I made the wrong backsplash choice!** *(in Design Dilemma)* My husband and I recently bought a home and with a month to move in, we made a few changes - refinished the floors, re-tiled the fireplace, plan to paint, etc. We also replaced the kitchen backsplash, which was a beachy-blue mosaic tile before. I wanted a more farmhouse-industrial feel to the kitchen, so I opted for subway tile with black grout. I was leaning towards a matte tile but was afraid it would be too muted, so we chose a long white subway tile with some gloss. The finished product looks cheap and something just feels off (and now I think the matte would have been a better call). I plan to replace the chrome bin-pulls and knobs with matte black, but what else could I add to this space to give it the feel I want? Would a matte seal on the tile give the backsplash a matte look, or is that NOT a good idea? Also, should the grout line that runs next to the cabinets be caulked to match the cabinet color, or is it customary to leave the dark grout line? Left like it is in the photo, it seems to make an outline, and I don't know if that's a good look... \*We also plan to replace the chrome on the island with brass and the pendant lights with brass pendant lights. Have you considered painting the cabinets? **Q: Best Stain/Sealant for Pine Deck** *(in Porches & Decks)* I have a one-year old deck that the contractor put Olympic Honeygold Stain/Sealant (which says 4 year protection) on what I think is pine. All of the finish they put on the deck (which was beautiful when it was applied) is just about gone. My husband and I want to know what we can apply that will look nice and last more than one year. Do any of the stains and sealants last more than a few years? A: Reach out to your contractor and clarify exactly the type of wood and how you can maintain it. Take a photo of how the wood is weathering. **Q: Help I have a circle I don't know what to do with!** *(in Landscape Design)* We took down an above ground pool that our deck was built around. Now I'm not sure what to do with this round space between the deck and the house. I'm afraid anything I do will still look very obvious that a pool used to be there. We were thinking of powder coated alum railing but the cost seems crazy for something that we are not even a huge fan of. Our allowance is $6000 and our gc just gave us a bid for $11.5k... don't get me started. At any rate we were looking at some other alternatives and had some questions. The distance between the posts in the pic are about 10' so we are looking at someone that sells a 10' section unless there is another option? Here are our thought: Trex/Composite/PVC Railing: We like the look but are not sure they make a 10' section with top/botton rail and baulsters? Should there be a support in the center and if so how can I do it? Do I have to add another post in the middle or a simple support foot? Cable Railing: Expensive hardware but I can do the install myself if needed. We got a quote for $3500 for the hardware but were not sure about the 10' span. Can the cable and top rail span 10' or do I need some sort of intermediate post (maybe a small one)? Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! A: It sounds like you don't have a lot of confidence in your general contractor.
