### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Lydia Reed-Guertin, May 2023**

> Nathan Dishington, owner of Jensen Hus undoubtedly deserves a 5-star rating on Houzz for the orchestration and delivery of a highly technical and challenging kitchen and bath renovation. The project was multi-faceted, involving the relocation of the basement stairs, structural modifications and squaring the walls, ceilings, and floors in a 105-year-old home. No small feat!
> Nate was extremely responsive in project management, communicating regular updates, and coordinated seamlessly with our kitchen designer and all the trades. The result was truly spectacular. We now have a highly functioning kitchen and bath complete with a huge island and vaulted ceiling and new basement stair location. We could not be happier with this stunning transformation.

> Nathan is a true professional with talent in design and construction. We are completing a whole house renovation with new floors, systems, lighting, kitchen and bathrooms. He helped us design our project inside and out, listening to our desires and taste. He has taken us from start to finish and is responsive and works to make sure we are happy with every detail. We give Nathan our highest recommendation for any project.

**★★★★★ — HU-318124757, Sept. 2020**

> I worked with Nate and his team over 2 years on a massive renovation project. He converted our 2 family into a gorgeous single family and was there with us every step of the way, from design, to getting the plans approved by the town to the actual work. Always responsive, detailed and accountable in his work, Dishington construction was a pleasure to work with.

**★★★★★ — D G, Feb. 2019**

> Our friends and family had to stage an intervention because all we would talk about is how much we loved our experience with Dishington Construction. We used Dishington Construction to remodel our kitchen, master bathroom, laundry room, deck, living room, hallway, dining room and den. Our experience was overwhelmingly positive. Nate is really in the business of building trust by doing exactly what he says all the time. He has created a truly wonderful customer experience by using modern on-line based project management practices, professional communication, and a transparent specification and budgeting process.
>
> The quality of work is outstanding. Every sub-contractor we interacted with had great relationships with Nate and followed the methodology he set out. Our house was cleaned as much as possible every night, and every effort was made for us to be able to function during the construction. Sub-contractors had clear instructions and procedures to follow when they had questions or encountered unforeseen problems. Nate was at the site often, solving and preventing problems. When issues arose, Nate provided several solutions based on our goals and budget and let us decide what to do. Also, there were virtually no “down days” where we were waiting for sub-contractors to finish work, as Nate had organized everything so that the project finished as scheduled.
>
> We were lucky enough that our also wonderful designer referred Nate to us, and we enthusiastically recommend Dishington Construction for any project. We will definitely be using Nate in the future.

**★★★★★ — Betty R, Jan. 2019**

> We have undergone several construction projects on our house with various contractors and if we ever do anything else, I would go straight to Nathan Dishington. Communication is key in any project, and Nathan always responds in a timely manner to any of our questions. He is straightforward with descriptions of the work, pros and cons, and explanations of how the work will be done. Nathan finds creative solutions for tricky problems and suggests practical alternatives that were in keeping with the design-related style. He works incredibly hard and the results reflect his craftmanship, creativity, and care for the project and the client! We love our new master bathroom and the updated hall bathroom he did. Thank you Nathan!

**★★★★★ — Jeff G, Sept. 2018**

> I would strongly recommend Dishington Construction. From the first day of site preparation to the completion of the project, Nate demonstrated a dedication to quality work. He identified issues with my design choices if they arose, explained workarounds needed for my very old house, jumped in and corrected issues with subs (even when it would have been much easier to move on) and ensured all work was of high quality. Best of all, he finished on time and on budget.

**★★★★★ — karen laliberte, March 2018**

> Nathan did an excellent job on our renovations. He is responsible, professional and true to his word. He carefully protected and respected our home. We did the kitchen, 2 bathrooms and new flooring in a bedroom. It was a lot of space and about 4 months. The work was exceptional, Nate was on the job when needed and hired responsible, talented sub contractors. He was also willing to find other contractors for issues that were unforeseen. He has good ideas, listens to my ideas and I would use him again - and will be. He is very knowledgeable and a talented contractor. I have used others in the past and would not re hire them. Nate will be working with us again and again.

**★★★★★ — Norman Taylor, March 2017**

> Nate oversaw the extensive 3 floor gut conversion of our 2 family home into a single family home, all the way from the design build phase to completion. We most appreciated Nate's cheery disposition and responsiveness to questions and concerns. He is a stickler for detail, and uncompromising on quality. We recommend him, without reservation to any of our friends who are looking to do a renovation project.

**★★★★★ — eric\_vassall, Feb. 2017**

> We hired Dishington construction about 5 years ago to do are siding on our house and some deck work. The team did an amazing job on our house and they were efficient and timely in completing the job. They also went above and beyond on some of the work and stayed within budget. We would definitely rehire his group in the future to do work on our house.

