This was by far the best experience I have ever experienced. Their process is amazing start to finish. With the first meeting that included and estimate, to the second design meeting, to selecting materials, starting the project, and everything in between. My wife and I started with a vision of wanting a covered patio structure, but we had no idea on how to make it work. Ben very quickly proposed a solution that turned into a custom new patio cover that was tied into our existing roof. You would never know that it was an addition. And, then Jeff and his carpenters made the most beautiful custom covered patio with a cathedral ceiling and tongue and grove cedar boards; it is more than we ever expected. I have never seen so much pride taken on a project. After the patio cover was completed, came the new paver patio. They had to remove an existing concrete patio and then install the new patio paver with a new design. This was a different crew than the carpenters, and again we were amazed the the quality as well as the speed. Even when we had a hiccup with the wrong color of railings being ordered, they had them completely swapped out and the right ones installed in less than a day! > > Once construction was done, their crew made a serious effort in trying to clean up every loose screw, piece of debris, etc., and tried to make it seem as though they had never been there, even though they were contending with some serious mud that was created by some late season snow. > > As for the final product, we love it! A: This deck is approximately 450 sq.ft not including the stairs and landing. It is 16' deep (out from the house) at its furthest. Plenty of room for lounging, gilling and dining! **Q: do you ever not stain** *(in Photo Questions)* Left natural how. Does cedar age A: We do not recommend leaving cedar unstained. Cedar is naturally decay-resistant, but water is the enemy, leaching the natural tannins, oils and color out of the wood. This leads to cracks, splits and grayness over time. Staining adds water repellency and pigmentation (color) protects from harmful UV damage. We do not recommend clear coat stains on cedar exposed to sun because clear coats allow the cedar to go gray over time. Clear coats are fine for ceiling finishes and cedar that is not exposed to direct sunlight or precipitation. Hope this helps! **Q: Color** *(in Photo Questions)* What type of stain or paint was used? A: The stain used here on cedar is a water-based semi-transparent product from Sherwin-Williams. Color \#SW3531 As you can see, stains are capable of creating a strong color (like paint) but have the added benefit of penetrating the wood to seal out moisture. Don't ever paint exterior wood because it forms a film that traps moisture, speeding up the decay process. I am wondering if it would fit into our yard. A: It is a dramatic look, in a tiny space! The support posts in front are spaced 10'0" outside edge to outside edge, and the posts in the rear are spaced 7'0" outside-to-outside. Also, the beam in front is 6" higher than the beam in back, creating even more interest when we "fanned" the rafters! Since this pergola is subject to the lateral forces of the swing, it is important to note the angled bracing.
