We are a dynamic, multifaceted architecture studio built on the simple notion that buildings should bring joy. Our aesthetic is thoroughly modern, and our approach is thoroughly human. We believe a collaborative, open-forum environment inspires creativity, transparency, and in turn, the best possible results. Yet while our manner may be casual, our process is thoughtful, comprehensive, and exacting. We specialize in custom homes and full-scale renovations, and are committed to creating designs that bring balance, function and beauty to the places where you live, work, and play.

Tom is nationally recognized in the industry with over 30 years of experience in architecture, interiors and stage design. With every unique endeavor, he seeks to build sophisticated, high-quality designs while establishing real, lasting relationships with his clients. When Tom is not working in tandem with his wife Kelly, he can often be found lecturing on subjects involving the intersection of architecture and the performing arts. He received his BA in Drama from UC, San Diego, and holds a M.Arch. degree from Yale School of Architecture.

Kelly is an architectural designer with a unique background. She is a former attorney whose combined experience in law, business and architecture allows her to work from an uncommon vantage point. Before turning her passion for design into a profession, Kelly held several high level, public and private sector positions, including serving as chief of staff at the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. At Kamm, she employs this broad life experience to inform her design process and build relationships – bringing both an analytical and intuitive approach to her projects. In her spare time, she enjoys the arts (and sometimes performs!). Kelly received her M.Arch., with honors, from the University of Illinois School of Architecture and her BA in History from University of Virginia

> We worked with Kamm Architecture on a substantial home renovation. The finished product was exceptional and we recommend them highly. They had exceptional insight and proposed ideas we hadn't considered, were great at working with our goals and constraints, met deadlines and worked within our budget, and were a pleasure to work with. They combined creativity, technical skill, and a strong understanding of practical constraints like the permitting process. We love the finished product and plan on working with them again on our next renovation.

> We engaged Kamm Architecture to provide architectural, permitting, and contract administration services for our home renovation. We could not be happier with the results! After much back and forth on bumping out the footprint and interior configuration, we arrived at our ideal plan with the Kamm's guidance, and now have a livable home we love and enjoy every day. Tom and Kelly are both creative and practical, they are problem solvers, flexible with input, show attention to detail, and worked very well with DCRA and our contractor. We highly recommend them for your project!

> We thought about renovating for many years, and had worked out what we imagined was our plan. From Tom's very first visit forward, we found ourselves both listened to and helped along toward our eventual great success. Tom is easy-going and laid back and while his aesthetic may not be identical to ours, he is extremely flexible and knows how to adapt his knowledge to the case at hand. Tom's suggestion that we do more with our lower level after we pushed out the back of the house just a bit was part of the great success we are finding now that we are living back in the house after a year out. I will admit that Tom can sometimes be a bit slow to follow up. Sometimes a second phone call or other urging is necessary to get the things you were promised. But that was a small price to pay for the comfort we felt with him. Tom never made us feel ignorant or silly in our thinking. I know that our project manager (himself a fabulous person well-reviewed by us elsewhere on this site) found Tom to be easy to work with, too. I never saw any tension in the project. Finally, at least when we used him, Tom was very reasonably priced compared to two other architects we considered.

**Comment from Kamm Architecture:**

> Thank you for your thoughtful review. It was a pleasure working with you and your family and we're very happy to know you're enjoying your renovated home!

> I had the pleasure of collaborating with Kamm Architecture on a new home in Rehoboth Beach, DE. For this project, Tom and Kelly and the rest of their team delivered a fully realized, contemporary home - from original concept drawings through to construction completion. In addition to their mastery of modern architecture, Kamm Architecture also provided leadership to the design and construction team to ensure their concepts would be reflected in the landscape, furnishings and in the overall quality of work.
>
> While Tom and Kelly were faithful to their design concept for the house, I also found them to be highly collaborative partners when addressing how the house and landscape interacted. I believe this balance - between being advocates for their concept and being open-minded and curious design partners - made for a highly successful finished product.

**Comment from Kamm Architecture:**

> Thank you Jennifer. We've enjoyed collaborating with you on this project!

> We worked with Kamm Architecture to help us with a whole house remodel on our center-hall colonial that looked like a time capsule from 1978. Tom listened to our ideas, was mindful of our budget, and really helped us look past what the house was to what it could be. Based on their suggestions, we knocked down walls, expanded the master bathroom, and updated an antiquated fireplace layout, thereby completely transforming a dated floor plan into an open living space that works for our family. Both Kelly and Tom were spot on with spatial and design considerations that were contemporary yet functional -- and not just the latest trends. Kamm was not the cheapest architecture firm we interviewed, but you definitely get what you pay for. We have used in-house consultants at design/build firms in the past, and believe there is no substitute for working with an architect when you really want to create a living space that inspires.

