Fearless describes both the spirit and work of ALISONDAMONTE

After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in Political Science, Alison moved to San Francisco with no job, no apartment and one Niels Møller chair she found on the street. Though she always dreamed of becoming an architect, she soon realized her love of bold patterns, vivid colors and rare vintage furniture was better suited to interior design. Honing her skills at Martha Angus and Brayton Hughes Design Studios, Alison established her eponymous firm in 2012.

Inspired by the idea of limitless possibility born in the Space Age and a desire to express personality with color Alison and her team bring a playful, modern sensibility to every project. Whether designing a Berkeley home for a busy, art-loving family or an urban, rock and roll pied-à-terre, the San Francisco-based firm infuses each project with whimsical, California cool.

**★★★★★ — Mike Vernal, March 2022**

> Alison is great – we've worked with her on multiple projects including our old house in San Francisco and our current home in Palo Alto. They were great at both adapting to and including existing pieces and then also designing some rooms or places completely from scratch. Alison and crew were always attentive, timely and flexible. We are big fans!

**★★★★★ — TM, March 2022**

> Alison is one of a kind, her taste is amazing AND she listens to her clients (me) for what our needs are and what really will work for us. She doesn't compromise on taste and style while understanding client needs and preferences. Our home is AMAZING because of her work and we get so many compliments from guests.

**★★★★★ — Jennifer Cooney, March 2022**

> As soon as I saw Alison's website I knew I found my person. I absolutely love her design sensibility, her style, her everything... She is super clever and finds the most interesting pieces whether it is a vase or end table. Alison is also GREAT at mixing high and low end items... again whether is it a bathroom sconce or chandelier.

> In addition, love her use of color and "white" space. She designed our 1300 sq ft condo perfectly, which I LOVED until the day we moved... now we are working together again to create a bohemian/modern look in our new 5k sq ft home... it needs lots of love, and she is once again my person! Thanks A!

**★★★★★ — Heirloom Builders, March 2022**

> Alison was an invaluable member of the design team for our shared Bernal Heights remodeling project. In addition to a great sense of style and imagination, Alison and her team were great at problem solving and adapting to shifting needs as the project expanded beyond it's original scope. Alison's collaborative spirit and warm personality made her a pleasure to work with. We look forward to sharing projects together again in the near future.

**★★★★★ — Maria Raven, March 2022**

> Alison is incredible! So thoughtful, stylish, and does a wonderful mix of vintage and new. She has helped me with multiple different homes, with different styles, and I love all of it as do my guests! Very much listens to clients and gets to know their style/likes, also not afraid to take risks that end up working amazingly well. Wouldn't work with anyone else.

**★★★★★ — North Bay Construction, LLC, Sept. 2017**

> Alison is a designer that understands how to work with clients and is detail oriented. We at North Bay Construction would recommend Alison on all of our residential projects due to her character and ability to execute high design.

## Selected projects

- [The Woods](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-woods-pj-vj~2537214)
  - Location: La Honda, CA
  - Photos: 36
  - Description: Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this house was built to accommodate up to 25 people at a time. A modern take on a forest lodge, the client wanted large and durable gathering spaces and smaller sleeping rooms. Thoughtful selection and arrangement of furniture created living spaces that are at once generous and cozy. \#easiersaidthandone \#notaxidermyhere
- [Small Stage](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/small-stage-pj-vj~1600385)
  - Location: Berkeley, CA
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Such was the mandate of long-time collaborator and friend, architect David Yama, after completing a remodel to this 1960’s Berkeley home. He wanted the place staged to show his client how the right furnishings, art, and arrangement might bring out the architecture. Taking cues from two existing pieces – a fantastically bold, apple green couch and a painting by Berkeley-based artist Karen Smidth – and working with trusted vendors, the house was staged and photographed within a single weekend.

- [Eichler's Disco](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/eichler-s-disco-pj-vj~372252)
  - Location: Palo Alto, CA
  - Photos: 27
  - Description: Following an elegant renovation by Yamamar Architecture that brought light and openness to this 70’s-era Eichler came the hot pink furniture, metallic wallpaper and pop art that reflect this client’s unique sense of play and adventure, and her love of music. A design soul sister makes for a good client; this project was truly about having sparkly fun all day long.
- [Resident Art](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/resident-art-pj-vj~1600347)
  - Location: Berkeley, CA
  - Photos: 34
  - Description: Recent East Coast transplants wanted a sparse, white backdrop for their expansive art collection, as well as an authentic design response to their mid-century home, with its bay views, exposed wood beams and original 1960’s cast concrete fireplace. Vibrant colors, handcrafted fixtures and modern furniture take cues from each installation, unifying the space and meshing art with life.

- [Glam Ranch](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/glam-ranch-pj-vj~1600329)
  - Location: San Mateo, CA
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: One way to reflect this client's unique personality was to throw shade at tradition by hanging a neon sign that says “Timeless," above the mantel. A small, decorative project – two rooms at the front of a suburban ranch house – this project was about working with a creative client to craft her own spaces with vibrant colors, modern forms, glam and fun.
- [Design Lab](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/design-lab-pj-vj~1600361)
  - Location: San Francisco, CA
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Does that mustard yellow lamp work with the mauve paint? What about those rare, vintage chairs with the lucite feet found in Rome: they’re comfortable, but are they too boxy? And that neon orange “bullet” from Marfa – it’s certainly nothing a client would like, but wait, would they? The design lab might (currently) have a "Pizza Hut" tile floor in the kitchen and rubber baseboards falling off in the bathroom walls, but with high ceilings and great light, where better than a designer’s own home t…
- [No Ordinary Blue](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/no-ordinary-blue-pj-vj~7437876)
  - Location: Palo Alto, CA
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: With high ceilings, garden views, and plenty of natural daylight, this timeless 1920’s house offers a dynamic canvas for modern art and life. The home is a dialogue between art and space, and the conversation carries on in bold colors and playful geometries throughout each room. The design gestures are joy-filled in technicolor yet attuned to the everyday needs of the family. Throughout each room, abstract artwork offers moments of silence and pause, cueing time for family and self. Pieces of ar…
- [Soul Revival](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/soul-revival-pj-vj~7437211)
  - Location: Berkeley, CA
  - Photos: 45
  - Description: A long-time client wanted a change from living in minimalist spaces. While her previous homes were bright and airy, when looking to relocate she fell in love with a moodier and architecturally significant Berkeley residence designed by Willis Polk in 1915. Studio Principal, Alison Damonte, guided the respectful update of the historic property transforming it for modern life. Original finishes and details, previously hidden over time, were revealed and restored. The new interiors embraced the soa…
- [Elevated Mood](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/elevated-mood-pj-vj~7437873)
  - Location: Calistoga, CA
  - Photos: 18
  - Description: Unexpected colors, bespoke furnishings, and evocative photography enhance the minimalist architecture of this Calistoga getaway. Large windows frame striking views and natural textures of the surrounding hillsides, cocooning the home with a calming sense of retreat. The client’s art collection— including works by Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Edward Burtynsky, Leo Villareal, and Laurie Simmons—called for a muted palette that lets the artwork speak for itself. Commensurate in tone, the furniture, lighti…
