The price tag for the work was ~$5k and I am left with embarrassing hardwood floors (puddles of poly, bubbles of poly all over and bits of poly being consumed by my toddlers who are crawling on the floors). We had an addition (sun room and laundry room) built by a different contractor in the fall of 2008. Little did we know, the contractor did a terrible job with the insulation. Every time the temperatures dipped below freezing, our pipes would freeze and I couldn't do laundry. Doug Lewis Remodeling redid the entire insulation. They did a great job at an affordable price and our pipes no longer freeze. The kitchen had already been "redone" but it was so cramped and dark that I reconfigured it. First I removed all the upper cabinets, ceiling and dark granite countertops. Then moved around the base cabinets, relocated the refrigerator, added lighter granite, new single bowl sink, appliances scaled to size of house, window, cork flooring and a beech breakfast bar. Made existing refrigerator space into a large pantry. A: Good call on exposing the rafters. not much else to do when you have a 6'2" ceiling! **Q: White painted cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are getting ready to put new white painted cabinets in. Now that we are close, I am getting cold feet. We have 3 dogs and an active family who is not that careful in the kitchen. I am wondering about other's experiences with white cabinets with any nicks, scratches etc. Thanks! A: I agree with Kruden. The protective coating should protect your cabinets from most cases. However you can never get around dogs chewing up the wood or deliberately scratching. You will get wear and tear on any kind of finish eventually. another option would be to use a distressed or antique finish that already has a worn look. This is a vanity that we had custom built and painted for one of our clients. **Q: Kitchen Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need help with suggestion on my kitchen. I am knocking out wall to make bigger and I would like to make a breakfast bar by putting piece of granite on the table. Then I want to change to hardwood floors in kitchen so it all matches. Do you think I should redo color of floors in living room and dining room or keep. Last what back splash should i do. I don't want to redo everything yet. I need to gut it all in a couple of years but for now I want to make changes so I can be happy with it. A: It is very hard to advise one way or another. it all depends on your aesthetic preferences and the look you are aiming for. This is a kitchen we did where we removed a wall and replaced it with a breakfast bar and redid the hardwood flooring as well. I hope this helps and gives you some additional ideas. **Q: What backsplash counters and flooring?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I want to update my kitchen with new counters, backsplash and flooring, I have some ideas but am unsure of what to do. Any suggestions?? I am on a budget so keeping the existing cabinets is a must, but what would go well with them is the problem. I also plan on new stainless steel appliances. A: on the floor and back splash I would stay light to create some contrast with your cabinets but not white. A tan or natural stone look. if you use the same tile for both consider 6" on the walls and 12" on the floor. One or the other run diagonally would be ok but not both. For the counter top I would use something a little darker than the tile with some accents. Giallo Ornamentale, Venetian Gold or Golden Garnet are some we like. Hope this helps **Q: Need Your Help to create a welcoming approach to house** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are slowly renovating this old farmhouse and need suggestions for making the walkway to the entry a bit more welcoming than it is. The shrubs can go. We have plenty of room for a garden area. We plan on having a small deck off the entry and maybe a pergola. This isn't the front door, but will be the door that is used most often. If this were your project, what would you do? A: It's nice to see you addressing the exterior early in the project. The old school of thought was to work your way room the inside out. We promote dressing up the outside early. if you are living in it it gives you a sense of pride in the project and is inviting for you or guests. I would suggest a natural stone walk. Durable, popular and timeless. The shrubs do need to go, for something smaller and with more character. Big green shrubs are not so popular these days and they can detract from the beauty of your home.
