I built a pool DIY style (homeowner as general contractor) using the design Mike created and the subcontractors he recommended. During the design phase Mike worked closely with us to ensure the design included what we wanted but also stayed within our budget. Pool builders in south Texas are a dime a dozen and I am so glad that I found Mike because he is a master of design and cared as much about our pool as we did. I was looking for a person who could design a pool customized for our backyard and found a talented person who truly took pride in their work and put 100 percent into the job. I needed subcontractors to start the building process and Mike provided references for people he regularly worked with. As I contacted people I found that when I mentioned Mike they all had nothing but great things to say about him. Some of them even stopped our discussion to take time and talk about their experience working with him, every single one was positive. I had never built a pool before so there were plenty of times that I had questions. Five months after paying Mike for a design he was there when I called or texted. Mike took time to pass along his knowledge of the steps in the building process and offer advice and guidance. He even stopped by several times to check on the work. He went above and beyond to help us build our pool and he was just the designer. > > During the process I learned how much the pool builder, who will be acting as the general contractor must advocate for the homeowner. The implementation of the actual pool design is so much more than showing someone the design and asking them to implement it. Being the general contractor on our pool I found out how much effort and time is required to ensure that a pool is built exactly as designed. For example, the steps and benches in our pool were designed one way but turned out slightly different. In order to get those steps and benches to look the way they did in the design I, as the general contractor, would have to have been there yelling over the noise of the cement truck at the people pouring the concrete, hawk eying their work as they shaped the benches. As you can see in each of the pool pictures on this site, Mike's benches are beautiful. These are the small details that Mike will labor over as the pool is being built. I talked with several homeowners who recently built $100,000+ pools through some of the big name pool builders in the San Antonio area. These homeowners were asked by their pool builder to make compromises during the pool building process. For example, one person’s pool was built so close to their house that when they stepped off the existing back patio, they would step in water because the excavation was done improperly. Their pool builder did not fix it and instead they had to modify their existing back patio. Mike will never ask you to compromise. When I encountered issues and consulted with Mike to find out what he would do, he told me he would have the work redone. Redoing work is expensive, it takes time, and to get it done it requires a general contractor who cares enough to advocate strongly on behalf of the homeowner and be willing to absorb the cost. > > The quality of the pool starts with a design that is not only aesthetically pleasing but one that has building specifications that are customized for the backyard. Our backyard is on a downward slope and Mike's design included specifications to account for special circumstances such as drainage and thicker walls to ensure structural integrity of the pool as the backside of the pool is partially out of the ground. The quality of the pool also depends on the the quality of work of each person during all steps of the building process. When we started thinking about building a pool, we only thought about all of the great things that go along with the pool such as kids playing, private swimming in our backyard, and pool parties. We did not think about things like the structural integrity of the pool in 20 years. Throughout the building process I spoke with a number of subcontractors and heard horror stories about things that went wrong with pools such as cracking, shifting, and leaking caused by poor design and bad workmanship. Many people worked on our pool during each step in the building process. Each person who touched the pool had to be the best at what they did so that we did not turn into one of those stories in 20 years. I had first hand experience working with the subcontractors Mike works with. These were people who Mike carefully selected, people who he has worked with for years, and they were the very best at what they did. All but two steps in our building process were done by people Mike recommended and all steps went perfect except for those two. All of Mike's subcontractors were honest, reliable, gave us a fair price, and most importantly the quality of their work was nothing short of outstanding. If you choose to go with Mike to design and build your pool you will get all of those things. > > Now that all is said and done we have a beautiful backyard with a spectacular swimming pool.
