A modest retainer is required at this stage. The openness of the space really makes me feel like I'm living in a different apartment. I've been through this before in another apartment, and I know that the right contractor can keep a kitchen renovation that should take 3-4 weeks from dragging on for a couple of months. They finished on time and cleaned up as they went, which was important since I stayed in the apartment throughout the renovation. They were also great at dealing with the inevitable hiccups you encounter along the way on jobs like this. After all, you never know what you are going to find when you open up the walls in very old buildings. In my case, the arrangement of the water pipes was somewhat unusual. Berceli adjusted the design as needed but never pushed me into making a decision that made me uncomfortable. The owner of the company visited the job site regularly, and the guys on the crew really cared about their work. The kitchen was unchanged since the building was completed in 1986. The layout was poor, making it almost impossible for two persons to work in there at the same time. We had thought about how we wanted to change it and had a specific re-modeling in mind. Berceli’s designer created the final design after discussing various ideas for improving the initial design we had come up with. We ordered our cabinets from Berceli (Miralis, custom made in Canada) and Berceli set up an appointment with a tile shop in Manhattan to help us select our floor tiles and backsplash tiles. (We bought our appliances from Gringer & Sons, who coordinated delivery with Berceli.) > > The work took six weeks, as planned. The Berceli team that did the work was excellent. They took great care in protecting our living room and dining room floors and containing dust within the “tent” enclosing the work area. They cleaned up thoroughly before leaving each evening. They adhered to all the condominium’s regulations and remained on good terms with the building staff throughout the job. They consulted me whenever necessary during the work (I was working from home part of the time), proposing options for running new electric lines (I opted for a route that involved making three small holes in a bedroom wall), and proposing plumbing options (I opted for sealing off the original water line to the refrigerator and running a new one from under the sink, so I could have an easier-to-access shut-off valve there). > > The team was particularly impressive when it came to cosmetic details. For example, when doing the backsplash they spent several hours planning the tile layout and discussing it with me before starting work. Most impressive of all, they found a way of mounting the Miele retractable range hood that we had chosen so that, when retracted, it was exactly flush with the front of the adjacent wall cabinets (something not provided for in Miele’s installation kit and something we had not seen in any showroom). > > We are delighted with our new kitchen and dining-area cabinet unit. We are in a NYC Classic 6 with a good-sized galley kitchen. We are that NYC rarity, in that we cook almost every night. We were perfectly content with the kitchen footprint, but it sadly needed an upgrade. The estimate we got from the project manager, Samir, was not cheap, but totally accurate. There were no surprises. The designer somehow managed to not only create a beautiful kitchen, but somehow got us a lot more storage in the same space...I still can't figure out how. Cindi helped us with the fine details as colors and backsplash, which added to the overall look. > > Were there glitches along the way? Of course there were, as you don't tear out a complete kitchen without having some problems.
