> I truly enjoyed working with Shirley! She was warm and friendly, and she listened to me. Our first visit was at my house, where she took photos and an assessment of the property. We spent about about an hour and a half or so discussing ideas, walking the property, and just making some preliminary choices. Next, we met at her office where she handed me a folder which contained photos of my property with color coded circles as markers for possible plants. I loved that and refer to it often. Also, was a list of plants that were categorized into groups depending on their use and placement in the design. I had asked for referrals, and she had a few of those as well. After the office visit, we went to the nursery. There, we walked and talked, and I was able to see the plants she had recommended and choose others that I liked as well, taking notes in my folder. My project is still in the works. I have been working one step at a time as my budget allows. I use my folder and depend on it as a support tool! Shirley's consultation was thorough and has been essential to me.

> Shirley helped me transform my hillside into an oasis. She really inspired me and got me started on a very large project that turned out better than I imagined. My hillside yard is the envy of Laurel Canyon!
>
> I am very hands on so she collaborated with me with out a hitch. She has a great eye and knows her plants. She is also fun and light we had a great time. I recommended her to my sister and she was very happy as well. I would continue to recommend her.

**★★★★ — Paula Ely, Oct. 2012**

> Shirley designed a beautiful drought-tolerant garden for us to replace our front lawn, and brought in an excellent contractor to execute her plan. Only negative was her frequent lateness for appointments, but we are extremely pleased with our final product and her respect for our budget. Our garden is now the talk of the neighborhood!!

**Comment from Shirley Bovshow:**

> Thanks for your honesty Paula. I have worked on becoming more punctual and can say that comments like this hold me to a greater accountability!
>
> It was a pleasure designing your yard and am thrilled that we were able to transform your yard from a non-descript water dependent lawn into a low water showplace!
>
> Stayed within the budget too.

 - Description: This backyard was your typical boring tract lot. It was rectangular and flat with a dying lawn and plants that hugged the perimeter fence like wall flowers with no charm at all. I transformed it into a multi- level yard with various hidden destinations so that the yard is not revealed completely at first glance! Low water plants and lot's of openings within the garden to reveal a large sky. Designed by Shirley Bovshow. Landscape construction: Southern California Landscape.

 - Description: I designed a unique cutting garden and potting area for a plant lover who made weekly trips to the farmers market for flowers. The custom plant cutting table folds down when not in use and has holes for the metal flower buckets. Painted yellow to match the repurposed, antique dresser now used as a potting table. Marine varnish protects the two pieces from water. More information on http://edenmakersblog.com/?p=262

## Community Q&A

**Q: Pink muhly grass on a slope?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can pink muhly grass grow on a slope?

A: Yes, you can plant muhly grass on a slope.

**Q: Stones** *(in Photo Questions)*

How much do these stones weight?

A: The flagstones are very heavy.. 3"inches thick and about 3 feet by 3 feet.

**Q: Also, is the ground cover you have the plants planted in mulch?** *(in Photo Questions)*

I love this. Can you tell me the name of the rocks you used to line the edge and any of the plants you used in this landscape. Also , is the ground cover you have the plants in mulch?

A: THank you.
Salvia gregii, seneccio, arctoctis, nemesia, blueberries, artichoke. Finely shredded redwood mulch.

**Q: Is that a retaining wall system or are they natural stone?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is recycled concrete from an old patio. Acid stained to look like stone.

**Q: Energy efficient grow lighting** *(in Growing under Lights)*

We are probably going to buying a nice heavy duty heated propagation mat (ex - 12" x 10') (redi-heat from Farmtek), along with the recommended thermostat, for new seedlings and indoor vegetable gardening. ~$320. Would you suggest something else?
Similarly, when it comes to the lighting, I'm thinking about something like the linked. DH wonders if we can't buy a more basic fixture, and the lamps we want. (Linking to the same website).
What would you use, to light a 12" x 10" line of plants? https://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;ft\_lights\_fixtures-ft\_greenhouse\_lighting;pg111521.html

A: Hi Oldbat2be!
I wrote a blog post about the best kind of lights to use to start seeds.
I don't think you need to spend $320 to get started if you have a basic light setup for seedlings as well as a heat mat.

Take a look at the article and let me know if you have any questions.

**Q: Let's get to know each other March 1, 2015** *(in The Kitchen Table)*

Its been a really long time since we did this and I think since we have so many new people we need to know something about each other. I'll begin and everyone else can follow. If you have a photo to add that would be great! You can see all our photos here: Our Photos

I started the KT Gathering place back in 2010, you can see it from the photo link above. Lots of pages & information to look at. Its all about us KTer's.
I usually begin these "Swaps" we have been having.
If you want to get to know everyone here tell us a bit about yourself or just ask.
Come on now your next!
