Beautiful kitchen! A: I didn't supply the flooring, but will try to find an answer for you! **Q: Help needed for kitchen layout!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We moved into this house a few months ago and are trying to figure out how to best redo the kitchen. We still want seating in the kitchen but do not need a separate table since the dining room is right next to the kitchen too. Our current thought is a large island with seating at one end (see picture), and while the dimensions are a little tight, it seems doable for us. Our budget isn't big but we are capable of doing the work ourselves, so moving gas, water, electrical aren't out of the question. It's just a matter of how much time we want to spend on this project. Please let me know your thoughts or if there is some other layout that would be better. Thank you! A: Given 1.5" overhang on the countertop for the island, it looks like Kim's walkway dimensions are accurate. A couple of points that need attention - figuring out how the island countertop is to be supported at the seating area, and whether the refrigerator location is the best, given that small space. The basement stairway does make for a serious challenge. **Q: Cabinet layout/elevation feedback** *(in Kitchens)* Hello, We're really digging into the planning stages of our kitchen renovation and I'm looking for some feedback on our plans. My concerns... I'm not entirely sold on the cabinet/rollout shelves in our island. Especially seeing how our pantry will be rollouts and I don't own a standing mixer so no need for one of those cabinet lifts. I'm thinking it should be converted to drawers. It looks like the eat in/dining area will be about 11' x 16' not including hutch/pantry and walkways. We envisioned a round table that seats 6 - would that be too tight? There is no other dining space besides island. Maybe make the pantry/hutch only 18" deep? Do you think the PO spice rack and tray dividers are redundant? Our designer suggested something else (can't recall what) but my DH really favors symmetry. However, I would hate to waste space. We generate a lot of recycling- is a 21" garbage pullout large enough for both garbage and recycling? Should we think about putting a separate trash pullout in the island? phew, that's a lot. A: Even though I'm typically an advocate for more big drawers in base cabinets, I usually try to include at least one wide base cabinet with height-adjustable roll-outs. That way if you want to move the upper tray higher, you'd have room for taller items (stock-pots?) on the lower tray, and perhaps lids on the upper. The flexibility can come in handy... you don't get that with drawers as you're locked into the cabinet opening size at time of fabrication. **Q: Island slightly too large for most countertops- should i make smaller?** *(in Kitchens)* My island currently requires a countertop slab measuring 135" x 60.5". This length eliminates quartz products and most natural stone without having a seam. I definitely don't want a seam. My island has a 33" sink in the middle, two dishwashers on either side, and then 2 21" base cabinets on the ends. We had planned for one of the 21" base cabinets to be drawers and the other to be a trash pullout. The paneled "ends" of the island measure 3" each. Total length of cabinetry is 129" and fabricator says slab must be 135" long. In order to shorten my island a few inches, I could consider reducing the 21" base cabinets to 18", which would reduce the overall island length by 6". If I do this, then I should only need a 129" x 60.5" slab. I would have more options with this size including Cambria quartz and more natural stone options as well. My question is whether 18" will be adequate for the trash pullout and drawer stack or would it really be much better to keep the 21"? I was going to keep silverware in the drop drawer of the drawer stack. If I keep the 21" base cabinets, then countertops will either have to have a seem or a giant slab of natural stone (which is hard to find). What is ideal size for trash pullout between 18" and 21"? Will I really miss the extra 3" in the drawers? A: With several manufacturers, the waste bins in an 18" and 21" cabinet will be the same size. It's just the wood or metal platform they're mounted into that changes in width. So depending on the manufacturer you may not be sacrificing anything. **Q: Cleaning my new kitchen question- white cabinets???** *(in Kitchens)* Loving our new kitchen and love the brightness of my white cabinets. However, as expected, they look dirty quickly. I'm trying to train my kids and husband to touch just the drawer pulls/handles but I'm not always successful ;) I'd like to give them a good wipe down. What's the recommended way to clean painted cabinets? Hot water with vinegar? or a little dish soap? Magic Eraser? They're only 6 months old so not super dirty or grimy... they just don't look as good as the did the day of install ;) Along the same lines, I'm wondering about my new baseboards. I'd imagine I'd wipe them down the same way I do the cabinets? A: You don't mention whether your cabinets were from a small custom shop or a factory-finish manufacturer. I'd reach out to the manufacturer for their recommendation to stay within warranty guidelines, unless these were painted on site. **Q: buffet cabinet depth? To reduce or not?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi. Per designer drawing the buffet cabinets ( between the two 24 inch deep pantries ) were drawn as 19 inches reduced depth. The contractor thinks it is a waste of labor & cost for me to modify cabinets, as well as negative by losing usable space & might look odd if all the other bases are 24 inch deep. The dining table (66x36) will be placed perpendicular to the buffet area. My concern is that countertop will run over the depth of the pantries & stick out making the space appear smaller. Also since there will be no uppers (only open shelving or art work) that the 24 depth will appear to deep. That's a solution I use frequently if the line charges extra for a depth modification.
