I am under contract for a small house that used to be a neighborhood corner store, and trying to explore options to make it more "homey" in appearance. At some point, I'd like to add a pitched roof. My dad and brother-in-law have experience with building and installing trusses and roofing. The issue is... the house has an angled front (see aerial photo). Any ideas on how to add trusses to the home? Open to typical A-shaped trusses, or an irregular, modern-looking right triangle truss with the acute angle overhanging the lawn. Thoughts? Also open to any other ideas about how to "domesticate" the exterior! A: It's better to focus on the transition from the street to front to the yard to the front of the house ...it will do more to make the house feel like a home than anything you could do to change the roofline. What's really important is the sense of arrival. You can add a nice fence, landscaping - plant a nice big tree in front. Celebrate the architecture you already have. It will not only be very satisfying but also better for your wallet. **Q: Updating a 1960’s ranch, door color, finishing touches** *(in Paint)* I just painted the brick and, gutters and trim. They still have to finish Painting the right side but it gives you a general idea. They are refinishing the wrought iron. I need to finish the landscaping. And I am switching out the mailbox and lightfixture. The storm door is going to be removed as well, and the front door painted. Should I paint the front door black or a bold color? Shutters? Any additional advice on finishing touches would be appreciate. TIA A: Go with a bold color. It's already recessed and the black would make it disappear further. The front door should be welcoming. Blue would be my first pick. Other options are red or green. Here's a renovation on a ranch house we did with a bold front door color! **Q: Old House... New Color? Painted Brick?** *(in Paint)* We just bought a new old house, and the outside definitely needs something... a refresh... I've gone through all the discussions on here and still can't quite figure out what we should do. My wife feels that we should paint the house all one color (brick and siding). She likes all grey with white trim. I'm still on the fence on wether to paint the brick, but i will say that at least 5 houses on the block have their bricks painted over, so our home wouldn't be out of place if we went that route. So should we paint the brick? The bushes are definitely overgrown, my wife wants to just trim them down to half the size, but everything i read says that these bushes, Arborvitae, can't just be trimmed down that low. So should we just remove them and replant something else in their place? The garage door is being replaced, any suggestions on what color we should paint it?
