Kelly Berg is a California-based interior designer specializing in color, vegan design and authentic spaces. Her business, Story & Space, was born of a desire to help clients create spaces that truly feel like home. With a background in set decorating and photo styling, and specialized training in color psychology, Kelly approaches each project as a work of art and an exercise in storytelling. Her work is grounded in the philosophy that the most successful spaces are those that are mindfully and compassionately designed. She is dedicated to using cruelty-free materials and is mildly obsessed with vintage finds. Ultimately, she believes in moving through this world with more kindness and empathy, and creating interiors that feel good and are good for all of us.

Kelly earned her BA in Communication from the University of California, San Diego and her BFA in Interior Design from the Design Institute of San Diego. She formally studied applied color psychology and human response to color through the International Association of Color Consultants (IACC-NA). With 20 years of design experience, Kelly has been featured in and has written for online and print publications including Better Homes and Gardens, Martha Stewart and Marin Home Magazine. As a homeowner in Marin, Kelly is continuously putting her design skills to work by fixing up her own 1950s house. She enjoys hiking with her two rescue pups, playing the ukulele (or trying, anyway) writing poetry, gardening and cooking delicious vegan food. Kelly also frequently visits her home town of Napa for a little wine and inspiration.

> Working with Kelly is an outstanding experience. She is supremely talented and a joy to be around -- the perfect combination. She has helped me over the years with a variety of design projects across two of our homes. I have really enjoyed working with Kelly and, importantly, love living in the finished product she created.

> Prior to working with Kelly, I had no experience with interior designers. Originally I was hesitant to seek out such a service — I wanted my home to finally reflect my character and interests, and I worried that a designer might urge me to adopt a style that didn’t reflect me. I wondered if the whole process would be a struggle. From our first meeting Kelly put me at ease and my worries to rest. She asked questions to not only get to know what resonates with me, but also to refine that style in a way that has resulted in spaces throughout my home that are more a reflection of myself than I ever could have imagined. The spaces we have completed are not only satisfying to me but they bring me joy. Her instincts and skillful knowledge of color are phenomenal and she is crazy-good at furniture and art placement. Kelly is open to creative collaboration – that is, she welcomes any idea you may want to consider for your space, she provides a straightforward opinion, and she draws on all her skills to not only make something work, but to make it shine. To put it simply, she is able to envision beautiful spaces that directly reflect her client’s not-quite-formed dreams. Kelly’s professionalism and imaginative style are exceeded only by her honesty and kind heart – an important quality for someone who is doing a job that ultimately is a very personal endeavor.

> I am so happy that I found Kelly Berg to help me choose paint colors for my new home. I have a good sense of what I like and am somewhat picky. In the past I have found it hard to work with color consultants because they would simply follow my lead and not add much value, making me feel that I had wasted my money. Not so with Kelly – her expertise and confidence really shined through. She listened well to what I wanted but was not timid about giving a different opinion – for example she gave me great advice on how to choose wall and floor colors that would not clash with the colors of the existing kitchen cabinets and granite, which I was not ready to replace. She gave me well-considered parameters within which to be creative and build a palette. We discussed each area of the house and she gave me different options that would go well with the main neutral we chose. After an initial two-hour consultation at the house, as I was trying out samples, I paid for a bit of additional time to work together over email. Kelly is very efficient and I felt that it was money very well spent. Kelly introduced me to full spectrum colors that shift beautifully with the light. She was able to translate the language and feelings I was using to talk about colors into paint colors and brands that would actually look right on the wall. I love how it turned out and am excited to move into my new house. Thank you, Kelly, for helping me “tell my story.” :-)

> What a wonderful review! Thank you. It was my pleasure. :)

> Kelly is very friendly and has a good eye for color and texture. She introduced materials we didn't know about before. She gave ideas about layout and furnishings we'd never have come up with on our own which work great in our home!

