> Yet again I needed Alan’s guidance. What beautiful rooms he helped create to entertain my guests! I needed the correct scale of furniture for my living room because my couch was toooo big. The new bar piece in the dining room is very unique and attracts attention from the foyer.

**★★★★★ — Wilson Lighting, May 2019**

> We are a lighting and home decor resource that has been in business since 1975. We have had the pleasure to work with Alan Karlin Design in the Overland Park, KS area. Through their up-to-date knowledge of design, they are able to provide clients with great options to fit their needs, while maintaining their budget. They know the current trends of the industry, but are able to work within their clients style, which you can see from their work. Alan Karlin Design is a joy to work with and we highly recommend them with great confidence!

**★★★★★ — ReeceNichols, Aug. 2016**

> I worked with Alan Karlin on purchasing new chairs for my dining room. I was lost for
> what I wanted for the room and Alan offered fabulous ideas at various price ranges. Alan Karlin is a talented designer and a consummate professional. He worked with me on my small project yet was treated as if I was spending thousands. I will continue to recommend Alan and am looking for to my next project.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> Ellen gave me great direction when she explained her desires and needs. I was so happy to help her pull together the finishing touches to make the dining room great. Thank you, Ellen, for always recommending me!

**★★★★★ — Karyn Clewes Zaborny, June 2016**

> I have worked with Alan Karlin Design for years - work has ranged from mini projects in my home to full scale renovations.....from basic consultation on color, placement/layout and purchases in existing rooms to consultation on large renovation projects (room additions, and complete room remodels/renovations). Two years ago we added a significant room and patio onto an existing home and Alan gave us advice that made significant, positive differences in the final product (ceiling, exterior architecture, room layout, contents etc.) in addition to decor within the room itself. Alan and his staff are extremely professional, easy to work with and listen to the client's interests and preferences and provide wonderful feedback and advice that is in line with my own personal tastes and budget. Each time we have worked together the ideas brought forward have included various options and we have always landed on something suggested. We have most recently worked together on room redecoration of existing rooms in addition to a complete Master Bathroom renovation/addition (project listed here) - from idea to selection of materials to layout of room. I Highly recommend Alan and his staff to help on projects of all size.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> It has been a lot of fun to work on the Zaborny home. Soon after they moved in, we started tackling the project list. The latest bathroom remodel is a real winner & the addition off the kitchen was another fun endeavor. Yet, the newly updated dining room might be top on my list of favorite spaces :)

**★★★★★ — Randy Hamm, May 2016**

> I have used Alan Karlin Design before, but this kitchen remodel was the largest project together in terms of cost and scope. They chose or helped choose all the major elements of the remodel, including counter top, appliances, sink, windows, window coverings, lighting and paint. They worked with the contractor to determine the best way to open up the kitchen to the family room, by removing a wall. Their recommendations were all spot on and were perfect for our house and taste. They took our input, but also guided us along the correct path to a beautiful new kitchen and living area. In addition, everything was complete within the scheduled time and within budget. I would highly recommend them for any design job, large or small.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> I always like working on projects with Randy and Tom. We opened up this space and lightened everything up to showcase the Fiestaware collection!

**★★★★★ — Barbara Furgason, May 2016**

> I have known Alan for many years, and used him for many projects.
> He has designed rooms, picked furniture and accessories, chosen paint colors (even the outside of our house recently), and collaborated with other workers as to what I wanted. I trust his judgement, and he makes the "look" I am hoping for, happen! He is very honest and respectful of my budget! I have referred him to several thankful friends!

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> You can check out the latest updates on our page at the Norwood House. I always enjoy bringing the layered and traditional French design to life in this home!

**★★★★★ — HU-881024, May 2016**

> I love this man. He is delightful to work with and seems to find the perfect items for me. I have ordered a few things sight unseen and am always happy with my purchases. I have referred Alan to many of my friends. We all have different styles and taste and our homes reflect us - not him.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> This is so sweet - but just the proof that fun clients who share their ideas and excitement always get me to do my best work!

**★★★★★ — millspaugh27, March 2016**

> We have used Alan Karlin Design since 2004 and highly recommend him for all your designing needs. He designed our living spaces, bedrooms and basement - everything but our garage. Our last project was our master bathroom. He stayed within our planned budget, the contractor was great fixing something that I broke weeks after he had finished.
> Alan has the ability to combine the wants & needs of both my husband and myself and incorporate them into the finished project leaving us both happy with the outcome - we never argue over a design if we disagree we let Alan decide because we trust his talent, his amazing gift.
> If you hire Alan Karlin design you will not be disappointed with the finished project.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> Trusting and loyal clients like the Millspaugh's make my job a joy! We have created a lovely home over the years that continues to function well and look beautiful.

