I went to the store looking to do a total overhaul of a bathroom and to get new kitchen counters. The staff was a great help showing me different options for my counters based on the colors of my cabinets. They showed me different options of tile and granite. They also gave examples of how different back splash options can drastically change the look of your kitchen from a modern feel to a more rustic look. They made picking out the tile for the bathroom very easy with different suggestions on how dark of a tile I could get without creating a cave like feel in my bathroom due to the lighting. After ordering some of my tile they realized it was from two different dye lots and they were on top of getting me the matching tile. They always kept me informed as to what was going on with the order. We are not doing a tile backsplash but will have a 4 inch granite backsplash. I was wondering if we should stick with 4 inch or make it smaller? Granite will be brushed steel grey. Here's the kitchen: A: I wouldn't go any less than a 4" height. Typically backsplashes are either 4" or 6" (or up to the bottom of the windows). **Q: Wooden floor and wood-like tiles flow** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi guys, I really like the idea of having a wood-looking tiles in our bathroom, we are also planning to have a wooden floor elsewhere in our apartment (still haven't decided on which one). The dilemma I have is whether it is worth having something that won't 'flow' and looks obvious that it is not the same - I guess it's not going to be possible to exactly match the colour of our wooden floor with the tiles so it will be kind of two different types of 'wood' look. Do you think it's worth trying or should I just abandon the idea? A: I think this might be hard to pull off but maybe if you set the bathroom wood look tiles in a herringbone pattern it would be enough of a contrast again the real wood. **Q: What flooring matches these wooden stairs?** *(in Flooring)* We have a finished family room in the basement, currently carpeted in a beige berber carpet. The stairs leading down to the family room area are wood and in good shape. I'd like to replace the carpet (it's really badly stained in some areas and I don't like carpet in general.) I'm confused as to what floor to put in. A wooden floor that matches the stairs may be the only obvious choice, but I don't even particularly like the color of the wood on the stairs and am hesitant to put down wood in the basement. Would it be criminal to put down a laminate? Would it have to match the wooden stairs or can we go in a completely different direction? I prefer a more ashen, distressed wood look but am afraid it'd look bad to match two different tones, as well as potentially two different types of flooring! I've also thought of tile that is like faux wood but that might be cold in the basement. Any ideas? A: You could use a tile that would compliment the wood color. Or if that is too cold, I like the idea of a carpet runner down the stairs with carpet on the floor. **Q: kitchen color scheme** *(in Paint)* I'm wanting to change my kitchen wall color. I have farmhouse kitchen cabinets. black counter tops. and the hallway is a grey color and it comes into the kitchen. so needs something to go with all of that. Do not want this orange anymor. A: I think a lighter color would brighten up the room and make it even appear to be larger. Possibly a lighter gray or the same gray from the hallway. **Q: Will the counter top and floor work together or will it be too boring?** *(in Polls)* The kitchen cabinets will be stained on Maple wood (dark), but still showing a little grain. The photo is of the floor and counter top choice. This has not been finalized. The stone is Taj Mahal and the flooring is SOHO Onyx Antique. Looking for opinions of if these work together or is the pairing too boring? Hoping to make a decision within the week. Thanks in advance. A: I think your countertop choice is beautiful and coordinates well with your floor choice. It definitely will not be boring as the floor has a lot of movement. I think a dark cabinet would compliment both the countertop and floor. **Q: Before and After "Room With a View" Kitchen Remodel** *(in Before & After)* The clients we worked with on this project wanted to have a brighter kitchen with a view to the lake. The decision was made to relocate the kitchen and tear down a wall in order to achieve this. To add to the concept of brightness, all of the cabinets were done in white with a Carrara Marble countertop in addition to a white, lake-facing sink. Every part of this kitchen, from the organization to the trim, was designed around the ability to see the lake and bring as much light into the space as possible. The result is this updated space with a contemporary twist on the classic lake home. We are very pleased that the client loves the space and will continue to enjoy this "room with a view." BEFORE: This is the view from the location of the old kitchen. It is facing the front yard, with walls all around, rather than facing the lake. AFTER: You can immediately see the dramatic increase in light in the new space. The cabinets, countertops, and ceiling details all help reflect the light. The change in location also helps achieve the brightness by giving the kitchen a direct line of sight to the lake view window. BEFORE: This view is from the new kitchen location. This wall prevents light from entering, as well as making the space feel cramped. AFTER: With the removal of the wall and addition of a lake-facing window, the light now pours throughout the space and creates a large, open atmosphere.
