They removed the texture and refinished the ceiling beautifully. The floors have been restored to their original wide pine plank splendor, and the walls are smoothly painted after removing old wall paper. It is a gorgeous room now. A: looks like the stone wall and walkway could use a good power-washing. **Q: Painting Exterior Wood Window Sashes** *(in Paint)* We had a window repair company repair some old windows which included installing six new wood window sashes. They were Anderson primed casement windows. I researched paints on the internet and it appeared latex paints were okay to use for exterior painting. I used a top quality Behr exterior latex paint with primer to paint the windows. Now the windows won't close. I then contacted Anderson and their care sheets say to use oil-based primers only. Have I made an irreparable mistake? A: It's not an irreparable mistake. It could be that the paint hasn't fully cured yet, which just requires you removing them from the tracks and giving them more time to dry, 48 hours for most latex paints. If you painted the edges of the windows that run along the tracks, you'll need to remove that paint by hand-sanding the edges with a medium grit sandpaper. Side Note- A paint and primer in one is kind of like shampoo and conditioner in one, it's not the same as using each separately, nor does it work as effectively. **Q: Old house with challenging paint issues** *(in Paint)* We bought a house last year and are finally getting around to remodeling. The two kids rooms were painted by the kids themselves. One is gloss pink and purple. The other is gloss red and blue with chrome/silver trim. The red and blue room was occupied by a child with anger issues. It has fist sized holes beaten into the walls in 5 spots. There is also one spot where there are letters carved into the wall, but not through the surface of the texture. The letters are only knife blade wide and you have to get the light just right to see them. There could be many more, who knows? Here's a picture of the red and blue room...I have a couple questions. When the holes are fixed in the walls, how do you match the texture? I would much prefer no texture at all, but apparently I'm in the minority on that. Smooth walls just seem cleaner to me. Anyway... Can gloss paint be painted with anything? We want a light, pastel yellow for the final color. I was thinking Kilz to cover the deep colors, but I walked out of Lowe's with BIN Shellac primer. Can the wall carvings be painted over to cover or does that need to be filled somehow? And if filling is needed, then are we back to matching texture? There are drips on the walls. How do you fix those added texture issues? \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ Meanwhile in another room...The original master bedroom has popcorn ceilings. The popcorn is coming down so that won't be a concern. The owner was a smoker, but the smoke does not seem to have affected the pink/purple or red/blue rooms. There's a pocket door from the MBR to the bathroom, so I'm afraid the smoke might be deep in the walls there. In reading old posts here about covering smoked rooms it seems the gurus of the day recommended using Dirtex to clean the walls first. My wife washed the walls with vinegar (at our Realtor's suggestion), and that did nothing against the smell. But she did not wash the popcorn, so getting rid of the popcorn might solve everything. We were hoping the BIN would be okay to use now without further washing. There was a carpet in that room, but we had it removed down to the concrete slab. A: The shellac primer should do the trick for addressing the nicotine stains (make sure to use a good respirator and provide adequate ventilation, it's stinky stuff). But before that step, I would recommend getting a good pole sander to scuff all the walls and then tack cloth off the dust to ensure good adhesion of the primer coat. The paint will not cover the knife cuts, so you'll need to patch those areas also. I like lazy\_gardens advice for matching the texture but if you have trouble with that product, you could try joint compound as it's a little easier to work with and dries firmer. Another option, depending on how much texture there is on the walls, is to get a thicker roller nap (maybe 3/4 inch) and spot-finish the patched areas a couple times with the thick nap to build a paint film to match the existing walls. Nicotine is a tough obstacle and even completely redoing the room may not entirely eliminate the odor unfortunately, but it's worth trying before ripping out all the drywall. A: A good reading chair with ottoman **Q: Exterior Paint Color / Arch. Improvements - Recommendations?** *(in Paint)* In the Spring, it will be time to re-paint our lake house. The bright white trim (and garage doors) must go, and we are strongly considering something other than the current barn-red. The home is in a heavily-wooded area, lots of evergreen and rhododendron. Any advice on color selection and other architectural improvements would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! A: Based on the color of your driveway and your roofing, I would lean towards a complementary color to those, such as a stoney/earthy grey for the siding. The trim is a little bit more difficult of a decision, maybe a light grey, but ditching the white is probably a good idea based on the surrounding landscape. I would also address the exposed foundation and make that disappear a bit, something neutral and in the same color wheel. Although, 2 coats will increase the lifespan and let you pick exactly what you want so it really comes down to what your intentions are for the property. Do you plan to live there for more than 5 years? If so, go for the color change and enjoy.