**★★★★★ — jacksock, March 2016**

> It was great working with Alan. He has great vision and is good at staying on budget.
> He listened to me and created a perfect place for me. I have referred him to many people and they all had wonderful results that fit each home in a personal way.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> Jack is my gold-medal-winning celebrity client and I am so blessed to have been able to share his home on Architectural Digest.com. He allowed me to create a timeless modern villa for him to enjoy coming home to on his short breaks from the tennis circuit.

**★★★★★ — kmalone95, March 2016**

> I have worked with Alan on Design projects for my home and office over the past 10 years. He is very professional and works with integrity. He is so much fun to work with, I enjoy him very much as a person beyond his design capabilities. He has great sense of style, and an ability to blend my own design ideas and personal quirkiness with his professional expertise. He gives honest feedback about my decorating ideas without being critical or superior. Alan usually gives me three or more choices at different price points, and If I am not happy with any of the choices, he will come back with more. He stretches my creativity, and encourages me to try things outside my comfort zone. He will get down to business and help with moving furniture and hanging pictures. He is super creative and up on the latest styles and trends.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> Nothing is more fun than working with a family over many years, seeing their kids grow up and sharing in the many changes that occur. Kathy and Pete have challenged me to really figure out what inspires them and we have embarked on many great art and design projects over the years.

**★★★★★ — lvogt47, Feb. 2016**

> Alan and his team are consummate professionals. They are incredibly creative and resourceful. Their attention to detail is impeccable. If you want to create space that is original, reflecting your personal style, consult with Alan Karlin Design.

**Comment from Alan Karlin Design:**

> We are ready to move on with Phase II of this project. Such a great project and fun to really create a family & entertaining home for cooks.

 - Location: Kansas City, MO

 - Description: We were called upon by our clients to convert a very Tuscan feeling penthouse to a sleek, more contemporary home while still incorporating some traditional items. The clients left the large home where they raised four children to this easy-to-leave condo to allow for travel and a new look. A custom sized hand-knotted rug makes the living room complete. The pops of color with dark red and purple really show with the lovely neutral palette. A mixture of marble and glass tile, that really look like…

 - Description: For this project, the client wanted a contemporary but functional home. We removed a strange wall with a fireplace in the middle of the two sitting rooms to create an open floor plan with two conversation areas and two TVs! The fireplace is painted to look like Venetian marble with a cool, contemporary firebox complete with the rock & fire insert. The custom bar is stunning with waterfall granite down the sides & customized bottle storage. The kitchen was remodeled with fresh white cabinets, an…

 - Description: Our only direction for this top-to-bottom remodel was to make it look like James Bond. With gray tones, pops of rich navy and stainless steel accents this sleek villa is filled with cool! We tore out walls, added windows, put in all new wood flooring, tile, cabinetry, lighting (check out the awesome living room light!) and a state-of-the-art man cave in the lower level.

 - Description: This beautiful home is occupied by a family of five that really live in and use their home. We show photos of the formal living room and family room. The large formal living room is used for conversation and entertaining. We have incorporated wonderful colors such as purple and orange with great neutrals and texture. The homeowner complimented the design by combining different mediums of artwork, some of which was made by the homeowner themselves!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Links at Lionsgate** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please share details of the "exotic granite" you used in this kitchen? It's gorgeous.

Thanks,
Cindy Smith

A: The name of the stone is - Sucuri. I hope that helps in your search for a counter top!
I checked and there are several images and information on line under that name.

What colour are the cabinets

A: We are currently in the process of updating my website. Hopefully the website will be up by the end of the week. I'd love to talk to you anytime. Feel free to call me at 913-384-3558 or email me at alan@alankarlindesign.com.

**Q: Granite counter** *(in Photo Questions)*

What's the color and name of the counters?

A: The name of the stone is - Sucuri. I hope that helps in your search for a counter top!

**Q: Ugly** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I have a vase that belonged to my grandmother who has passed. It has a nice shape but is pretty ugly. I want to use it on the left side of my tv to balance out the chair and art on the right side. I'm not sure what to do with it, spray paint? What color? My Livingroom is gray, plum and shades of gold. Any advice would be great! I'm also not sure if it's tall enough to offset the chair and art.

A: That looks like a Roseville piece of pottery. I'd say too valuable to paint.

**Q: Backsplash** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please give me more info on the backsplash, please?

A: Hello, this is a stainless steel tile that was purchased at Lowes about 18 months ago. I did a quick search and did not find it on their website in the current items.

**Q: Lovely flooring - what is it?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What type & Color Stain is the flooring? Thanks!

A: The floor is walnut wood 5" wide planks. It was finished on the job site with a Tudor Brown stain. The goal was to get a durable wood floor that did not have the wild grain of Oak wood floors.