**Comment from Kamm Architecture:**

> Thank you! It was a pleasure working with you to help bring your home into the 21st century!

**★★★★★ — mehunker, July 2016**

> We engaged Kamm Architecture to redesign the first level of our historic row house. It turned out to be a VERY good decision. They transformed three small, dark, separate rooms (kitchen, family and dining room) into a light filled, open plan space that we love! The result was a new center of activity for our family and guests. It has truly changed the way we live in the house.
> Because this was our first renovation, we knew we needed an architect with lots of experience. In addition to coming up with great design concepts, the Kamm Architecture team was able to help us navigate the processes of bidding, permitting, and construction. They helped smooth out the inevitable bumps in the road and were always a lot of fun to work with. Can’t say enough good things about the process and results!

**Comment from Kamm Architecture:**

> Thank you! We enjoyed working with you guys and are happy you're pleased with your new space!

**★★★★★ — eshashaty, April 2016**

> We have been thoroughly pleased by our experience with Kamm Architecture. Not only are Tom and Kelly focused on beautiful design, they are also intent on hearing the needs of their customer. When we started discussing our project we were very anxious about cost and the impact to our neighbors. Kamm Architecture has been instrumental in troubleshooting these concerns, and we are looking forward to living in a redesigned space with a personal touch.
>
> Thank you Tom, Kelly and Andy (World's Best Intern!)

**Comment from Kamm Architecture:**

> Thank you so much. We enjoy working with you and your family!

**★★★★★ — UrbanVibe Real Estate Developers, Sept. 2014**

> The communication, response, detailing and problem solving abilities of Kamm Architecture all contribute to an outstanding collaboration of ideas for design excellence and construction success. The perpetual challenges faced by a real estate developer is comfortably managed by a disciplined and attentive approach exhibited by Kamm. They are a tremendous asset and solid team player to my company.

**★★★★ — AB/Urban Development LLC, July 2014**

> Brought them in to advice on a roof deck. Very creative, responsive and worked within my budget. Would recommend them highly.

**★★★★★ — 1820page, June 2014**

> Working with Tom and Kelly of Kamm Architecture has been a complete pleasure. While our project is not yet complete, we have been thoroughly impressed with their efforts and dedication through the design phase. The plans that they developed for us will transform our space in the most wonderful and unexpected ways. Tom and Kelly exceed our expectations at every turn, from design vision and creativity to responsiveness and professionalism. We could not be happier with our decision to work with them. I should add, too, that they have planned and prepared our remodel in DC while we are posted overseas in West Africa--no small feat. We recommend Kamm Architecture enthusiastically and without reservation.

**★★★★★ — Robert Clapper / Madden Creek Woodworking, Jan. 2014**

> Working with Tom as the cabinetmaker, my input and ideas were welcomed and a collaborative spirit was encouraged throughout the project. Detail and appreciation for quality materials made my job rewarding on all levels. Tom"s keen sense of clean contemporary style provided me with an opportunity to utilize my skills in sequencing "designer" veneers to produce casework for a whole house remodel.
> I hope to work with Tom in the future

**★★★★★ — textures4, Dec. 2013**

> When I contracted with Tom to do a total house remodel I had a number of ideas of the look and mediums I wanted to use, but little vocabulary to convey my ideas. Tom immediately grasped my contemporary tastes and was able to expand on them to create an amazing concept. His eye for detail made the difference between a great look and a spectacular coherent one. He worked with me on staying within budget, maintained a very good professional relationship with the builder and subcontractors which made for an enjoyable project for all. I cannot say enough about his eye for design and his creativity using mediums such as concrete, copper and stone. The project was a wonderful experience and I loved the process of design as much as the outcome. Pictures would say it all, but I am not very good at indoor photos.

Our client loves to entertain and opens his house for large gatherings. He requested a home with a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, and a pool as its focus. When not entertaining, he also wanted a house that was cozy enough for him and his best friend (a golden retriever) to relax in private. - Description: This project involved the complete interior renovation of an existing 1940’s colonial home in Washington, DC. The design offers a reconfiguration of space that maintains focus on the owner’s Asian art and furniture, while creating a unified, informal environment for the large and active family. The open plan of the first floor is divided by a new core, which collects all of the service functions at the center of the plan and orchestrates views between spaces.
