**★★★★★ — Andrew Jacobs, June 2020**

> Stephen, Ruth, Kathy and team did an amazing job on our hamptons home renovation project and, several years ago, our apartment renovation. They were so thoughtful in considering how we would use the spaces and including features that would maximize space and functionality and improve the flow of the space (and were excellent in working within our budget constraints). They are also very organized project managers who effectively worked with our contractors, and have wonderful design sense and attention to detail. They have always been a pleasure to work with, and we recommend them highly. In all our projects with them, we have been extraordinarily pleased with the end result.

**Comment from Ruth Gyuse Architecture Design:**

> Thanks so much for this review, Andrew! We love working with you and your family. :)

**★★★★★ — Mona Baird, Jan. 2019**

> Stephen Potters Architects made a stressful project feel seamless. They spent endless hours perfecting the plans to ensure that all of our wishes and needs were incorporated in our renovation. The created the home we dreamed of. They are an incredibly professional team. Stephen and Ruth leave nothing to chance. They always go the extra mile to make sure the construction and the design are of the best quality. This is the second renovation I have completed with them and I highly recommend them.

**★★★★★ — russell955, March 2018**

> We did a gut 4000sf renovation with Potters Architects and it was a seamless process. They were on site multiple times per week, checking and making sure things were getting done properly and timely. Even more importantly, when any problems arose, they handled it professionally and rectified the issue. Highly recommend without hesitancy.

> My husband and I have, for some years, been making a transition from our life as university professors at Duke University to retirement in NYC, the birthplace for us both. While we had been longing to return to NYC on and off for a long time, it was nevertheless a daunting change after some 40 years at Duke in North Carolina.
>
> I have always cared deeply about my homes, at the same time that I have found it extremely challenging to find the time to achieve the high standard of design and quality of workmanship that I so desired. Stephen Potters was referred to us by a colleague, and we have now renovated two consecutive apartments with him and his team. What is so extraordinary is that in both cases, the renovation process was painless - actually enjoyable, and done while we were living in North Carolina.
>
> For the first apartment, Stephen truly transformed a small wreck of an apartment into a very lovely and comfortable space that we cherished. Our son, a performing artist, was so fascinated with Stephen's creative work that they became good friends; I, in addition, was truly grateful for his careful oversight and his thoughtfulness in regard to all decisions. The process was such a pleasure that I knew I had a trustworthy partner in hand when we were ready to move to a larger space.
>
> For our second apartment, my son and I worked closely with Stephen and his colleague Ruth Gyuse. Ruth, like Stephen, is a most delightful person, and the second renovation was even more fun than the first, with equally compelling results. Stephen and Ruth are so kind and respectful, so hard working and engaged, that by the time the work was done (on time and to perfection!), I felt like they were part of my family.
>
> Stephen Potters Architects provided our family with a beautiful NYC home for our retirement, and an equally positive renovation experience in another, prior apartment as we worked through our transition back to the City. These life transitions bring tense times for families, and I can not communicate strongly enough what a difference it made to my family to have such a creative, competent, and caring team to take us through these changes.

- [Pelham](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pelham-pj-vj~7502624)
  - Location: Village of Pelham, NY
  - Photos: 17
  - Description: For this turn of the century house, refreshing a fading palette and removing a few walls went a long way towards updating a lackluster flow. New built in library shelving, punched up with an energetic wallpaper opened up the family room, making it the new center of the home. We stripped down old granite oak paneling and wood fireplace mantels, and refreshed them with a new coat of wax and fresh marble surrounds to create contrast. An old kitchen received a new backsplash and counters while upsta…

  - Description: The original rambling layout for this three-bedroom apartment was streamlined to create a series of curated rooms, each opening into the next, starting from the glittering entry foyer and wrapping through to an expansive living room, dining room and kitchen. The custom cabinetry stands out in each room, forming desks, shelves, built in beds and vanities. A dark brooding navy-blue den, lilac marble tiles in the main bathroom, artfully selected punches of colour, varied and playful wall coverings…

  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 34
  - Description: For this full floor apartment in a classic loft building in Tribeca, the entire space was gutted and the new layout designed for a continuous flow from one side of the apartment to the other. Entered through a series of wood clad portals, the home is anchored by an open concept kitchen set in the middle of the common areas. Light pours in on three sides, with uninterrupted views broken only by floor to ceiling metal and glass panels that allow for privacy in the family room. Built in seating cre…

  - Location: Sagaponack, NY

  - Description: We reconfigured this 1980s saltbox by adding a second story addition that creates a volume cantilevered over a new entrance to the front door. A new extension at the dining room floods the kitchen with natural light and frames the backyard vista through a dramatic double height window. Silvery mahogany planks at the rear deck step down seamlessly into a slate gray brick patio, creating ample room for outdoor living. Repainting the house charcoal grey transformed a dated façade and tied the vario…

