**Q: Remodeling off-center fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Everything is wrong with this fireplace layout. It's off center and is located by a traffic corner.  The fireplace opening is only 11" away from the corner wall which really limits the type of surround I can get. The top TV hole needs to be closed and drywalled over to accommodate the large wall mounted TV.  I'm envisioning the bottom cabinet hole made smaller and turned into an open firewood box.

If I take stacked stone or tile all the way to the ceiling (or even 1/2 way up to a mantle), I'd frame a bump out so the stone doesn't sit flat against the wall and look shallow and cheap as you come around the corner.

Here's the "Before"


I've looked into 1) a concrete molded surround, 2) large tiles or 3) rugged stacked stone.  The house is Mediterranean SoCal tract home. The walls are white and I have to work with the yellowish "travertine" porcelain flooring already in place. I'm including a few mockups of ideas I've created.

Here's the large tiles




Stack stone (actual stone color would match the floor). Rustic barn beam mantle or white/wood stained constructed mantle?




Here's a type of concrete surround that would work. It would extend the wall across both the firewood and the fireplace boxes. Drywall on top.

I'm stuck in indecision -- help! If you have any other ideas I'd love to hear them!

A: Thanks for the extra photo.  I like what you have.  I can see where you are going with it.  I think you've made some good choices.  I still vote go with the tile all the way up.  Be sure to include a nice mantle.  Be sure to pick tiles and stain that coordinates with your floor to help tie everything together.

**Q: long skinny art-where to hang?** *(in Home Decorating)*

I usually gravitate to art that tends to be a rectangle that are closer measurements in height and length.
However I have the below art that just tends to sit there and never be hung because I don't know where they should go. Any tips on hanging long skinny horizontal pieces?  They just look so unbalanced on a wall to me.
First painting I have the most trouble with (it's approx 8inx3ft)
2nd is large, probably about 24"x 58"
Last one is small, 8"x16"

A: I like the idea mentioned above of grouping them together.  That small one looks like it might look nice over the towel holder in  your bathroom as well.  I think it would even work over your fire place.  Just group with some taller items on the sides.

**Q: Is it okay to do a different tile in master bathroom?** *(in Remodeling)*

I am doing white marble-look porcelain tile with wood-look tile throughout the house. The white tile is large format (47"x102") and the wood tile is 36"x8".

White tile will be in living room and kitchen on the floor. The wood tile will start at the hallway and go into the bedrooms.

I was planning on using the white marble-look tile in the master bath on the floors and walls and have some accent walls using the wood tile.

However, I'm also thinking of doing completely different tiles in the master bath...not sure if this is a design no-no. My thought was that since everywhere will be the same (white and wood), if I were to change the tiles it could feel like you're "transported" to a different place (spa) when in the bathroom.

Main goal is that the master bath will feel like a spa.

So, I'm stuck with a couple questions:

If I keep the master bath with white and wood, do you think it will be too redundant?
Would it be weird to have completely different tiles in the master bath?

A: I like your choices.  I agree - I like the look of the top one as well.  You could also pick out some hex or different shape tiles to add interest or even play with how you lay the tiles.  Maybe a herringbone pattern in the shower or for the floor would add interest.  I pulled some images that might inspire you.  Hope that helps.
