We selected Don Young thermally broken aluminum windows with perimeter grids (also called modified prairie grid). I had multiple quotes from five or six vendors, and I researched each vendor and window offering thoroughly.  I chose Ultra Windows because of the positive reviews and positive comments on forums, high rating with the Better Business Bureau, and because of the owner Randy’s knowledge about proper window installation and window construction. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Window selection help!** *(in Building a Home)*

We’re currently in the position of needing to replace our siding and all of our windows. While I’d love to be able to order higher-end windows, our budget won’t allow it.

We’ve narrowed our search down to the Andersen 100 series, the Simonton Daylight Max and Simonton Meidera.  I’d really appreciate any advice on which window we should choose.

A: Given the options listed, the Andersen 100 series isn't a bad choice if you are using casements and fixed units. Not a big fan of their single hungs though.

**Q: Window condensation damage** *(in Cleaning Tips)*

Getting new windows is not an option for me right now. There is no leak, but the surrouding is damaged from condensation from showers and the cold weather. how can i keep this from getting worse in the meantime? current plan is to wipe windows down and leave the blinds up and fan going every morning. any other help? i wonder if i should peel this paint all the way off? it appears the whole sheet of paint could be peeled off. thanks.

A: I agree. The condensation on the glass indicates that excessive indoor humidity must be dealt with. WoW has provided you with the ways to deal with the problem. Once the condensation issue is resolved, the sheetrock will most likely need to be replaced at the return, as the damage will go deeper than the paint.

**Q: Window choices for Smoky Mountain home** *(in Building a Home)*

We are building in the Smoky Mountains and I have been researching window and door options.  Sierra Pacific aluminum clad has come up as an option, yet I've only used Anderson wood clad, Milgard and Marvin vinyl clad in my past builds.  We have hot humid summers and cold wet winters.  Research so far suggests Anderson, Pella, and Jeld-wen as top contenders.   I'm looking for solid quality with good energy efficiency to complement the house efficiencies (insulation, etc.) we'll be investing in.   In terms of pricing as good, better or best, we're thinking better is our best bet.    I'd appreciate any thoughts or perspectives on this.

A: Marvin doesn't make a vinyl clad window, but their aluminum clad is the best in the wood industry. Marvin's Elevate series could be a good option worth considering. Pella is a great marketing company, but few pros here would recommend them. Same goes for Jeld-Wen. I have no experience with Sierra Pacific, but they are budget friendly.

**Q: RBA Anderson Acclaim windows are noisy!** *(in Home Repair)*

What can anyone tell me about specs on RBA Acclaim windows. 

Does anyone know how thick the glass is on Acclaim windows and are they different thicknesses?  In my brief research since this I've learned each pane needs to be different otherwise the sound can be amplified which is what it feels like.

We've been in this house for 3 years.  It's next to a University and corners on a pretty active road - during the school year there's barely minutes when cars don't pass by.  We got new windows (NT Windows) on the back side of the house during a remodel w my contractor last year.  Now we did the remaining original single pane aluminums w storms that were on the front and side facing the busy road.  I had 2 appts for bids - Anderson and the company that we had used on the back of the house.  I was just ready to get the ball rolling and RBA was first and they're the best they claim right?  Noise was my number one issue to the sales guy.  I was not expecting sound proof but I expected SOME improvement.  Especially when RBA says on their website "Are you tired of hearing the trash truck" on their site.  Noise attenuation is standard on all RBA windows.  GREAT!  I'll get SOME relief.

I see them installed, they looks snug, no obvious gaps before sealing.  

It's the end of the day so pretty quiet.  The next day I'm in the bathroom - the farthest room from the noisy road - and it's so loud as the morning work and school crowds start moving through the neighborhood.  It's like the hum of an airplane constantly.  There's a reverberation -  It sounds like I'm in a tin can is the best way I can explain.  I can even hear road noise coming out of that bathroom when I stand within my room/closet area where I never heard noise before.  

Standing in the kitchen along the road side of the house it's also so noisy and 'tinny' sounding.  I also notice my brand new AC is making noise outside my window - oh no I can just hear it now w these Anderson windows.

I did decibel readings before and after and it's literally the same but worse quality of sound - the tinny feel to it.

We spoke the supervisor and had someone come take a listen - of course school is out and traffic has dropped significantly but he admitted hearing the noise - as did the intall crew when I asked them the next day when they came to do 1 last window.  But I said image that brief tinny sound CONSTANTLY w the school traffic.  Oh and on the 2nd day I thought the bathroom window was open since I could hear the guys outside chatting.  I looked out expecting to see them right there - they were on the other side of my front door walkway in front of another window.  It was just talking - not laughing loud joking.

SO not sure where this will go or what my options might be.

The guy pulled back some siding and saw the correct liners and foam around and believes install looks correct. 

But if noise outside is a concern DO NOT BUY RBA windows.

A: A prime window with a storm window combination is hard to beat when it comes to noise abatement without upgrading to laminated glass.

**Q: Professionally installed wood door warped after 16 months!** *(in Home Repair)*

About 1.5 years ago we had our interior doors professionally replaced. Two nights ago we  discovered that one of the new doors has warped since installation. (I had been feeling around all our doors to find leakage and felt a lot of air flowing around this particular door, prompting my husband and I to look at it closely). The top of the door no longer fits flush with the door frame above it, the door bows at the upper center and away from the frame. Husband used level to check surrounding walls and trim, and those are straight plumb level and square. Our contract warranties the doors for only 1 year.  Oh man I am getting depressed thinking about this $800 door that doesn't even fit after 16 months!  We live in NC where summers are humid and this door goes from our sunroom into the garage where it does indeed get hot, but shouldn't a new wood door last longer than 16 months even so?  Any advice? I just can't imagine that people pay $800 for a door that only fits for 16 months.

A: Millworkman is correct. Many manufacturers will void their warranties if the door isn't primed and painted or stained and sealed on all 6 sides of the slab. Did the installer also finish the door, or did you have that done later by a painter?

Doors into the garage are often in laundry rooms. Is that the case here?

I was hoping to get a recommendation or two for thermally broken aluminum windows?
Im in Iowa and realize aluminum doesn't perform as well in cold climates, but Im done chasing fictitious numbers and want durable hardware and frame to tape my window kits to..

A: I am a huge fan of TBA windows, and it's the predominate product that we sell, but then I'm in Houston. I would personally never recommend it for Iowa. During the winter months you are likely to have condensation and even ice on the interior. If you are trying to avoid vinyl, you might look at fiberglass.
If you do go with TBA windows, it will be absolutely critical to ensure that they are airtight around the perimeter (spray foam) to avoid a thermal bypass with the air.