> The walls of my newly home were off white and I wanted to add some feeling - however. when it comes to color, I'm tone deaf. I know what I like only after I see it. After trying several interior designers, to no avail, I asked Kelly for some help. The previous designers gave me their ideas of what they thought would work - Kelly worked with me to find out what I wanted. She was amazing. Her process helped to clarify what I was looking for, narrow down choices and then finalize the selection. Kelly engages to gain enough information to begin the color realm selection, then works with you to further narrow choices. She is so adept at explaining the subtle distinctions among shades, and why some will work and some won't. I really appreciate her collaborative approach, helping me understand the impact of choices and options. Bottom line - the results are outstanding - the colors created exactly what I was looking. The pictures may not do justice to her work, but the colors in the living and dining rooms and hallway, flow with each other, are vibrant, very comfortable and relaxing and have a 'wow' factor. All that I wanted. I've recently engaged her again for help with kitchen (tile and color), bedroom and bathroom. All results are better than I could have hoped for. I will continue to seek her guidance and just wish there were more stars to give. I highly, highly recommend her.

> Kelly's color expertise helped us achieve a calm, soothing home while using lots of color. Kelly did what I could never do on my own - identify a palette that changes color from room to room and yet flows together. She helped me interpret what I like and don't like and provided several choices for each room. After the initial visit, she was easy to work with via email. I won't paint without her again!

> Kelly has helped us with three design projects, starting with a knockout kitchen/family room remodel several years ago, then the complete furnishings for a vacation home, and just recently, the paint/color selection and furniture guidance for a new condo. In all three cases, Kelly steered us on the right path while respecting our personal style. Her sense of color is exceptional, and she is timely and efficient with the use of her time. In each case we set a projected number of hours based on the level of services I felt I needed, and Kelly gave us great value. We had never used a design specialist before, and now I know how helpful it is. The final results reflect a professional touch, and we saved money in the end by getting it right the first time around.

> I did a complete remodel of a contemporary 2400 sf home built in 1972. This included two new bathrooms with showers, new kitchen, opening up main living space by removing walls, new lighting for the kitchen / DR / LR, resurfacing a brick fireplace, replacing a wet bar and storage, new flooring, new paint colors for the interior and exterior, and acquiring new furniture and rugs. Kelly worked with me throughout this entire process to either recommend or confirm selections. Her ideas -- colors, materials, style, details -- have made all the difference in completing this project successfully. The first questions friends ask is "Who did you work with? We love how it all ties together." And, best of all, Kelly is delightful to work with and an easy collaborator with all the resources involved. I recommend Kelly highly for any type of project -- large or small.

> Kelly Berg consulted on design, materials and how to get started with my first floor remodel. She listened to what I was considering, respected what I liked .. or not. She was pleasant, flexible, and generous with her ideas. She had and shared her opinion in a way that moved me forward with understanding of why she made particular recommendations.
>
> Kelly facilitated rethinking the things that were not compatible and how to set somethings aside in order to move forward. She kept her commitments, provided alternatives and was reliable in the relationship assisting with our design project.

**★★★★★ — Damian Bailey, July 2013**

> We hired Kelly to help us make major color and design decisions for our home while in Escrow. Kelly was great at encouraging us to discover our own vision while giving advice on making stylish and sound major decisions. She helped us pick out a compelling flooring selection and a color palette that fits the intent and use of each room. We will definitely hire Kelly again the next time we need to make design decisions.

**★★★★★ — Mandy F, June 2012**

> Kelly worked with us styling several photo shoots for Reba McEntire's clothing line. She was super easy to work with, always went above and beyond so that we had choices galore and kept a positive attitude while working really, really hard. All this and on a budget, too.
>
> Our style was "easy breezy" which meant contemporary, eclectic neutrals with juicy splashes of color. She nailed it. Couldn't be happier with Kelly Berg.

**Comment from Story & Space Interior Design:**

> Mandy - You are amazing! Thanks for the lovely review. It was a blast working with you and Ron on the Reba shoots. Thanks for being a great client.

**★★★★★ — Rachel Perls, May 2012**

> I am a fellow color consultant colleague of Kelly's. With her interior design and staging background, she proved instrumental in providing me with staging assistance to prepare a client's house for a portfolio shoot. I have now used her services twice. She has a clear vision of what needs to happen, is well-organized, and always exceeds my expectations. She turns a ho-hum ordinary residential space into a polished, cohesive, well-designed space with just the minimum of props. Kelly is a real pro and a delight to work with.

**Comment from Story & Space Interior Design:**

> Thank you, Rachel. It was a pleasure working with you!
