice, CA
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: This house in the heart of Venice Beach represents another variation on courtyard living as a sensible solution to maximizing privacy and outdoor enjoyment in an urban setting. The principal living areas are two-story painted stucco boxes separated by a garden; with concrete steps descending from the rear space, which is built at a higher level, the courtyard becomes a verdant amphitheatre. Glass roll-up doors facing the interior courtyard and the front entrance court allow unimpeded views throu…
