**Q: HELP please!! Needing Landscaping Ideas for Huge Yard w/ Hollow Pool** *(in Landscape Design)*

Need somewhat affordable backyard ideas for this fixer. Currently contains a hollow pool that owner does not wish to keep.  The back room you see is going to be a revamped sun room/ hang out area. Thank you so much!

A: Hi Karina, It looks like your garden area has lots of potential. I'd look through images of gardens online so that you start to get clarity about your own sense of style, what you like and dislike. Also, make a list of goals for the garden (eg : play space for the kids, grilling area, dining / entertaining area, herb/vegetable garden. or whatever makes sense for you).

Knowing what you want to be able to do in the garden, as well as what is beautiful to you, is a good start.

Then measure the garden and make a basic plan of its shape, and include the house and the placement of windows and doors (measure their location). See if you have an outdoor GFI electrical outlet, and a hose bib or faucet---if you use low voltage landscape lighting and an irrigation system, you will need these. (You will want the irrigation outlet to be continuous, that is, you won't want it on a switch because you don't want anyone to turn the irrigation off).

I can't tell what part of the country you are in? But from the photos, a few thoughts:
\- it looks like you may get a lot of sun, and so if you're in the right zone, a fragrant garden would do well: lavender, rosemary, butterfly bush, monarda. rose, perhaps lilac, plants like that. Or are you in California? I can't tell, but plants that make sense in your area; you can discuss with your local plants nursery.

You'll want to choose either an angular, geometric garden or organic, curvy shapes for the layout. 

From what I can see of the photos, one design I would try out would be : formal vegetable and herb and fruit garden in the sunny area near the house (if it gets full sun), with gravel walks. Also, flower beds. A terrace with shade of some kind (sail cloth, or umbrella, or pergola). Then I'd make a small woodland where there are tall fences, this may be along the side of the house where the pool is, it's hard to tell in the photos. There could be seating in a few areas: a bench in the herb garden or a chair & ottoman there (eg adirondack chair, nothing fancy); dining table or deeper seating with a dining-coffee table on the terrace, for say 6-10 people if that makes sense for your lifestyle; and then a bench or a couple of chairs in the "woods" area.

You could also incorporate a small oval or rectangle of grass for play space.

**Q: would you cut down this tree?** *(in Polls)*

I love trees and hate to get rid of one, but this tree blocks the front of my house, and does not allow grass to grow. 
The next door neighbor is upset with me, saying it takes away from his privacy and would change the look of the street. 
While I understand his concern, I would like to have a nice lawn and view of my home. 
Trimming it would help, but would still block the house and not allow the grass to grow to its fullest. The roots are also very close to the house.

A: The tree grounds the house; without it, the house could feel out of proportion with its surroundings, from what is shown in the photos. That said, have it limbed up and pruned so that it stops taking over. An arborist could open it up more and lighten it so that it is in proportion with the house.

**Q: Plain Jane Rancher Needs Some Lovin’** *(in Landscape Design)*

Two years ago we downsized to this 1964 ranch home. We’ve focused primarily on work inside and are now turning our attention to the front yard. As the photos show the current landscaping is very symmetrical and nondescript. We’d like to keep at least a few of the basic plantings along the house but add variety in height, color and texture.  Maybe add an ornamental tree or two further out in the yard... Since we have a lake cottage where we spend our summers we don’t want to put anything in that requires much attention from June-September. We’re in southern Ohio in zone 6. 
We would love to have your suggestions for improving the curb appeal of our home. The house isn’t ugly but it could certainly use a little pizzazz! Thanks much.

A: That's a great idea, to head to the local nursery and discuss plant selection with them—maybe take photos of the house with you to better explain.

**Q: Improve exterior and curb appeal of midcentury modern home** *(in Landscape Design)*

Looking for ideas for paint color, landscape design, new front door ideas on this new home we are buying to improve curb appeal. Looking for ways to balance the appearance since it has a wrap around deck on one side and uneven brick level. Definitely looking to paint the wood and deck on the house.  Would like a really inviting door and entryway. Also, would like to place some sort of landscaping in front of the jagged brick wall to the left of the house.

A: Congratulations on your new home! What a wonderful house and garden situation you have to work with. 

Make a path, with irregular/natural stone steps along the left side of the photo, behind the tree, so that that slope serves a purpose for you. Add some evergreens along the wall, some that have interesting bones, like a shaped pine, or an intriguing shape, like espaliered camellia. 

\[Note! As it is unknown which direction the house is facing, and in what part of the country, it's not possible to suggest plants— plant selection really depends very much on that, as well as how much sun/wind/shade/water a specific area of your garden receives\]

You could replace all or much of the lawn with an ornamental perennial with good texture, for example Carex pensylvanica, which looks a lot like grass but is much less maintenance and has a great texture. Other soft ornamental grasses and perennials would frame the stone walk to the front door, interspersed with evergreens for structure. 

On the right side, in planters on the balcony, you could add one type of ornamental grass, or a soft perennial (lavender with artemisia 'Silver Mound' and stachys or a dwarf white-flowering echinacea. 

If it is sunny and you like the idea of growing fruits, veggies and herbs, then you could dress the base of the porch/balcony with espalier fruit trees. An area of walkable lawn could be framed by native grasses and perennials for a natural, informal, relaxing feel, and you could tuck raised beds in the planting beds for growing basil, rosemary, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, sage, peppers--that kind of thing.

Adding well-placed and planted boulders to this garden would make sense with the terrain and the house.

**Q: Need landscape ideas for tiny house with side yard** *(in Landscape Design)*

hello! I am new to forums in general but was hoping for any and all suggestions to my only yard: a side yard. I have a tiny home (528sqft) with a large detached garage. Neighbors said original owners (1940s home) had a wire fence surrounding the property with lilac bushes in front of it. I no longer have a fence as a flipper (owner before me) thought the fence was useless (he didn't have dogs) and tore it down-which neighbors were confused about because once he did that he broke the grandfathered-in fence. Sorry for the run on sentence there. I went to the village to see if there was a possibility for a fence since its my only yard area and they would allow it but it would have to be not wire (aesthetically pleasing) and farther into the property away from the road which I don't want to give up all that space but I'd be open to suggestions for plants that may act as a barrier- I have an elderly neighbor who literally walks into people's yards for his dog to go to the bathroom. this is my first home (22 years old) and I just want suggestions to make it look pretty but also a little more private for me! Thank you for any and all suggestions! (also dumpster in yard was from getting new roof) lol

**Q: Ideas for a long hedge** *(in Landscape Design)*

This is regarding a property in the DFW area. We have a 50' + retaining wall (grey color)  along a red brick house. It gets morning sun and afternoon shade. I'm trying to decide between the following options. 
(1) single plant (hydrangeas)
(2) triple layer (ornamental grass like Karl Forester in the back, hydrangeas in the middle, another ornamental grass like blonde ambition in the front)
(3) repeat group plantings
(4) create multiple rooms, say 10' for ornamental grass followed by 10' of hydrangeas, followed by 10' of salvias, etc)

What do you recommend for maximum visual impact? Also, any plant recommendations are welcome, suitable for morning son and afternoon shade, minimum upkeep, perennial, and Texas proof.

A: How high is the retaining wall? If it is for example 6ft high, a boarder planting would be lovely if broken up by a seating area. For example, a border planting 3-5 feet deep against the wall, with an opening for a 5ft long bench set upon flag stones or gravel, with a lattice covered in vine, against the grey wall, behind it. For the planting palette itself, it helps to know the height of the wall and the dimensions of the the area in question. For example, the space is 50ft long x 20ft wide, and the retaining wall is 6ft high.