  - Description: An oddly shaped collection of shingled volumes needed some relief which we brought in by extending a ship-lapped mudroom at the entrance and adding dormers to the garage to create a guest suite. At the rear yard, a new pool, patio and second floor roof deck create outdoor rooms in a newly imagined landscape by the owners. A complete reconfiguration of the interiors introduces a double height window to create a year round sunroom, and an open kitchen and cozy media room at the core of the plan. H…

  - Description: Meticulous details highlight the workmanship of local artisans in this serene first floor of a row building in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Seamlessly matching parquet floors, custom wood shutters and an open concept kitchen elevate the atmosphere in the common living area . The bathroom shines with an exquisite glass tile mosaic installation in the shower. A custom sliding shoji screen separates out a study, carved off the alcove on the hallway, while a new glass door opening off the main bedroo…

  - Description: Brightness and joy capture the spirit of this one-bedroom jewel box of an apartment. We opened up the original kitchen and dining room and added a long slim island to create a central spine down the combined living space. Built in shelving doubles as a dining area and TV nook, maximizing every corner of this compact apartment. A curated selection of white oak, brass and stone creates an elegant, inviting atmosphere. - [West Village Duplex](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/west-village-duplex-pj-vj~1821589)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: The project brief was to reorganize the top floor of this West Village duplex to create a master suite and powder room where lackluster common areas overlooked the lower-floor open kitchen and dining area. We designed a welded blackened steel wall panel system, with antique mirrors at the exterior side and custom hand-painted silk wallpaper at the interior bedroom side. A tiny powder room stolen from under a stairway celebrates the building’s original red brick walls. (This project was completed…

  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: A long terrace runs the length of this 1960s apartment, offering an expanse of windows along the living areas. We designed a similarly long lighting cove that wraps the interior wall of the common area; emphasizing the open flow and creating interest at an otherwise low ceiling. Collaborating closely with the owners, we installed sleek modern Poggenpohl shelving, cabinets, and kitchen millwork in the common areas. We also custom fabricated precise gridded wall paneling to hide deep closets in th…

  - Location: New York, NY

  - Description: Located in a 1950s post-war apartment complex, we collaborated closely with the owners and designer to create a warm, approachable mid-century modern space, complete with bleached oak cabinets, walnut-hued wood floors, and chemetal countertops along the window built-in millwork. The living areas were opened up for better flow around a magnificent central console that backs up to the kitchen. A dropped cove around the perimeter walls unifies and lights the ceiling plane while providing display li…

  - Location: New York, NY

  - Description: For this perfect one-bedroom unit in a classic Emory Roth Park Avenue building, every inch of space was considered to accommodate storage, display, and maximum comfort for two retiring professors downsizing from a large home. The highlight of the living area is a custom shelving unit designed by Stephen Potters, with a central panel that hides a TV and well-proportioned cubbies for art and books. - [Upper West Side Classic](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/upper-west-side-classic-pj-vj~5493742)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: For this gut renovation of a classic-seven apartment in a celebrated Emery Roth building, we collaborated with the designer and owners to preserve old, and design new, art deco-inspired details while improving the flow for entertaining and living. Highlights include custom plaster ceilings, acid-etched glass doors, clerestory windows to bring natural light into an inner hallway, a long and elegant jack-and-jill master bathroom, and metal kitchen cabinets custom-fabricated in Brooklyn to seamless…
- [Yorkville Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/yorkville-residence-pj-vj~5494062)
  - Location: New York, NY
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: A previously combined pre-war apartment in Yorkville required a complete untangling of a maze of hallways and bedrooms to create the open, light-filled spaces requested by the owners. The resulting enfilade of common rooms brings order and direction, with ample space for a multigenerational family to roam free, yet maintain distinct functions within the adjacent spaces and discreet living quarters. A true collaboration between us and the owners, we selected and supervised the interior furnishing…
- [East Hampton Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/east-hampton-residence-pj-vj~1822320)
  - Location: East Hampton, NY
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Known fondly as the pink house, for this home in East Hampton we added a generous vaulted addition, complete with a cupola over the kitchen island, a charming crooked staircase to the second floor, and a breakfast room offering sweeping views of the back yard landscaping. A fruitful collaboration with the interior designer resulted in the installation of a vintage pickled oak living room rescued from an estate in Rhinebeck, a built in curiosity cabinet in the dining room and a rich palette of st…

  - Description: Expanding the kitchen footprint posed plumbing challenges, notably with the kitchen meter obstructing a wall slated for removal. Coordinating with Con Edison, we safely relocated the meter. Installing a new washer/dryer combo in a tight space required meticulous planning to run utilities effectively. Transforming a prewar maids' bathroom into a contemporary space, we installed a mechanical fan for ventilation. Lowering the powder bathroom ceiling facilitated vent installation for the washer/drye…
