Our goal was to bring our house into the 21st century with a new kitchen and family room while keeping the old feel and look of the house. We wanted the addition to be seamless -- to look like it had always been there from the outside and the inside, too. > > Since this was a "kitchen-centric" project, we started with the design and layout of that space and everything else followed including a family room, a mudroom, a powder room, an upstairs bedroom, and a free-stading garage. > > We had some requirements from the start and all of them were met or expanded: We wanted a large island with five stools -- one for each of our kids. We wanted a combination of marble and a counter surface that was user-friendly and could take more abuse. We wanted two ovens and a dishwasher as well as half drawer dishwasher. We wanted a larger refrigerator and freezer for a family of 7 and pantry for food storage. We wanted to connect the traditional dining room to the new space with a butler's pantry that would give us a space for entertaining. The mudroom needed space for a bench, lots of hooks, and 5 cubbies for basket storage.