**★★★★★ — Elizabeth Lemons, Feb. 2017**

> I hired Nate to remodel my basement. It was a great experience. Nate and his team did an outstanding job. The quality of work exceeded my expectations. They were doing such a great job I expanded the project to include re-siding the exterior.
>
> I plan to hire Nate again this year to update my sunroom.
>
> In addition to the high quality of his work, Nate is an outstanding communicator. I was kept well informed every step of the project ..there were never any surprises.

**★★★★★ — Bruce Hanlon, Feb. 2017**

> Every aspect of our kitchen overhaul was handled professionally, on time, and under budget by Nate Dishington and his crew at Dishington Construction. Nate took our kitchen down to the studs and rebuilt it to become the kitchen of our dreams. I highly recommend Nate for any home project you're considering.

**★★★★★ — Patricia Geller, Jan. 2017**

> Started with an idea, added an architect and went looking for a contractor who shared my vision. I now have a gorgeous art studio with a built in bamboo counter and storage space, incredible light and huge sliding doors. The space is magical as is the rest of the project. I live in an old house so many issues arose but they were all handled. Liked the crew, particularly the men who managed the project. Nate was aware of financial considerations and gave sound advise about when to cut corners and when going with the more expensive alternative made sense over time. It was a big, long project and I couldn't be happier.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Can short stair treads be fixed?** *(in Remodeling)*

We have a raised ranch and the stairs that go to the lower level have short (9") treads.
This is what they look like without the carpet.

I would like to make them safer and easier to go up and down by having longer treads. Is that possible or would the stairs need to be reconfigured?
The house was built in 1971 and I assume it was up to code then but not anymore.
Here are a few pictures to get a feel for the situation.

Same view with carpet.

Looking down from landing.

Looking down from 1st floor entry
Looking over railing in entry

Entry way view

Assuming I can do something to to fix this who would be the correct person for the job, a carpenter?

A: The solution to a longer tread run will be to change the landing to a winder step. basically cutting that step in half diagonally. That additional riser will make all the difference. Yes, it will require a good carpenter and the stairs will need to be completely rebuilt. 1 day demo, 1 - 2 days frame, 4-5 days for finish. Plus plaster and paint. Depending on where u are in the country and finishes this is a $4k-$12k+ project, but would also give you an opportunity to upgrade that old style railing.

**Q: what are the dimensions?** *(in Photo Questions)*

what are the dimensions of this room? you made it look lovely!!

A: shoot me an email and I'll send you a floor plan nathan@jensenhus.com

**Q: spray foam quote too $$$ use XP’s or eps?** *(in Building a Home)*

Insulating the interior of the walkout basement walls. Finishing the basement and want to insulate and air seal the walls. We used 2” XP’s in the rim joists should we use the same treatment in the stud cavities since spray foam is too expensive? I’m in climate zone 4
Thank you

A: buy once, cry once. spend the $$$ on the closed cell spray foam. superior in all ways, especially air sealing which is critical.

**Q: 90 degree turn in duct over range hood? or move the range?** *(in Appliances)*

Hello Houzzers,
Question - see below for the current design for our kitchen reno. The deck is behind the wall where the sink will be. Hence the range hood duct work will have to go up the wall and then make a 90 degree turn to go out to the deck. We are going to have a 36" Bluestar range and a 750Cfm zephyr range hood. Do you think the range hood efficacy will be lowered due to the 90 degree turn? Would you switch the range to the side where the sink is right now? It would cost more $$$ because our current kitchen has the same configuration as the sketch so no pipes etc would have to be moved. Advice please! thanks so much!

A: As long as you have the space to run the duct work then you're good. Don't change the design.

**Q: Please comment on my proposed kitchen layout** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are looking at remodeling the kitchen, we are still in the layout mode. The original kitchen had a few pinch points and bad work flow, we are trying to remedy those. I tend to like to cook and entertain and most gatherings end in my kitchen. So I want to have a space that works well. The kitchen has upper cabinets as well that I didn't draw. The tall cabinet to the left of the garage door is a microwave and oven tall boy. The dishwasher is to the right of the sink.

That is the original kitchen.

Here is our proposed layout

We are considering removing the small wall next to the Bar sink (lower right hand side) but that is the only ceiling joist that ends on that wall and there are pipes from the upstairs bathroom that run through that wall.

A: Nooooooooooooooo!

**Q: Windows.. to grid or not to grid?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have only tonight to make the final decision and keep going back forth. Do we want window grids or not? What is your opinion? We are paying extra for the black windows and I want them to make an impact with the white house, but with the black shutters, maybe grids aren't needed?

A: Do you ever ask if you should get grids in your car windows??? I rest my case
