We recently purchased this cottage and the basement is sterile and freezing cold. I’m struggling with how to decorate and carpet/rug with the awkward layout (fireplace right at the bottom of the stairs, walkout in the middle of the room). I’ve never bought a rug in my life so I’m very confused with what to do here. Long term I would tear out the tile and put carpet or hardwood but that’s not any time soon. The rest of the cottage is warm so I’m looking for a rustic, cozy look down here but don’t even know how to start. I’d like to try to keep the couches if possible but I’m open to tossing everything else. Was thinking of doing a combo pool/air hockey or ping pong table on the far side. Would appreciate any tips. Thanks! A: What a lovely room and how fortunate to have this extra living space. Cottages are my jam so forgive me for going a bit overboard here. Unfortunately your existing sofas are just too large for the space. Something smaller like the sectional shown below gives you a bit more flexibility. You can place it against the stairs so that you take advantage of the lake view or buy the reverse model and place against the window which would be more balanced with your fireplace. The round coffee table allows for easier traffic flow (no bruised shins) and a great surface for playing board games. The log rack positioned to the left of the fireplace would help visually centre it in the room (although it could be a gas fireplace). Hanging the mirror on the staircase wall reflects both the light and the view back into the room. A sisal rug pulls together the living area and warms up the chilly tile flooring. Drapes will help keep the room cosy at night. An entertainment unit against the far wall in the games area creates a focal point, a place to sit while watching the games awaiting a turn as well as storage for board games and books. Thanks for indulging me and have fun! **Q: Large Quartz Slabs** *(in Design Dilemma)* Does anyone know of a quartz manufacturer that has makes slabs 70 inchs tall or more. Our island is needs a slab at least 70x96. we were going to use quartize but its getting to be very expensive because of the amount of counter tops we need. If you know the colors that are available that would be great! A: I agree with the above poster about adding wood to your island as a potential solution. I would add it where you'll have seating. Quartz is 15% cooler than the air around it, which can make it uncomfortable for resting your arms which is what people tend to do when seated at an island. So adding the wood here, similar to the picture shown below, could be a great option. **Q: Mixing glass and spindle baluster in split entry way. Would you?** *(in Remodeling)* Hi all! I'm having yet another design dilemma ... this time regarding the railings for the split entryway at the back of the house. Here's a quick image as to what it currently looks like: The kitchen island and walls will do directly in the center of the main floor. There's a space to the right of the entry that will be open. For now a play area for the kids but eventually a reading bench or breakfast table. For that right railing (left side) I was thinking of doing it in a frameless glass w/ black hardware. And the railings on the stairs would be simple black spindles w/ white oak handrail (same that is throughout the house). Would mixing one side w/ glass railings and the other with spindles look strange? Here's another picture of the space plus a SUPER ROUGH sketch of what it's supposed to look like. Would you keep it like this? Or make them all spindles? (All glass is a not an option). Too many times through this renovation an idea that seems great in my head has not worked out. So I'm BEGGING for your advice! A: What about something a bit more contemporary such as shown below, combined with the glass? **Q: would this area rug match my couch/living room?** *(in Home Decorating)* Currently trying to find an area rug that would go well in my living room. We found one on wayfair we think might work. The couch is the jollene sectional from Macy’s in navy blue. I’ll attach a picture of the living room. A: I find adding pieces to a mood board always helps to visualize how furniture and decor will go together in a room. Here's the rug with your sofa and a few accent pieces. There is a hint of grey in the rug so add pillows that include both grey and navy. The pattern in the rug is very subtle so you can go with stronger patterns in your pillows - a geometric, a solid and either a textured fabric or floral all play nicely together. An accent chair with a grey cushion will help pull it all together as well. Hope that helps! **Q: Unique + useful design features to consider?** *(in Remodeling)* What are some unique and/or useful design aspects you've incorporated into your home that you enjoy? I am finalizing the design stage for my full-home remodel. I'm mainly interested in features applicable to the kitchen, master bath and laundry and/or mudroom, but any suggestions are welcome. For example, I'm speaking of things like: Sweepovac dustpan system under kitchen cabinet Built-in or roll-out spice rack Using pull-out drawers in lower cabinets instead of standard shelving Pot filler USB outlets Foot pedal activated faucet Let me know what options you have, like, or should consider. A: Plan your recycling needs - paper, soft plastic, hard plastic, compost, etc....It looks like two drawers under the kitchen sink but they are actually one drawer holding tall bins for the recycling. I used IKEA cabinet boxes with custom fronts.
