I highly recommend Malcolm and Southern Design for anyone seeking top-notch landscaping services in the Highland Park/Dallas area. > Meghan ;) **★ — Chase Wheeler, Feb. 2024** > I engaged these guys to pour a concrete pad in my courtyard, install an accompanying courtyard french drain system that drained to the street, and install a desert scape in the courtyard. > > The issues started with the concrete pad. The pad has my house on 3 contiguous sides with the fourth side being the courtyard desert scape they installed. I specifically instructed Malcolm (the owner I think), the pad should slope away from the house on all 3 sides and towards the desert scape. What I ended up with is a pad that slopes away from 2 sides of my house and slopes into the 3rd side. I immediately noticed this and asked Malcolm about it. He assured me it was not a problem (more on this later). > > Additionally, where the drain dumped to the street I had specifically asked that the curb be cored (a hole put in the curb) and was assured that this would be done. To my surprise, I return from work on day 3 and they just installed a plastic pop up. Again Malcolm assured me it would not be an issue (also more on this later) and provided a nonsensical excuse on why they couldn't core the curb. > > Well, after 4 days they finished the work and I was generally very happy. My courtyard looked beautiful and I had seemingly solved my drainage problem. > > Then, not but a few days later, the irrigation system they installed in my desert scape kept failing. Specifically, the foundation drip hoses kept ripping apart and flooding portions of my courtyard. I immediately called Malcolm and he dispatched someone to fix it right away which I gave them a pass on. Well fast forward 2 months and I still don't have a working irrigation system and Malcolm, or some of his lieutenants had been back to my house on 5 separate occasions. Finally, Malcolm had his professional sprinkler guy Freddy come out and when he saw the work, he just shook his head. 1 - They did not install pressure regulators, 2 - they used the wrong size hoses for the fittings. The "fixes" they had done to that point were installin zip ties wherever the hoses popped. One pops, they zip tie it, then the next one in the line pops. > > Back to the concrete pad. The first time we received a heavy rain, the water immediately started pooling next to my house as I had feared. It got bad enough that cracks started to appear in my brickwork from my foundation moving. At this point Malcolm had full on ghosted me. > > Also, where they had installed the pop up for my french drain to dump to the street (as opposed to coring the curb) results in my sidewalk flooding everytime there is a heavy rain and now one of the sidewalk pavers is sinking. > > Lastly, when they trenched for my french drain they had to divert a sprinkler line around the drain pipe. This eventually broke and flooded my front yard (shoddy work). > > This ends with me threatening a lawsuit and finally Malcolm responds. They have now installed a new drain where the pad slopes to the house to mitigate the water pooling. They were able to identify and correct some drainage issues to keep the water from going toward my home. They also installed a concrete driveway. They added a cedar fence, cedar overhang to my side and back patio area and I can tell you this company has a lot of creative vision when it comes to landscaping a patio design. > > They are highly knowledgeable about construction, landscaping and project management.
